President Donald Trump has ordered Education Secretary Linda McMahon to begin the work to dismantle the Department of Education. An executive order that was ceremoniously announced on Thursday, March 20, acknowledges that Trump does not have the power to formally abolish the Education Department, which can only be done by Congress. Instead, it directs McMahon to take the necessary steps to dissolve the department to the extent that she is able.

00:00We're going to sign a very important document, and we're going to be on our way.
00:04People have wanted to do this for many, many years, for many, many decades.
00:08And I don't know, no president ever got around to doing it.
00:11But I'm getting around to doing it.
00:12So thank you very much.
00:16We're going to be returning education, very simply, back to the states where it belongs.
00:32And this is a very popular thing to do.
00:35But much more importantly, it's a common sense thing to do.
00:38And it's going to work.
00:39Absolutely, it's going to work.
00:41And I can tell you from dealing with the governors and others in the state, they want
00:46it so badly.
00:47They want to take their children back and really teach their children individually.
00:53Probably the cost will be half, and the education will be maybe many, many times better.
01:00So we look forward to this.
