04:00Step into the ring with this isekai'd warlord and it'll be the last thing you do.

04:2114-year-olds aren't supposed to be this complex, but that's what makes Lain so compelling.

06:17He's got a devil in his chest that gives him chainsaw limbs.

07:21He can kick ass and take names, all before the first period bell.

07:50is concerned.
08:05Number 75, Aqua Hoshino, Oshinoko.
08:09And during reincarnation, his mother's murder, and the dark side of the idol industry, it's
08:14never a dull day with Aqua.
08:26Number 74, Gai Shishio, The King of Braves Gao Gai Ga.
08:31Only a true mecha pilot could pull off that golden armor.
08:45Number 73, Mikoto Misaka, A Certain Magical Index.
08:50With her power, Mikoto is the last esper you want to tick off, unless you like her fiery
08:55side, that is.
09:11Number 72, Akira Fudo, Devilman.
09:14Even though he houses the embodiment of evil inside him, following Akira sure is a good
09:20time.
09:33Number 71, Kaguya Shinomiya, Kaguya-sama, Love is War.
09:39If it were any other romance lead, the will-they-won't-they would get tiresome, but Kaguya, we'd happily
09:45sit through 12 more seasons.
09:52Number 70, Yato, Noragami.
09:55Is there anything more charming than a wayward destruction god trying to live out a nice
10:00pacifist life?
10:18Number 69, Koro-sensei, Assassination Classroom.
10:23He's the only tentacled alien who could make training an army of pre-teen killers
10:28so heartwarming.
10:43Number 68, Joe Yabuki, Ashida no Joe.
10:48Considering Joe inspired a whole new generation of boxers, it's safe to say he's a heavyweight
10:53in anime history.
11:07Number 67, Hachiman Hikigaya.
11:10My youth romantic comedy is wrong, as I expected.
11:14Is he close-minded?
11:15Yes.
11:16Is he also one of the most realistic portrayals of a jaded teenage boy?
11:20Also yes.
11:33Number 66, Satsuki Kiryuin, Kill la Kill.
11:36There's a lot of great student council presidents in anime, and Satsuki is at the very top of
11:42the list.
11:55Number 65, Rimuru Tempest.
11:58That time I got reincarnated as a slime.
12:01As a slime that can transform into pretty much anything, Rimuru chose to become a lovable,
12:07modern-day fan favorite.
12:18Number 64, Reina, Higurashi When They Cry franchise.
12:23She may appear innocent to a fault, but boy, could she wield a machete.
12:33Number 63, Rudeus Greyrat, Mishoku Tensei, Jobless Reincarnation.
12:38He took getting isekai'd like a champ, and later turned into a surprisingly mature hero.
12:56Number 62, Rem, ReZero, Starting Life in Another World.
13:00Say it with us everyone, best girl.
13:11Number 61, Asta, Black Clover.
13:15Wizard or not, Asta delivered enough throat-shredding screams to earn his place among the greats.
13:26Number 60, Izaya, Durarara.
13:38Psychopaths sure have a way of making things interesting.
13:54Number 59, Hinata, Haikyuu.
13:57This guy is already the little giant in every way that counts.
14:14Number 58, Inuyasha, Inuyasha.
14:17Half demon, half human, and all parts iconic.
14:29Number 57, Ippo Makunouchi, Hajime no Ippo.
14:33In or out of the ring, no one can stand toe-to-toe with Ippo.
14:47Number 56, Yusuke Urameshi, Yu Yu Hakusho.
14:51The spirit detective is simply one of shounen's finest protagonists.
15:09Number 55, Natsu Dragneel, Fairy Tail.
15:12Natsu lives by a very simple motto, keep calm and fire dragons raw.
15:28Number 54, Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell.
15:33Smart, cunning, and enigmatic, Major Kusanagi is a cyborg with some of anime's best fight
15:40scenes under her belt.
15:57Number 53, Anya Forger, Spy Family.
16:01Not even trained assassins can resist the cuteness overload that is Anya Forger.
16:18Number 52, Lupin the Third, Lupin the Third Franchise.
16:23She is the world's number one thief, and the number one in our hearts too.
16:32Number 51, Yushiro Hanma, Baki the Grappler.
16:36the strongest man alive struggled in the parenting department.
16:55Number 50, Shinnosuke Nohara, Crayon Shin-Chan.
16:59At just five years old, Shin's mischievous schemes have catapulted him to Japanese stardom.
17:17Number 49, Megumin, Kanosuba, God's Blessing on this Wonderful World.
17:22This sorcerer's best spell is her ability to keep you laughing no matter what.
17:37Number 48, Deku, My Hero Academia.
17:40Never forget, Deku is the name of a hero.
17:50Number 47, Johann Liebert, Monster.
17:54He's the reason this anime is called Monster.
18:13Number 46, Alucard, Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate.
18:17As far as we're concerned, you can stop putting vampires in anime.
18:21None of them will ever match Alucard.
18:34Number 45, Kuso Saiki, The Disastrous Life of Saiki Kei.
18:39For a guy who's such a magnet for trouble, Saiki sure knows how to use his powers to
18:43great comedic effect.
18:57Number 44, Phoenix Ikki, Saint Seiya.
19:01The Bronze Saint of the Phoenix might have one of fiction's greatest redemption arcs.
19:13Number 43, Vashj, The Stampede, Trigun.
19:17A feared outlaw gunman who's actually a pacifist.
19:21Yeah, Vashj is special, alright.
19:34Number 42, Osamu Dazai, Bungo Stray Dogs.
19:38Pretty soon, people will know the name Dazai from Bungo instead of the author he's based
19:44on.
19:47Number 41, Ken Kaneki.
19:50Is there any other anime character that endured so much and still kept fighting?
20:11Number 40, Tanjiro, Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba.
20:15Sporting a heart of gold and a sword of steel, Tanjiro knows when a demon needs a helping
20:20hand and also when their head just needs to come clean off.
20:36Number 39, Kirito, Sword Art Online.
20:40Whether he's inside the game or not, Kirito is high up on our leaderboards.
21:00Number 38, Kiniku Suguru, Kinikuman.
21:03In this show, you're split between wanting to give him a hug and watching in awe as he
21:08decimates the competition.
21:19Number 37, Eikichi Onizuka, Great Teacher Onizuka.
21:24This is in session for warm, cozy father figures, who are also complete badasses.
21:41Number 36, Homura, Madoka Magica.
21:45Homura is the rare character that's just as mysteriously fascinating after you learn
21:50her backstory as she was before.
22:06Number 35, Himura Kenshin, Rurouni Kenshin.
22:10A badass with a soft side and a killer katana, Kenshin really is the best of every world.
22:19Number 34, Yugi Moto, Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters.
22:33No trap card needed, Yugi's already a household name.
22:55Number 33, Arataka Reigen, Mob Psycho 100.
23:00Reigen's the best con artist around.
23:02He even tricked us into caring about him.
23:15Number 32, Reinhardt, Legend of the Galactic Heroes franchise.
23:19Whether you know him as the Golden Bratz or the Golden Lion, the common denominator is
23:25Reinhardt's the gold standard.
23:38Number 31, Kenshiro, Fist of the North Star.
23:42He'd say more, but you're already dead.
24:01Number 30, Haruhi Suzumiya, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
24:06She may not realize she's an all-powerful god yet, but clearly, she's already worked
24:11her magic on anime history.
24:23Number 29, Koyomi Araragi, Monogatari franchise.
24:28Surviving all of this series' bloody conflicts relatively unscathed is pretty impressive,
24:33doubly so since Araragi usually gets the gold too.
24:47Number 28, Free Ran, Free Ran Beyond Journey's End.
24:51Grab your tissues everyone, just the thought of Free Ran gets us all misty eyed.
25:07Number 27, Howl, Howl's Moving Castle.
25:11Is Miyazaki capable of creating characters who aren't iconic?
25:23Number 26, Kaiji Ito, Kaiji.
25:26When in doubt, bet it all on Kaiji.
25:40Number 25, Saber, Fate Stay Night franchise.
25:44The finest king of England, Saber is honorable, mature, and she can wield a sword like nobody's
25:50business.
25:57Number 24, Saitama, One Punch Man.
26:00He's just a guy who's a hero for fun.
26:03Defeating anyone with a single punch is the gut-busting gag on top.
26:16Number 23, Usagi, Sailor Moon.
26:20For decade-spanning franchises, anything to go by, Moon Prison Power is here to stay.
26:36Number 22, Torfinn, Vinland Saga.
26:39He just has one of the greatest character arcs in anime history.
26:50Number 21, Gojo, Jujutsu Kaisen.
26:53We haven't seen an anime character take over the mainstream like this in a very long
26:57time.
26:58At this point, Gojo's just showing off.
27:09Number 20, Doraemon, Doraemon franchise.
27:13The United States has Mickey Mouse, the United Kingdom has Paddington Bear, and Japan has
27:18Doraemon.
27:21However, rather than fluffy and good-natured, Doraemon is a blue time-traveling cat robot
27:30sent to the past to help his creator's descendants through the trials and tribulations of life.
27:36Mainly, it just leads to a whole lot of hijinks.
27:39But it's the thought that counts, right?
27:46Doraemon must be doing something right, considering he's one of the faces of iconography in Japan,
27:52even becoming the Foreign Ministry's first-ever anime ambassador.
27:56Mickey and Paddington Bear better watch out, Doraemon's coming for him.
28:06Number 19, Killua, Hunter x Hunter.
28:19If you think your family's got baggage, imagine growing up around a group of world-renowned
28:24assassins.
28:25Even so, at a mere 12 years old, Killua's giving all of them a run for their title.
28:31Whether it's crackling with nan-electricity or not, the Zodiac Heir is much more interested
28:37in what it means to be a friend than what the inside of his enemies look like.
28:53While it's a slow and difficult process, tracking Killua's development from cold-blooded
28:58killer to heart-warming comrade is one of the most fulfilling parts of Hunter x Hunter.
29:03Oh, and don't worry, Killua can still totally throw down when necessary.
29:14Number 18, Char Aznable, Mubblesuit Gundam.
29:18Nothing hits the spot quite like one of those classic, star-crossed anime rivalries.
29:23And who says you can't root for the villain every now and then?
29:30Yeah, Char's far from heroic, but you wouldn't be either if the Royal Zarbi family tried
29:41to wipe you out.
29:43Joke's on them, though.
29:44He's not one to bury the hatchet.
29:46Instead, the festering hatred became a defining part of his character, and paired with the
29:51Red Comet's once-in-a-generation skills as a pilot, it made him the most compelling
30:04element of Mubblesuit Gundam.
30:07Amuro Ray is supposed to be his bitter rival, but based on sheer popularity, Char won that
30:12fight a long time ago.
30:18Number 17, Simon, Gurren Lagann.
30:21No matter the situation, no matter the hardship, the fact of it all is that Team Daigurren
30:27always needs a leader.
30:37In episode one, everyone, including Simon himself, would have put him at the very bottom
30:43of the candidate list.
30:44Well, everyone except Kamina.
30:45Simon's older brother figure believed in him enough for the both of them.
30:50So after tragedy struck Daigurren, Simon finally stepped up and became the leader Kamina always
30:56knew he could be.
31:04The way his character arc touches on grief, perseverance, and hope is nothing short of
31:09beautiful.
31:11And although piloting a giant, uber-cool mech doesn't hit either.
31:22Number 16, Ichigo Kurosaki, Bleach.
31:25With the help of some killer powers and a few downright unforgettable fight scenes,
31:30this substitute Soul Reaper turned into a full-time anime legend.
31:34But you probably already knew that.
31:36There's really no way to talk about anime in the 2000s without mentioning Ichigo and
31:41all the edgy heroes he inspired.
31:46But, while the spunky swordsman is known for stuffing hollows and quelling kudatas, Ichigo's
31:54real bankai is his unwavering love for his friends.
31:58He's willing to, and has, nearly died for them.
32:00A few times, actually.
32:02At this point, there's no question about it.
32:05Ichigo really is number one.
32:14Number 15, Kintoki Kintama.
32:17Most lazy samurai would freak out if aliens invaded Japan.
32:21For Kintoki, it's just a Tuesday.
32:24He's basically done it all.
32:26Fought in wars, endured countless tragedies, and ate more than his body weight of sugar.
32:31And that's before he opened up his freelance business.
32:35What does he specialize in, you ask?
32:36Everything.
32:37Kintoki's a wild, freewheeling character unlike any other.
32:47And as a result, he's perfectly suited to take Kintama in any crazy direction it wants
32:52to go.
32:53But amid all the chaos and odd jobs, there is one thing you can count on.
32:58You're in good hands with Kintoki.
33:08Number 14, Conan Aragawa, aka Shinichi Kudo.
33:13Detective Conan.
33:14How does a child detective become a long-standing face of a genre?
33:18Well, that's one case you don't need Conan to help close.
33:29The titular Detective Conan is just that good.
33:32Shinichi didn't let a shrinking potion stop his investigative work.
33:37Instead, he uses his sharp wit and unassuming appearance to crack cases all across Japan.
33:43He may look young, but he's been at this for over 25 years, with no signs of retirement
33:49in sight.
33:50There's just something about his work that never gets old.
33:54And by now, we're all beginning to think Shinichi won't either.
33:57Number 13, Edward Elric, Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.
34:03As a kid, all Ed wanted was to see his late mother.
34:06Sadly, that wish cost him almost everything, including his brother's body and his own
34:11arm and leg.
34:12Ed didn't stay down, though, with a metal appendage in tow.
34:16He refocused his efforts on restoring both him and his brother, even if he had to bash
34:21some homunculi's heads to do it.
34:30Every step of the way, Ed's path was marred by tragedy, hardship, and heartbreak.
34:36But he grit his teeth and kept fighting the good fight until the very end.
34:41That empowering journey is exactly what separates Edward Elric from the Fullmetal Alchemist.
34:57Number 12, Jotaro Kujo, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
35:01When you're sharing a family tree with the likes of Jonathan, Joseph, Josuke, and Jolene,
35:07standing out is easier said than done, at least for normal people.
35:11Thankfully, Jotaro Kujo is far from normal.
35:26The gruff, teenage outcast has a major chip on his shoulder and a few long-standing family
35:31rivals too.
35:32But, in classic Jotaro fashion, he takes it all on without so much as a crack appearing
35:38in his effortlessly cool facade.
35:40Since he's the one who put Dio six feet deep for good, it's safe to say Jotaro is
35:45the JoJo, maybe of all time.
35:48In a family like this, that's high praise.
35:57Number 11, Levi Ackerman, Attack on Titan.
36:02For a self-proclaimed neat freak, the captain of the scouts sure likes making a mess out
36:06of titans.
36:07Not that we're complaining.
36:09Nothing can compete with the sheer epicness of seeing Levi slice through foes in all the
36:14gloriously animated beauty.
36:21He's more than a vessel for cool fight scenes though.
36:24Just like every scout, Levi gives his heart in every single battle.
36:28To him, not a single thing matters more than his sworn duty to the greater good.
36:33Not even Eren and the gang.
36:35Using his blades, his confidence, and his sense of justice as a guide, Levi easily carved
36:40himself a path to all-time status.
36:58Number 10, Naruto Uzumaki, Naruto Franchise.
37:05From a knuckle-headed boy to the village's savior, to the hokage he's always dreamed
37:10of becoming, Naruto might just have one of the most satisfying storylines in all of fiction.
37:16Believe it.
37:24Surprisingly, he never let it get to his head either.
37:27Even if he's saving the entire shinobi world as we know it, which he does a lot by the
37:32way, Naruto is still the same kid at heart, slurping up ichiraku ramen and using his trademark
37:39sexy jutsu.
37:47While he's the number one knuckle-headed ninja to the very end, Naruto is also the
37:52only anime character who can say they threw a Rasengan in a generation-spanning anime
37:57for the history books.
37:59Number 9, Rintaro Okabe, Steins Gate.
38:03Time travel is serious business.
38:05Time travel to stop a murder is even more serious.
38:08Luckily, Houin Kyouma is on the case.
38:19If you can bypass his eccentricities, you'll discover one of anime's most endearing lead
38:24characters.
38:25He's a so-called mad scientist who really isn't all that mad after all.
38:29Still, the weight of so many timelines weighs heavy on his shoulders, especially as each
38:34one leads to more and more bloodshed.
38:37Like any scientist though, Okabe refuses to abandon his experiments until his hypothesis
38:43is proven correct.
38:45He's got heart, personality, and time on his side, but even if he fails, it's clear there
38:50isn't a single timeline where Okabe isn't fantastic.
38:56Number 8, Asuka, Neon Genesis Evangelion.
39:06A firecracker behind the seat of a mech, Asuka probably yells more lines than she speaks.
39:12That or she skips right to the point and punches anyone who dares question her authority.
39:26Where Shinji plays it safe and Rei follows orders, Asuka boldly blazes to her own fire,
39:34imbuing every scene with a crackling sense of tension, even outside of combat.
39:40And yet, Asuka's deep-seated insecurities ground her into the most identifiable character
39:46in Neon Genesis Evangelion.
39:55So, whether you're in it to see her smack some angels, yell at Shinji, or just command
40:00the screen, it's obvious Asuka rules.
40:04Number 7, L, Death Note.
40:07Odd, reclusive, but above all, effective.
40:10L has earned himself a reputation as the greatest detective in the world of Death Note.
40:16In our world though, he's known as one of the greatest, period.
40:24From L's very first scene, his peculiar posture and unorthodox speech patterns established
40:29him as a character like no other.
40:32He proved worthy of that moniker, as he brilliantly faced Light Yagami in one of the most engaging
40:37games of mental chess ever written.
40:40Part ideological symbol, part psychological mastermind, and part anime rival, there may
40:46never be a character as uniquely compelling as L, ever again.
40:58Number 6, Spike Spiegel, Cowboy Bebop.
41:02This guy wears a lot of hats.
41:04He's an ex-criminal, an intergalactic bounty hunter, an old friend, and a forgotten lover,
41:09all wrapped in one.
41:11But at the end of the day, he's really just Spike.
41:14A dude trying to make the most out of his time left.
41:26The layers to Spike's life slowly unfold throughout Cowboy Bebop, texturing the character
41:32until he feels as authentic as a living, breathing person.
41:36His struggles to atone for his past, while hoping for a future, are inherently relatable.
41:41So it's only fitting that such a well-rounded character ends off his show with a real bang.
41:54Number 5, Pikachu, Pokemon.
42:02What's the point of catching them all when Ash got the best Pokemon in the very first
42:06episode?
42:08Say what you will about its power scaling over the years, but there's simply no denying
42:11that Pikachu is the face of the franchise, if not anime as a whole.
42:16Even people who have never sought out the show or games probably know about Ash's
42:20thunderbolting companion.
42:22It perfectly toes the line between cute and cool, making it the ideal partner for just
42:27about everyone on planet Earth.
42:30Since it stayed by Ash's side for over a thousand episodes, there's plenty of Pikachu
42:35to keep going around.
42:46Number 4, Lelouch V Britannia, Code Geass, Lelouch of the Rebellion.
42:51Under the guise of a masked vigilante, Zero, Lelouch plans to bring Britannia's corrupt
42:56empire to its knees, avenging his family in the process.
43:03However, he's far more than your average bloodthirsty rebel.
43:14For one, he's the main character.
43:16That doesn't stop Lelouch from using mind-controlling Geass to murder anyone who opposes him, though.
43:23It just puts it into perspective.
43:25Lelouch's captivating mind games keep everyone in the dark, including his allies, his friends,
43:31and yes, even the audience at home.
43:33But when it's all inevitably revealed, it becomes painfully obvious why Lelouch is considered
43:39anime's finest anti-hero.
43:54Number 3, Guts, Berserk, Despair, and Suffering define who Guts is as a person.
44:00Hell, he isn't named Guts for nothing.
44:10The character endures so much torment, it begs the question, how could someone possibly
44:15move forward?
44:16Guts found the answer, and it's to carry around a big sword and start doling out payback.
44:22Berserk's relentless violence serves as a resounding point when Guts finally reclaims
44:27his agency.
44:28Yes, it's awesome and satisfying and bloody and all that, but at its core, Guts' story
44:34is about choosing your own path in life.
44:37In this case, he just happened to choose a whole lot of vindicating revenge.
44:52Number 2, Monkey D. Luffy, One Piece.
44:55The captain of the Straw Hats has no limits.
44:58No really, Luffy can stretch out his limbs like he's made of rubber, and he's used
45:02that power to clobber more than a few rogue swashbucklers in his day.
45:12All that aside though, the real treasure chest of One Piece is Luffy's unbreakable optimism.
45:18He and his crew have sailed through thousands of episodes of conflict, heartbreak, trauma,
45:23and more.
45:24And yet, Luffy is always there at the end with his big wide smile and a dream of becoming
45:29King of the Pirates.
45:40Who needs Gear 5th when you've got Resolve like that?
45:59Number 1, Goku, Dragon Ball Franchise.
46:03Iconic is an understatement here.
46:06Goku is... well, he's just Goku.
46:18There's not much to say that hasn't been said before.
46:20If there's any character with a legacy worthy of representing anime, it's the Saiyan warrior
46:25raised on Earth.
46:27So much of modern media owes a debt to Goku's well-intentioned desire to get stronger.
46:46It's given us the Kamehameha, the Spirit Bomb, Super Saiyan, and too many more to list.
46:52There truly may not be another character in all of fiction with as much influence as
46:57Goku, and if his track record is anything to go by, he'll just keep getting stronger
47:02from here.
