00:00Did I frighten you?
00:02Welcome to Ms. Mojo.
00:04And today, we're comparing Disney's original feature-length animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
00:09to its latest live-action remake.
00:11Spoilers will follow.
00:13Alas, she is more fair than thee.
00:18Number 10.
00:19Why she's called Snow White.
00:21The remake's colorblind casting has proven divisive among the online community.
00:25I mean, definitely pressure.
00:27The cartoon's so beloved.
00:28It's like a monumental moment in film history.
00:31Although critics have praised Rachel Zegler as the best thing the remake has going for it,
00:35her casting as the titular princess has nonetheless been the main point of controversy.
00:39While much of the backlash is rooted in prejudice,
00:42some have questioned why the character is named Snow White
00:45if her skin isn't white as snow like in the animated version.
00:48Lips red as the rose.
00:51Hair black as ebony.
00:54Skin white as snow.
00:58Snow White.
01:06This is cleverly explained in the opening scene
01:08when the young princess's mother gives birth on a cold winter night.
01:11Despite the harsh weather conditions, the baby is born happy and healthy.
01:15To commemorate this joyous occasion,
01:17the king and queen decide to name their daughter after the snowy white backdrop.
01:21To honor the day I was born, my father named me Snow White.
01:26Number 9.
01:27Snow White's parents.
01:29The 1937 classic's opening text establishes
01:32that Snow White is living under the rule of her cruel stepmother.
01:39The film doesn't provide much insight into Snow White's biological parents,
01:43although they're presumably dead.
01:44This remake confirms what we always suspected.
01:47Snow White's mother died when she was young.
01:49Her father married another woman who bewitched him with her beauty.
01:52When he mysteriously vanishes, the evil queen assumes power.
01:56You know, I really don't remember you being this opinionated.
02:01For much of the film, Snow White believes her father is missing
02:04in a distant land and will one day return.
02:06After Snow White takes a bite of the poisoned apple,
02:09the evil queen lets the princess in on her little secret.
02:11She killed Mufasa.
02:13We mean, her husband, who was also a king.
02:15The queen stole everything from all of us.
02:17Number 8.
02:18Cleaning House with the Dwarfs.
02:20The remake recreates some iconic scenes,
02:22cuts out others, and occasionally combines a few.
02:25My parents always said this forest was a magical place.
02:28When Snow White arrives at the dwarfs' cottage this time,
02:31she immediately hits the hay.
02:33After getting acquainted with her new roommates,
02:35Snow White motivates them to clean up the house
02:37with her and the woodland critters.
02:39They make the task fun by humming a merry tune.
02:41It's a human!
02:42What did you think I was?
02:43Nothing.
02:44Ghost!
02:45In the animated version, the dwarfs arrive home to find that Snow White
02:47and the animals have already made the cottage spotless.
02:50Yet we do get a scene where Snow White instructs the dwarfs
02:53to wash up for dinner.
02:54This remake removes the bluddle-uddle-um-dum song,
02:57but the updated version of Whistle While You Work
03:00essentially serves the same purpose.
03:02Oh, whistle while you work.
03:05Whistle, whistle, whistle.
03:07Number 7.
03:08The Queen Has More Than One Lackey.
03:11Like in the original film,
03:12the remake's huntsman is ordered to kill Snow White,
03:15but he can't go through with it.
03:16The queen is evil.
03:17He must flee into the woods.
03:19The animated huntsman fills the box the evil queen gave him
03:21with a pig heart.
03:23It was probably wise to have that happen offscreen.
03:26The remake's huntsman doesn't resort to slaying a pig,
03:28instead filling the box with an apple.
03:31Obviously, this doesn't trick the queen,
03:33who has other minions at her beck and call.
03:35Find Snow White.
03:37The queen forced several townsfolk to become her guards,
03:40who she sends to track the princess down.
03:42Our villainess doesn't just have guards this time.
03:45She has backup singers and dancers to assist
03:47whenever she feels the urge to spontaneously break out
03:50into a villain song.
03:51Number 6.
03:52More interactions between Snow White and Evil Queen.
03:55Although Snow White and the Evil Queen clearly know each other
03:58in the animated feature,
03:59they surprisingly share few encounters.
04:02Go far into the forest.
04:04Find some secluded lane where she can pick wildflowers.
04:10Yes, your majesty.
04:12And there, my faithful huntsman,
04:16you will kill her.
04:19During the first act,
04:20the queen vainly watches the oblivious princess from afar.
04:23Their only direct interaction is when the queen de-glams,
04:27tricking Snow White into eating a poisoned apple.
04:29Now take the apple, dear, and make a wish.
04:34The remake attempts to form more of a rivalry
04:36by adding a few scenes.
04:37Early on, Snow White asks the queen to show more kindness
04:40to her people and mercy to a thief named Jonathan.
04:43The queen isn't thrilled with Snow's insubordination,
04:45and the whole fairest-in-the-land thing
04:47is the straw that breaks the camel's back.
04:49Snow White also confronts the queen during the climax,
04:52regaining control of her kingdom.
04:54Number five, Dopey speaks out.
04:57They look different,
04:58but the dwarves are pretty much the same personality-wise.
05:01You're called happy because you're happy,
05:03and I'm called grumpy because I'm...
05:06misunderstood.
05:08Grumpy is still grumpy,
05:09Sneezy is still Sneezy,
05:10and Doc is still Doc-y.
05:13Dopey also has his dopey moments,
05:15but he's the one dwarf given an arc.
05:17When the other dwarves tease him,
05:18Snow White gets to the root of why Dopey doesn't talk.
05:21She deduces that he's afraid to speak.
05:23Snow White motivates Dopey to express himself
05:25by teaching him to whistle.
05:27Later, as our heroes try to figure out
05:29what to do about the queen,
05:30Dopey finally speaks up.
05:32Just as Snow White helped Dopey find his voice,
05:34he provides words of inspiration
05:36that send the princess back to her kingdom.
05:38You point me in the right direction?
05:40Oh, and the narrator?
05:42That was Dopey, too.
05:43Number four, new songs.
05:45In addition to the dwarves' washing song,
05:47the remake removes I'm Wishing,
05:49One Song,
05:50and With a Smile and a Song.
05:52Most notably absent,
05:53other than an instrumental version,
05:55is Someday My Prince Will Come,
05:56because this Snow White doesn't wait for anyone
05:59other than her father to return.
06:01Hi-Ho gets a few new lyrics
06:02to reflect the dwarves' personalities as well.
06:09Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, and Jack Feldman
06:11also contributed several new tunes,
06:13including an ensemble piece in Good Things Grow,
06:16an I Want song in Waiting on a Wish,
06:18a villain song in All is Fair,
06:20a comedic song in Princess Problems,
06:22and a love ballad in A Hand Meets a Hand.
06:25It's a soundtrack you can listen to while you work.
06:28It felt very thrilling and humbling
06:30to get the chance to write some new songs
06:33for the one that started it all.
06:35Number three, Snow White's love interest.
06:37Of Disney's animated couples,
06:39Snow White and the prince
06:40admittedly have the most rushed romance.
06:43The prince shows up in the beginning,
06:44sings to Snow White, and boom.
06:46I'll wait for you.
06:51Their hearts are forever intertwined,
06:53although we're not sure if she even got his name.
06:56In any case, he returns for the finale
06:58to deliver true love's kiss,
06:59despite only meeting Snow White once.
07:02I'll wait for you.
07:05In the remake, Snow White's love interest
07:07drops the prince title, but gains a name.
07:09Jonathan is a thief who Snow White helps escape from captivity.
07:13Jonathan and his band of rebel bandits
07:15return the favor when they encounter Snow White in the forest.
07:18You have to run.
07:19In addition to delivering the life-saving kiss,
07:21there's also a narrow brush with death involving an arrow.
07:25Number two, the queen's demise.
07:27The third act is where the remake takes the most liberties.
07:30Following the original's blueprint,
07:32Snow White eats the poisoned apple
07:33and is awakened with a kiss from her true love.
07:36This time, though, the dwarves don't chase the queen
07:38up a mountain where she falls to her death.
07:40The queen escapes to her kingdom,
07:42but her victory is short-lived.
07:44After rising from slumber, Snow White returns home,
07:46encouraging everyone else in the kingdom
07:48to stand against the queen.
07:50Time to restore our kingdom.
07:52Even the mirror turns on the queen,
07:54saying that she will never be the fairest.
07:56Enraged, the queen shatters the mirror,
07:58deus ex machina-ing herself out of the movie.
08:01Aw, so the vultures don't get to consume her remains?
08:03Poor little critters.

08:24Number one, fascism and rebellion themes.
08:27The original film doesn't delve deep
08:29into the politics of this land.
08:31I don't understand.
08:32She's mad, jealous of you.
08:34She'll stop at nothing.
08:35But who?
08:36The queen.
08:37The queen?
08:38It's hard for some to think of it.
08:39We don't even see any of the kingdom's inhabitants
08:41outside of Snow White, the queen, and the huntsman.
08:43We suppose it doesn't really matter.
08:45All we know is that the queen is evil
08:47and she's oppressing Snow White.
08:49In the remake, she's oppressing everyone in the kingdom,
08:51even forcing civilians to become enforcers.
08:54You stole everything from all of us.
08:56The film contains a clear anti-fascist message
08:59with Snow White, the bandits, and the dwarfs
09:01forming a rebellion against the queen.
09:03The film may simplify these themes
09:05with pretty words and a crossbow
09:08Still, it's a reminder that change starts
09:10with someone speaking out.
09:12I'm not afraid to fight.
09:13What did you think of the Snow White remake
09:15and these changes?
09:16Let us know in the comments.
09:18Luxuries, they don't need luxuries.
09:20It confuses them.
