00:00Wicked and SNL star Bowen Yang is saying it's a miracle they were able to have Wicked on the big
00:04screen given our current political climate. Speaking at BFI Flair during a screen talk
00:10on Thursday in London, Yang opened up about being a part of the massive blockbuster.
00:14I was daunted by the biblical precision and just the passion that everybody was bringing to it.
00:19But we're all in over our heads. Everyone except John, right? He was the only person who needed
00:24to be above water with it and steer the ship. The rest of us were kind of out to sea.
00:28Yang also discussed the director encouraging him to improvise a lot of the takes.
00:32I said, OK, I'm now going to do just a fun one. They're not going to use this. Like,
00:37I'm not going to outdo screenwriters Winnie Holtzman and Dana Fox. No way.
00:41Then John used all of my ad libs. Yang also noted that the themes of Wicked,
00:45however commercially successful, are still politically tragic. It's crazy that Wicked
00:50is out in the world and doing so well when it's a story about racism and fascism, all these things.
00:56I'm like, oh, yeah, it is miraculous that it's out there. Like the only reason that
01:00the wizard has powers is because he creates problems for other people.
