Why spend thousands on a car when you can have £1000 worth of fun instead? In this video, we take a 2008 Mazda 6 and prove why cheap used cars are some of the best purchases you can make. From financial benefits to unexpected driving dynamics, here’s why everyone needs a beater car in their life!
Buying a cheap used car can be one of the smartest financial decisions. No monthly payments, low insurance costs, and minimal depreciation make owning a budget-friendly car a stress-free experience. Whether you need a daily driver, backup car, winter beater, or just something to thrash around without worry, an old but reliable car can save you thousands compared to financing a new one.
For just £1000 (or $1000 in the US market), you might expect a clapped-out rust bucket, but the Mazda 6 from 2008 still has a few luxury touches! We take a full walkaround and check out its heated seats, leather interior (if equipped), sunroof, cruise control, and all the gadgets Mazda packed in back in the day. Can a cheap car still feel premium? You’ll be surprised!
Buying a cheap second-hand car comes with the big question: Will it break immediately? Mazda has a reputation for reliable cars, but does the 2008 Mazda 6 hold up after 15+ years of use? We discuss common issues, rust concerns, engine reliability, maintenance tips, and whether this bargain-priced sedan is actually worth owning.
One of the best things about a cheap old car is that you can enjoy it without stress. No worries about scratches, dents, or depreciation—just drive and have fun! We take the Mazda 6 on the road to see how it feels, enjoying the experience of a car you can beat on without guilt.
For a £1000 car, you wouldn’t expect much in terms of driving dynamics. But the Mazda 6 has always been a driver’s car, and we put it to the test! Taking it on some spirited drives, we see how it handles corners, acceleration, and high-speed fun. Could this be the best cheap enthusiast car for the money?

00:55All you do, plug the OBD reader just down there,
00:58and then you can scan your car to find out what's wrong with it.
01:02And of course, I have two faults, but we're going to clear them.
01:05And there we go, our faults are cleared.
01:07The thing that sets OBD11 apart from all the other OBD readers,
01:12is that they have one-click apps.
01:15You can do cool stuff like leave your exhaust permanently open,
01:19allow playing video while you're moving.
01:22This is a personal favorite, turn off the active sound design.
01:26You know the fake exhaust noise that's in the cabin?
01:29One click turns that off.
01:30OBD11 is compatible with BMW, of course,
01:34but also the Volkswagen Auto Group, so Volkswagen, Skoda, Seat and Audi,
01:39and also the Toyota Group, including Lexus.
01:42I do have a discount code, which is MIC,
01:45and you can use that to get this discount.
01:48Make sure to click the link in the description below.
01:52Right then, let's get back to talking about that thing, eh?
01:54So philosophy.
01:55When I was here talking about my M2,
01:57I talked about how you can potentially financially ruin yourself
02:02by buying an expensive car.
02:04Well, this is the opposite end of the spectrum.
02:07If you do this to yourself, you essentially secure your future.
02:10Nobody needs a car payment on a thousand pound car.
02:13This could be your first car, and this could be your last car.
02:16I should also mention high mileage.
02:19140,000 miles on the clock.
02:23But you want to be careful when you're doing something like this.
02:25Pay attention to a few things.
02:27Number one, the mileage, eh, high is okay.
02:30Number two, the brand.
02:31Do this with a Japanese car.
02:33If you're going to buy cheap, buy Japanese.
02:35You know why?
02:36They might rust, but they won't break.
02:39This car's kind of almost characterful in the fact that, like, it's fucked,
02:44but it will still drive.
02:46I'll show you some of those quirks as we go through.
02:49And then the third thing is the service history.
02:51Now, if you're doing this properly,
02:53you make sure the car has a full service history.
02:55You know, it's been owned by some 65-year-old Donny
03:00that's changed the oil on time for 25 years.
03:04But I didn't do that.
03:06This car was some young Polish Don's first car.
03:10He changed the oil on himself.
03:12He changed the clutch himself.
03:13He changed a bunch of shit himself.
03:15He did the brakes himself.
03:17He repainted the wheels himself.
03:20I mean, look at the quality here.
03:24That's, um, I will say the brakes are actually in reasonable condition.
03:29You could just see that the, oh yeah, it's okay.
03:34You can see the paint mark.
03:35But yeah, so if you're going to do this, get one with a good service history.
03:38Don't be like me.
03:39You're going to hear me giggling throughout this video
03:41because this car makes me happy.
03:43I love the idea of like spending a pittance
03:46and having transportation that is actually good.
03:49It just, it feels great.
03:50You know, I've been driving this more than I have my M2.
03:53Just because like, if I'm going to the shops,
03:55I'd rather take this.
03:56I can put it in car park spaces between two cars
04:00and I don't want to die.
04:03One of the points in my M2 video was
04:05that type of car is great if you've got somebody to impress, right?
04:09And I've got you guys to impress.
04:10I need people to click on the thumbnails.
04:12So an M2 almost makes sense.
04:14If I'm going somewhere
04:16where it does not make a fucking difference
04:18if people think I'm cool or successful,
04:21now I'm driving this
04:22because I prefer driving this.
04:24And we're going to get to this point throughout the video.
04:26But I think this is more fun to drive than my M2.
04:29Bit crazy, I know.
04:30Right then, let me take you on a walk around.
04:33So this is a Mazda 6.
04:35It's the two liter engine with about 160 horsepower.
04:39It's the same engine Mazda put in just about everything.
04:43They're still putting it in cars today
04:45and they were putting it in cars from like 2003.
04:48It is a five-door because it is a hatchback body style.
04:53And this is where we get into the good stuff.
04:55Look at the size of that fucking boot.
04:58I could sleep in here.
05:00My wife detailed the inside of the car
05:02and I detailed the outside.
05:03But this was like, I don't know, a month ago
05:05and I plan on never washing this again.
05:07So who cares, right?
05:08She did clean the inside.
05:09So the inside is actually kind of nice.
05:11And it's a hatchback.
05:13So you could, if you fold the seats down,
05:15you could probably,
05:18I think you could put a sofa in there.
05:20Like a small little love seat.
05:22You could definitely put a wardrobe in.
05:24And it's got the twin exhaust pipes
05:26because Mazda do that when you get the two liter engine
05:28to make you feel cool.
05:30You can see the previous owner that I mentioned
05:32has bumped it into some things.
05:34You can see bits of damage.
05:36Honestly, there's bits like that
05:37all over the fucking car.
05:38Who cares?
05:39Look at this.
05:40I'll show you something cool.
05:40Now this is something I am not used to.
05:42Passenger space in the back.
05:46Come on, mate.
05:47You could like, okay.
05:49We're going to get into this
05:50on the driving parts of this video, right?
05:53But this is a good, comfortable luxury car.
05:59I'm not even kidding.
06:02You can have four adults in here.
06:04Like I have a OCD about having the seats
06:07at the same distance, which they are.
06:09But the legroom is great back here.
06:12This is more spacious than some modern cars
06:14that I've been in that are way bigger externally,
06:17but don't make use of the interior space.
06:19Seats are really comfy.
06:21It fits me.
06:22It's a good car.
06:24And okay, we're going to get into this more.
06:26We're going to take it driving.
06:27Let me finish walking you around the car.
06:30Electric windows, even in the back.
06:33When Mazda built this in,
06:35I think this model came out about 2005, 2006.
06:38This was the top of the Mazda range,
06:41unless you went for an SUV.
06:42But if you wanted a saloon car,
06:43which in the day was the popular choice,
06:45this is the best you could get from Mazda.
06:48This was trying to compete
06:50with not the BMW 3 Series,
06:52but the BMW 5 Series.
06:54This car wasn't designed to compete
06:56with like Corollas and Yarises.
06:58This was a luxury car.
07:00In 2008, you would have gone to a showroom
07:02and test driven a Mercedes E-Class
07:04and thought, oh, my monthlies are a bit high.
07:07And then you would have gone to Mazda,
07:09test drove this and thought,
07:10oh, the monthlies are really good.
07:12You could buy it for a thousand pounds now
07:14with a bit of miles on.
07:15Let's finish the walk around
07:17with the driver's seat.
07:18It's got a bit of wear, nothing too bad.
07:20It's a lovely place to be.
07:22This is the crazy thing.
07:23Mazda were putting effort
07:25into making cars in 2008.
07:27So was every other car manufacturer.
07:29So buying a car this old
07:31doesn't necessarily mean
07:33you get a shit product.
07:34Yeah, you might have a slightly older product,
07:36but there's no infotainment.
07:37But the stuff that matters,
07:38the way the pedals feel,
07:40the way you sit,
07:41the positioning of the armrest,
07:43the way these buttons fall to hand,
07:45the reach to the steering wheel,
07:47it just all feels good.
07:50And there's more good feelings
07:52as we get out on the road.
07:53There are some questions
07:54about reliability on cars this old.
07:56And I have had some problem.
07:58I'll turn the ignition on the car on
08:00and I'll show you
08:02some of the car's quirks
08:03because it's almost 20 years old.
08:05Listen to this.
08:12There's something wrong
08:13with the blower motor.
08:14It's probably not the blower motor.
08:16It's probably the thing
08:17that directs where air goes.
08:19It's fucked.
08:20So it makes that noise
08:21every time you turn the ignition.
08:22Also, it's got a weak battery.
08:23So on the back seat,
08:24I've got a battery charger,
08:27like booster thing
08:28in case I can't start the car.
08:30Actually this morning,
08:31I haven't driven it for a week.
08:32I was very worried it wouldn't start.
08:34So this is my procedure
08:36to get in the car this morning.
08:38Let's see if the piece of shit will turn on.
08:46Come on, baby.
08:50Oh, it's making the noise.
08:52That's usually a good sign.
08:54Come on, baby.
08:58Let's fucking go.
08:59It actually started.
09:00You know, it works.
09:01It's just a bit iffy.
09:03All right, let's get out of here.
09:04Get on the road
09:05and we'll talk more
09:06about how the car drives.
09:07An important point to mention
09:10with cars like this
09:10is that you don't have to baby it
09:13or care about it.
09:14If there are some bushes
09:16that are sticking out from the road
09:17and they touch your paint,
09:19on my M2, I'd be like,
09:20oh my God, no, must avoid death.
09:23No, because it's like a £5,000 bill
09:26if you scratch a quarter panel.
09:27In this car,
09:28every panel's already scratched.
09:30I don't care.
09:32Like, you're not worried
09:32in town situations
09:34that someone's going to pull out
09:35and, you know, dent the car
09:37and then you're going to have
09:38this insurance headache to deal with.
09:41And now you're going to have to declare it
09:43on your insurance
09:44for the next five years
09:45and all of this shit.
09:47Someone could just crash into this now
09:49and I'm like, all right,
09:50I'll buy another one.
09:52Having a car you don't care about
09:55is a superpower.
09:56I'm about to do something
09:58that I would never do
10:00in my nice car.
10:02And that is go to a supermarket
10:04and park next to humans.
10:06I would park right here,
10:08which is as far from the entrance
10:10as physically possible,
10:11because then I have less chance
10:12of somebody, you know,
10:14but do you know where I'm going to park now?
10:15I'm going to park next to the fucking doggy.
10:19I could park right here.
10:24Look at this.
10:25I would never ever in a million years
10:28leave the M2 like this.
10:30But you see, it's so empowering.
10:32Like, I'm not even joking.
10:34It sounds like I'm being cringe
10:35and silly and joking, whatever,
10:36but I'm really not.
10:37Maybe you won't understand this
10:39until you've owned like a really nice car
10:40that you've worked super hard for
10:42and means a lot to you, right?
10:44That's what the M2 is to me.
10:45But this car, I don't care.
10:48Drive into it.
10:50I'll drive it into something.
10:51I really couldn't give a shit.
10:54And that is a powerful way to feel,
10:57because it means every journey
10:59is automatically less stressful.
11:01Every journey doesn't have to be
11:02a risk assessment of,
11:04oh, we're not going to go to this hotel
11:06because the area is not great,
11:07so I can't park the M2 in the car park
11:09and all of this shit.
11:11You don't have to deal with any of that.
11:12You just get in the car and drive it, you know?
11:14And if someone crashes into it,
11:15who the fuck cares?
11:17And immediately,
11:18the first thing you notice in this car
11:21is just how smooth it is.
11:24The engine, on 140-odd thousand miles,
11:29it's a four-cylinder two-liter.
11:31It should not be this smooth.
11:34But it's lovely.
11:35It's tractable.
11:36Look at this.
11:371,500 rpm I'm turning right now.
11:39And it's just like, yeah, waft.
11:42We come into a national speed limit.
11:44We drop a gear.
11:48You know, it hasn't got a lot of power,
11:51but it's got enough to get you going.
11:53The car's also not too wide,
11:55so you're not too worried
11:57sending it through some of these narrower roads.
12:00Look at this.
12:01Fifth gear, 50 miles an hour,
12:03just over 2,000 rpm.
12:05This is how it sits on the motorway,
12:07just over 2,500 rpm.
12:09I can whisper in here
12:11and you can still hear me.
12:12The suspension's super cushiony and soft.
12:16The steering is direct.
12:18Slow down so we can have a little bit of fun.
12:21Let's go.
12:23Oh.
12:33It's not even that slow to 60.
12:37A car doesn't need to be fast to be fun.
12:41But you know what's crazy?
12:43In the middle of every corner,
12:45this steering rack is telling me stuff
12:48which I am not used to at the M2.
12:50Let's go through this a little bit quickly.
12:53And as I turn in,
12:53yeah, the steering's doing stuff.
12:58It's great.
12:59It's brilliant.
13:00You don't get that with electronic racks anymore.
13:03And you know what?
13:04I've been driving electronic racks for so long
13:06that I forgot what a good hydraulic steering is like.
13:10And don't get me wrong,
13:11this is still super light.
13:12Like, I can, like, you know,
13:14it doesn't do much.
13:16Off there, we're moving a little bit.
13:18It doesn't do that much off center.
13:20It's not like some super quick steering rack.
13:22And it's incredibly light.
13:23But it drives well.
13:26Like, it's competent.
13:28It can get around the corners at a good speed.
13:31And it's giving me a little bit back.
13:33And this is what gets me onto this point now,
13:36which is that I would rather come out here
13:39and drive this than the M2.
13:43Because I feel like I'm closer to the limit in this car.
13:47In the M2, the limits are so high.
13:50It can go around some of these corners
13:51at 100, 120 miles an hour.
13:54And there's a number of reasons
13:55why I don't want to go around these corners
13:57at 100 and 120 miles an hour.
13:59One, because I might, you know, die.
14:01And two, because I'll lose my license
14:02and all this stuff.
14:03But in this car, it feels like 60 is pretty much the limit
14:08of how fast it can go around some of these corners.
14:11I am now driving basically as fast as the car can go.
14:14So it feels fun.
14:15You feel like you're really driving.
14:17And that's on, you know, country lanes
14:19and trying to have fun and drive a little bit faster
14:21and all of this stuff that I talk about
14:22in my videos all the time.
14:24My wife went through a big pothole the other day
14:27and she exploded one of the rear tires.
14:29So we went to a tire garage,
14:32just limped the car along on its flat tire.
14:34The other rear tire was kind of cracked.
14:36So we replaced both.
14:38The guy asked me, what tires do you want?
14:40I said, whatever's cheapest.
14:42I put two new rear tires
14:44on the back wheels of this car for like 80 quid.
14:47Couldn't tell you what brand they are.
14:49Honestly, don't care what brand they are
14:51because it makes no difference.
14:52It's the combination of the fact
14:54that it's actually a good car.
14:56Like it drives well.
14:58Look at this.
14:59I'm just, I'm going to where I need to go to.
15:02And that's combined with the fact that it's cheap.
15:05When you have something good and something cheap,
15:08it feels like a cheat code.
15:10It feels like you're not giving anything up
15:12where you should be.
15:14It feels like you've discovered something
15:16that nobody else knows about.
15:19Because everyone else has got their, you know,
15:20300 to 500 pound car payment.
15:23And you're here driving around for free.
15:25I love this thing.
15:26Honestly, I've genuinely fallen for this car.
15:28It's so good.
15:30If I had to summarize this car,
15:32here's what I'd say.
15:33Normal cars are normal.
15:36If you want a car, right?
15:40You don't want a sports car.
15:41You don't want a fast car.
15:42You don't want an expensive car.
15:44You don't want a special car.
15:46If you just want a car, a vehicle
15:48to get from A to B
15:50and maybe sometimes have a bit of fun,
15:52just buy something like this.
15:54Any normal car, right?
15:56This is the same.
15:57Nice and quiet.
15:58It's nice and comfortable.
16:00It will get you where you're going.
16:02But that is a ridiculous statement
16:05because it costs a thousand pounds.
16:08So why is anybody paying for newer cars?
16:11So you really have no reason not
16:19to have one of these.
16:20Like even if you have a nice car,
16:22you should just buy one of these
16:24to keep the mileage off of your nice car.
16:26My name's Mick.
16:27I drive cars.
16:30Peace.
