00:00Today we're going to fix a Quest 3 controller that doesn't seem to get any power indication and won't pair to a headset.
00:13Welcome back to FixMyOculus. Today we're going to fix this Quest 3 controller.
00:17It just doesn't power on. A customer sent this in because they were having issues with it.
00:22One thing that wasn't disclosed that I kind of found out as soon as we opened up the device was that this is a bit of a self-repair gone wrong.
00:30If we open up the controller here, we can see that there's tiny little marks here where the customer tried to get into the device
00:37and they were just, you know, clearly shimming things in here over and over again.
00:42And to the best that I could determine, in one of these attempts to get the faceplate off the controller,
00:46they actually damaged this ribbon here, which is kind of the main tracking LED for the device here.
00:51And if this connection point is ruined down here, then the whole thing doesn't get power
00:56and obviously the power light indicator isn't going to turn on.
00:59So this board actually may be getting power. We'll know once we swap this LED array out.
01:04So what we're going to do is we're going to swap this LED array out and we're going to see if the controller just works when we do that.
01:10You will need a screwdriver with a T5 bit and a pry tool always comes in handy.
01:15And then I always use tweezers for most of the repairs that I do here.
01:19If your LED array is damaged like this one is, you may need a new part as well.
01:25So before you get started on this repair, don't forget to purchase a part.
01:28If you need one, you can get a part like this on our website, FixMyOculus.com.
01:32So the first thing that I'm going to do is take the screws out of the faceplate here.
01:41I've removed these three short screws and then there's one long screw that kind of sits between these buttons on the joystick here.
01:47I'm going to go ahead and leave this screw here.
01:49This kind of connects the LED array, the faceplate up here down to the battery compartment.
01:54And that just kind of helps keep the controller intact while we're taking it apart.
01:57Next, we're going to take out the screws in the battery compartment.
02:00And in order to do that, I have to take this sticker off.
02:03Most of the time what you can do is you can just grab a corner here.
02:05And then these stickers are a little bit more rigid than the ones on the Quest 2s.
02:09So this whole thing should just come up in one piece.
02:12Then we've got one, two, three, four screws in the battery compartment that need to come out.
02:20Now that we've gotten all of our screws removed except for this one here, we can go ahead and take this controller apart.
02:25It's a little trickier than it is on the Quest 2.
02:27And maybe it's just because I'm so used to the Quest 2 controllers and I've taken apart so many of them.
02:32But this one, we actually kind of have to pop this outer shell away from the faceplate here just to create some room.
02:39And then this inside grip assembly will come loose here.
02:43See that little eyelet there?
02:45That needs to be separated so that that will come out.
02:48These two pieces need to be separated so that that will come out easily.
02:52And then we should just be able to kind of peel this away.
02:54Another thing that we have to be careful of is that this cable, which is your haptic feedback motor cable,
02:59and then this cable, which is your Bluetooth antenna cable, are both connected from this portion of the controller.
03:07So we need to disconnect those in order to continue the teardown.
03:10And now that those two cables are disconnected, we can go ahead and remove this outer shell that has the grip button on it.
03:22Just like that.
03:26One thing that messes a lot of people up on these repairs is this battery ribbon latch here.
03:31So we're going to get our pry tool in here and just flip that latch up.
03:35And now we can safely remove that battery cable.
03:38And now at this point, we can remove that last screw.
03:47We've removed that screw, and that battery ribbon cable is unseated, so we can just pull these two pieces apart.
03:55Next we need to take this trigger off, and it's really just held in place by this little metal rod here.
04:00We can push down on this side here, and then use our tweezers to grab onto it.
04:04And then once the rod's out, the trigger just kind of comes off.
04:07Nothing crazy.
04:08Now we'll go ahead and remove the joystick ribbon cable here.
04:19And then we'll take this ribbon cable that goes to the sensor array, and we'll unplug that.
04:26And there's two screws that hold this motherboard down.
04:30And then this motherboard just comes up.
04:32Easy peasy.
04:33I have my new sensor array with the frame here.
04:36We're just going to set it down like that and transfer these buttons.
04:39And then we'll unscrew the joystick and place that back into the new frame.
04:44When we're putting this joystick back in, we want to make sure that the ribbon side is facing out and away from the center.
04:52And we want to make sure that the capacitance touch point here is facing toward the center.
04:57Because that part of the joystick that detects capacitance needs to be able to touch that point on the board.
05:03And then we're just going to put this board back here.
05:05Make sure that's seated flush.
05:07And then we'll go ahead and put our screws back in.
05:11And this is why I think that tweezers are an absolute necessity for this job.
05:15Because I'll need them to put that cable back into the ribbon latch.
05:19Can you do it without tweezers? Yeah, probably.
05:22Is it a lot less fun? Definitely.
05:24And we'll put this joystick ribbon back in as well.
05:27Close that latch. Be very careful with those latches.
05:30They don't go back on easily.
05:32And we'll go in reverse order here.
05:34And we'll put this trigger back on.
05:36Really it's just a matter of making sure that things are lined up and making sure that that trigger spring there is seated on that contact point on the board.
05:44And then taking our rod, just kind of gently pushing down so that everything is held together.
05:50Seems good to me.
05:51Putting the battery compartment back on here.
05:53It's just a matter of lining up this little tooth here on the battery compartment with this little groove here on the faceplate.
05:59That just seats just like that.
06:01And then we'll go ahead and put our little retainer screw back in position.
06:06And we'll go ahead and reseat that battery cable.
06:09And gently close this latch.
06:12And now we should be able to throw a battery in there and see if it gets power now.
06:17Look at that.
06:19That's a good sign.
06:21Go ahead and take this part of the frame and the grip and we will slide that over the trigger.
06:29Lining everything up here.
06:39And then we can plug in our two cables.
06:42This is our haptic feedback motor here.
06:45And then our antenna.
06:47So that we can connect it to a headset.
06:49Alrighty.
06:50So we can finish putting this together now.
06:52Really just need to put this inside grip portion on.
06:55I kind of like to start at the bottom.
06:57Because again, remember we've got that eyelet there at the top that needs to sit between these two components.
07:03So I'll push that up.
07:07And if we did it right, then everything should just line up.
07:10If we did it right, then everything should just kind of click together.
07:13Cool.
07:14And now that we've got it back together, we can just go ahead and start putting screws back in.
07:17All these screws are the same by the way, except for the long one.
07:20We just have the single long screw that goes between the menu and the X button and the joystick.
07:27And then be careful not to put screws here or here.
07:30We only have these three screw holes here.
07:33Sometimes it's hard to determine where the screws are supposed to go.
07:37But you definitely don't want to waste your time putting screws in the peg holes for the faceplate.
07:45And then we'll just line this faceplate back up with the buttons and press down firmly.
07:49Check for power one more time.
07:51Alrighty.
07:52And that controller is good to go.
