00:00It's very much looking like the world is going to quickly pass the 2.8 degree Fahrenheit
00:04Paris Climate Agreement threshold, and possibly then some.
00:08That will mean our planet will see climate catastrophes the likes humanity has never
00:11dealt with, including droughts, flooding, and record-setting storms, wildfires, and
00:16heat waves.
00:17Now, climate experts writing for The Conversation say, countries that are caught in the crosshairs
00:21of the first wave of those climate events might decide to take drastic measures unilaterally,
00:26and that could have far-reaching effects.
00:29This infographic from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows just
00:33a few of those methods, from space-based sun reflection to increasing the amount of stratospheric
00:38aerosol.
00:39These geoengineering, or solar climate intervention methods, are theoretically effective.
00:44Some mirror the same cooling effects volcanoes have when they erupt, by spewing massive amounts
00:48of reflective particles into the atmosphere.
00:51The problem with any one nation using pretty much any of these methods, however, is that
00:54they could lead to issues for their neighbors, and that's sort of the underlying problem.
00:58If one country changes the weather within their borders, it could have cascading effects
01:02for their neighbors and beyond, possibly affecting their rainfall or causing inclement weather
01:07events.
01:08And even if it doesn't, and those weather events would have happened anyways, they could
01:11still be blamed, leading to possible military conflicts, literally, over the weather.
