00:00Good evening, and welcome to our little soiree of late medieval music, music which has the
00:20name Ars Subtilior.
00:23It is a very subtle art, and the composers that you will hear tonight are all stemmed
00:31all from a manuscript called the Chantilly Codex, and they're names that nobody probably
00:41is familiar with, but that doesn't say anything about the quality of the music and the interest
00:46it has.
00:50The poster that you've seen, the announcement of this program, sort of has my name in big
00:58letters all over it, but the reality is that this is not a solo endeavor, this is very
01:06much teamwork, and as such we have, as the Settimana Musicale del Trecento, as a yearly
01:18summer course since 2016, we have every year held courses studying this particular music,
01:28music from the 14th century.
01:33This year, which is the 8th year, we have been fortunate that we had the opportunity
01:40to do it right now, the last four days, in London, and that is in Sam's Music Room and
01:51Cinema, thanks to the incredible gift of hospitality of Olivier, who runs Sam's Music Room, and
02:07this is for us a fantastic occasion, because it's very hard to find venues where you can
02:13all day long practice, give courses, give lessons, so we are extremely grateful to him
02:23for this gift to our Settimana.
02:27The connection to Sam's was established by my great friend Fred Thomas, a great musician
02:36himself, who lives nearby, who for years has been a very good friend of Olivier, and so
02:45I also have to thank Fred for his incredible organizational input, and just also musical
02:56input, because he's part of the band that is playing tonight.
03:01So thank you Fred.
03:04In the third place, I have to thank Father Mark, who has also very generously given us
03:15the possibility to rehearse in this church, and also the possibility to, tonight, actually
03:24have the concert, so thank you very much to Father Mark for this.
03:32And of course, last but not least, to the team of teachers, who are Jill Feldman, my
03:40wife, who takes care of the vocal coaching, Claudia Raffani, who takes care of the lute
03:47playing and ensembles, and Claire Pigagnol, who takes care of the harp players, and also
03:58teaches the ensembles.
04:00We are a team that has been working together now for a long time, and Claire used to be
04:10long ago a student of mine in the medieval department in Drossingen, where Claudia Raffani
04:17was also teaching.
04:20I hope I've said enough, and thank you for coming to this concert, and I was asked to
04:33remind you that a donation would be very much appreciated by SANS, who, without asking
04:42for anything, put on all this work, and these shows, and what they do at the SANS music
04:50room and theatre.
04:52Thanks again for that, and have a nice evening.
