00:00Hi, I'm Mary Beth McAndrews from Dread Central. How are y'all?
00:03Good, how are you?
00:04Doing very well.
00:05So good. First question, are all of you puzzle freaks or is it just Jimmy who is a puzzle freak?
00:11Hell yeah.
00:12It's her. It's actually her.
00:13It's just Sam.
00:14Jimmy's not great at it.
00:16I'm okay at it.
00:17You're a puzzle freak?
00:18You're getting better, actually. Can I just say?
00:20I need a task. If she's like, find the blue ones, I can go find the blue ones.
00:25You have to be the one to find out the corner pieces.
00:27I'm the sorter, I think.
00:29Sam uses puzzle as a verb. Like, I'm like, hey, what are you doing? She's like, I'm puzzling.
00:34Yeah.
00:35And I'm like, whoa. I puzzle.
00:38Did you add it to the story or was it just a coincidence that you were also a puzzler?
00:43Well, Jimmy and I are married, so he was inspired by me puzzling.
00:48Yeah, it started by me just stealing little pieces.
00:52She would finish a puzzle and then I would just take one out.
00:55That was you.
00:56I would say something about it and then I would put it back in later.
00:59And she's like, how did that get back in there?
01:01That, gaslighting. That is gaslighting behavior.
01:04Yeah.
01:05That's actually, there's a movie called Gaslighting that's literally like that.
01:08I was going to say, that's modern day gaslighting.
01:10Incredible.
01:11Incredible. Okay, I'm a huge puzzle freak, so I had to ask about, especially the junior puzzle, how did you find that?
01:17That is the most incredible gag I've ever heard.
01:23That was, we had to clear that and both of them, Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger said yes, that we could use their likenesses.
01:33No way, that's so good.
01:34That was in there from, I think the first draft.
01:37Gosh.
01:38Which is like, they would have a junior puzzle.
01:40So good.
01:41That is incredible because I thought that it was a fever dream that my mom made up.
01:44So thank you for confirming that that movie is an actual real movie that does exist.
01:49It's real.
01:50I feel like I've never heard anyone else talk about it.
01:52But Ray, I think one of my favorite parts of this movie is the giggle that you let out throughout this film.
01:59So I wanted to hear more about how you kind of shaped Paul's character and his mannerisms because you really nail them.
02:06The giggle, well, I mean, a lot of it, when you're working, to me, the only difference between any spiritual practice and art is deadlines, like the day that you shoot.
02:19So you're constantly building and doing it until you let it go.
02:24And I think a lot of that was just the movies that we talked about.
02:30We talked about King of Comedy.
02:32I'm a huge Jim Carrey fan as well.
02:35I think that Ace Ventura 1 and 2 are on the same scale as The Godfather 1 and 2.
02:42They're both perfect movies.
02:44I like that. It's a hot take, but I really like it.
02:46They're both perfect sequels.
02:48They should be regarded in the same breadth in cinematic history.
02:52So that was definitely part of it.
02:54And just like, you know, the big obstacle with this character was I felt that he needed to be really likable.
03:02And somehow the first time that you see this guy, he fully stabs someone.
03:09And it's like, how do I create a character that's so soft and fanciful and giggly and sweet?
03:18It's like, oh wow, maybe I want to...
03:20Maybe this guy is a good guy.
03:22Maybe they should be together.
03:24I know! Parts of me were like, why am I thinking this?
03:26I don't usually think this in movies, what is going on?
03:29So good job.
03:31I just wanted to give him a hug a little bit.
03:33A little scary, but...
03:35A little scary, but you know, kind of...
03:37Dangerous, but nice.
03:39Which makes him so creepy as well.
03:43What? What do you mean?
03:47And then on the other side, I want to hear about making Sophia a pop star.
03:52And both Jimmy and Samara, how you worked together to craft this kind of...
03:56I mean, the lore of her with all of the baseball uniform from her costume and all the posters.
04:02What was that like crafting a background for a fictional pop star?
04:07I mean, that was all Jimmy.
04:09We had fun with that though.
04:11What is there? There's lose on first.
04:13We had a photo shoot and all the...
04:16Lose on first, yeah.
04:18Joan of Arc, I think she did.
04:20Medusa.
04:22It's kind of like the movies that maybe they would make that shouldn't be 100 million dollar movies in the 90s.
04:28But someone spent the money on it.
04:30Yeah.
04:32And they probably tanked.
04:34Yeah, we tanked.
04:36They didn't do that well.
04:38There was a day where we had a photo shoot that was all the album covers and movie covers.
04:43And that was so fun.
04:45We literally had a dress up box and we would just keep putting on 90s.
04:49We had her entire Wikipedia in the future planned out.
04:55What were all of her album titles.
04:59What movies was she in.
05:01Her IMDB almost.
05:03That's so fun.
05:06I want to read that just because it sounds so fun.
05:08Yeah.
05:10Well thank you all so much and congrats on Borderline.
05:12I had an absolute blast with this movie.
05:14So thank you so much.
05:18Have a good one.
