00:00G'day and welcome to another week of our tips. Obviously I'm here this week, the floods,
00:06which kept me marooned.
00:09People were saying they preferred it the other way.
00:12Yeah, I've actually had some text messages to the effect of, it just wasn't the same.
00:17That's what I was getting.
00:18Oh, okay, sorry.
00:19Yeah, no.
00:20I didn't get it.
00:21But that was from my mum.
00:22I didn't get those texts.
00:23No, you didn't. Yeah, no, you got the opposite. I get it. Anyway...
00:26Round three.
00:28But round two, mate. What about the upsets? This competition is unbelievable.
00:34Well, I was two from eight. And I always feel like at the start, the form's pretty easy
00:39to pick, really. And two from eight. I mean, you got four. I'm bringing that up already.
00:43No, no, no. I'm not saying a word.
00:45Yeah, no. I realise that. But anyway, let's get down to this week and see if I can't be
00:49a little bit better.
00:50We've got a few different this week, too.
00:51We have got a few different, but yeah. But this is hard to pick, as you rightly say.
00:57Every season that goes past, don't you reckon, it's getting more that way?
01:01It's getting more difficult to predict, which is probably a good thing.
01:04And I think the NRL would be loving it, Webby. They would have loved last weekend's game.
01:08Well, because you need your team to win. If you're going to support an NRL club and your
01:11team's not winning, it makes it pretty hard to keep going around year after year.
01:14Yeah, turn it up every weekend or every second weekend.
01:17No, for sure. But anyway, let's get into this. Thursday, we have the grand final rematch
01:20down at Melbourne and Amy Park. Of course, the storm up against the Panthers.
01:23Now, of course, the Panthers, who were scintillating in the first round, then get themselves beaten
01:30by the Roosters.
01:31And I didn't see this game, but apparently a very competitive game.
01:35But then you look at, they're coming off a bye, Melbourne.
01:40And they were the pick of the first round. You'd have to go the storm, and we both have.
01:45Yeah, we have. Amy Park as well, on a Thursday night.
01:50You'd think, obviously, they're fresh as daisies, aren't they?
01:53But also, looking at them in round one, they look like they're in a bit of a mood, don't they?
01:57Yeah, yeah.
01:58It's like, you know what? And I reckon, Bellyache hates losing that grand final.
02:02Yeah, you took the words out of his mouth. This is a grand final replay.
02:06He will look to put them to the absolute sword, I reckon.
02:09And no Dylan Edwards. He's a massive loss.
02:11Yes, yeah.
02:12He's got a bit of a leg problem, so he might be out for three or four weeks.
02:17That's a big loss. And they've lost a couple. Every year they lose two or three.
02:22I mean, the wheels have got to come off at some stage.
02:25They can't keep going on and on. But anyway, that'll be a cracking game.
02:28To our Friday games, in Auckland we had the Warriors up against the Roosters,
02:31who we just spoke about. They beat the Panthers, so they're obviously going well.
02:36Auckland, however, wow. They were very, very good.
02:42They're over there in Vegas. They were the worst team by far over in Vegas.
02:47Yes, yes. Lacklustre.
02:48Exactly. They've come back and obviously something's kicked in.
02:52I'm not sure what the coach has said or whatever, but it's baffling, isn't it?
02:58Yeah, but the only problem the Warriors generally have is they can be that.
03:02They've been that regularly over the years, haven't they?
03:05Oh, 100%.
03:06But you're on them, and I don't blame you for that.
03:09I just thought the Roosters were quite compelling with some of the stuff I read about the way that they played
03:14and how good a game it actually was.
03:16They were great. They were physical.
03:17Yeah.
03:18Collins.
03:19And him coming back. Like, Lindsay, he's a leader.
03:23He is a leader.
03:24Especially with Big Jared not playing.
03:27Yeah, well, they do miss him, for sure.
03:29And of course, the other game is here in Queensland, the Queensland Derby.
03:33Broncos up against the Cowboys.
03:35Well, the Cowboys, they're just a bad story at the moment.
03:38Oh.
03:39And you'd have to think their coach is under enormous pressure.
03:42Well, you'd hope, being a Bronco, you wouldn't be hoping this is the weekend.
03:47They're turning around.
03:48And this is the danger, isn't it?
03:50They'll come here.
03:51They'll come here with the guns loaded.
03:53And there's no two ways about that.
03:54But I don't know if the players want to load the guns up.
03:58I think that's half the problem.
03:59I don't know.
04:00No, no, I agree.
04:02As we said, we've said it a thousand times, you know, defence is about attitude.
04:06And to get 78 points put on you in two games, to me, that smells of...
04:11And the attitude of a club is always driven by the coach.
04:14Yeah, yeah.
04:15I don't care what anyone says.
04:16I mean, you can have a bad try, things can be going poorly.
04:19But when you can see that many points, it just says,
04:21I really don't feel like playing for you.
04:23I think.
04:24I could be wrong.
04:25But I never blame the coach for a missed tackle or a dropped ball or anything.
04:28Well, that's a good thing because you did a lot of it.
04:30But that's on you.
04:32Yeah, of course it is.
04:33As an individual.
04:34You know what I mean?
04:35I'd never blame the coach.
04:36I agree.
04:37I agree that it's not to be blamed on coaches.
04:39But the one thing you can't escape is you played under coaches.
04:43Yeah, yeah.
04:44Who you respected enough and wanted to please enough that you'd never blame them.
04:49Because you knew it was your responsibility.
04:50That helps.
04:51And there's an agenda.
04:52And that's because you're...
04:54In part, it's because of the respect you have for the coach.
04:57Yeah.
04:58I think coaches can lose that respect.
05:00And that's what drives that poor attitude.
05:03I could be totally wrong about that, too.
05:05You don't know unless you're in there.
05:06Well, Nanai got dropped the week before.
05:08Yeah.
05:09And that, to me, feels like panic.
05:12Yeah, but that could be a smokey, too.
05:14Well, yeah.
05:15We don't know what's going on there.
05:16The long and short of that long diatribe is that we're both on the Bronx.
05:19And I'd have to think they're going to win.
05:21I hope they do, anyway.
05:22It's a sad day.
05:23We have the Sharks up against the Rabbitohs, who are unbeaten.
05:26Can you believe that?
05:27Wayne's a genius.
05:28Well, of course he's a genius.
05:30But seriously, with who they haven't got, Latrelle beat out.
05:34And a couple of others.
05:35I mean, they shouldn't have picked up those two guys.
05:38Young Jamie Humphrey used to kick that field goal.
05:40Yes.
05:41He showed some poise.
05:42He's a good player, isn't he?
05:43It's a solid player, too, isn't he?
05:45I watched their first game from start to finish.
05:47He's very good.
05:49He looks more like a forward than a halfback.
05:51Yeah, well, that's why his buns are up.
05:53Yeah, I know.
05:54Yeah, no, exactly.
05:55But you're saying they're going so well, but you've tipped against them.
05:59Yeah, because the Sharks are going a whole head better.
06:02They're going well in the context of what they haven't got.
06:04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:05And they're being pretty gritty.
06:06Yeah, yeah.
06:07But seriously, and that was over the Dragons.
06:09I'm not going to get excited about that.
06:10No, no, no, I'm sure.
06:11But the Sharks, however, they put the Cowboys, who are dismal, I get that.
06:15Yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:16But they're good in Vegas as well.
06:18They're going good.
06:19I just get a feeling about them.
06:20I think they could be a bit closer to being the real deal.
06:22Yeah, no, there's a...
06:24And Craig's been giving...
06:25I tell you about Fitzgibbon, mate.
06:26Yep.
06:27Like, I played on the Australian side with him a number of times.
06:29He is all business with footy.
06:30Yeah, yeah.
06:31And got that good old school, let's work it, let's work really hard at this.
06:34Yeah, yeah, yep.
06:35And I really think that's starting to show on how the Sharks are playing.
06:37Yeah, and I think Faneuil Blake is starting to fit in there a little bit better,
06:41know the style of game they want to play.
06:43Yeah, they've always had a good forward pack, haven't they?
06:45Yeah, yeah.
06:46For some reason.
06:47But it's a case of getting them to fire.
06:49Yeah, Kennedy, the fullback, he had a great game on the weekend.
06:52Yeah, but he's only a fullback, though.
06:54OK, this is an interesting game, the next one.
06:58The Dolphins at the Zatracliff up against the West Tigers.
07:01Now, I've gone to the West Tigers...
07:03Yep.
07:04..because I really feel like beating the Eels the way they did...
07:08Bit of confidence.
07:09..but just I feel like they just might be turned into a different side.
07:13And then Galvin, who played beside Llewellyn...
07:15Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:16..he was outstanding.
07:17And offering a real litmus against, like...
07:21Taking a bit of pressure off Llewellyn.
07:23Yeah, because Llewellyn doesn't feel like he has to do anything.
07:26Because if they make Llewellyn do everything, he'll run out of par.
07:28Yeah.
07:29Galvin's only a kid, too, and he's still learning the game.
07:31I know, that's right.
07:32But I just think those two things are going to work well.
07:35And I do think that they can beat the Dolphins,
07:38who are yet to win and were flogged by the Knights.
07:42But, you know, are they where they're going to be?
07:45I don't know.
07:46No, I just...
07:47But you're on them.
07:48I'm going with the Dolphins.
07:49I'm going with the Dolphins.
07:50But I think that could be a 50-50.
07:51Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:52Well, look, last weekend...
07:55Look, I've given up.
07:56I'm trying to sound like I know what I'm talking about.
07:58No.
07:59But the reality is...
08:00We don't know.
08:01You don't.
08:02We don't know.
08:03No-one knows.
08:04Anyway, the last of the Saturday games,
08:05the Titans up against the Knights.
08:06We've been talking about the Knights.
08:07Ponga is red hot.
08:08He is on fire, which is dangerous for anyone playing the Knights,
08:12particularly for the Titans, who were just dreadful against them.
08:16Well, it's their first home game, too.
08:17Yeah.
08:18So hopefully they play a bit better.
08:19I know.
08:20I know.
08:21But, mate, how can you...
08:22Oh, I don't understand it.
08:23Yeah.
08:24And Desi Hasler.
08:25Yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:26How can you play...
08:27This will tell you what I don't know about Desi Hasler.
08:30I think to myself about the way I saw him play
08:33and what he used to do and all the rest of it.
08:35And I think, well, if I'm getting coached by him,
08:37I'm going to have a red hot go.
08:38Yeah.
08:39And it just doesn't look like they do.
08:40Yeah.
08:41I don't know.
08:42He's a different character, Des.
08:44Oh.
08:45Yeah, yeah.
08:46No, no, he's...
08:47Oh.
08:48I played against him.
08:49Yeah.
08:50But that wasn't a wrap.
08:51Yeah, well...
08:52Okay, he's a different character.
08:53I got six weeks.
08:54Yeah, okay.
08:55Hitting him on the cheek.
08:56Yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:57No, see, this is what this always comes back to.
08:58No, no.
08:59Because you're a thug.
09:00No.
09:01You were a thug when you played.
09:02You're a thug now.
09:03You're kidding.
09:04You're kidding me.
09:05St. Trevor.
09:06Right-o.
09:07Let's get through to the Sunday games.
09:08We've got the Eels up against the Dogs.
09:09Of course, the Eels were just awful,
09:11as we've just spoken about, against the Tigers.
09:13This is at Parramatta.
09:15And they're playing the Bulldogs,
09:16who obviously put the Titans to the sword.
09:18Yeah.
09:19I've gone with Parramatta for one reason.
09:21You can't continue to be that bad.
09:23Nah.
09:24Surely.
09:25I understand.
09:26And I'm just hoping that at home,
09:27three o'clock on a Sunday, that's footy time.
09:28Yeah.
09:29Surely.
09:30And...
09:31Riles.
09:32Jason Riles.
09:33Yeah.
09:34Like, I've roomed with him in an Australian side for a couple of years.
09:36Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:37He is one of the most disciplined, straight-up-and-down men.
09:40Yeah, yeah.
09:41If he can't coach, and maybe he can't,
09:43but I feel like he is a bloke who will insist on what we always talk about
09:47in terms of repeatability and resilience
09:49and all of the stuff that makes good defence.
09:52That's what Jason Riles was built on.
09:54Yeah, yeah.
09:55I hope that that's going to shine through,
09:56and this will be the time that it will, I reckon.
09:58But you're on the Dogs.
09:59Yeah, I'm going on the Dogs.
10:00I think they're going pretty good.
10:02I mean, they didn't have to do too much against the Titans on the weekend,
10:07and it was at Belmore, the spiritual home.
10:10So, this is at Parra.
10:12Matty Burton looks like he might be out.
10:14So, he's a huge loss.
10:16Geez, he can kick a ball.
10:18Unbelievable.
10:19But, yeah.
10:20So, yeah.
10:21I nearly went Parramatta myself here, but I'm sticking with the Dogs.
10:25Yeah, which means I'm probably in trouble.
10:26I think so.
10:27Anyway.
10:28The last game of the round, of course, is mainly up against the Raiders.
10:32This is at Brookvale.
10:34Yep.
10:35However, the Raiders are showing some pretty irreducible form at the moment.
10:39We've both gone with them.
10:40Particularly, look, it's a bit of a big call, actually, at Brookvale
10:44when the Eagles are coming off getting smashed, right, by the Warriors.
10:47Yep.
10:48The DCEs and Tommy Turbos of this world will be looking to make amends.
10:52Well, that's if they're playing.
10:54Yeah, right.
10:55You're right.
10:56But we are thinking they're cleared, but who knows.
10:58Yeah, who knows.
10:59Yeah, but, I mean, the Raiders, just their forward pack,
11:03obviously Corey Horsburgh, Josh Papali, give it to the Broncos forwards.
11:09They're much mooted.
11:10Yes, yes.
11:11Can they back it up?
11:12Yeah.
11:13You know what I mean?
11:14Because the manly pack is no slouch.
11:17They're no slouches.
11:18But it's what we keep talking about.
11:20We're talking about here and we talk about it on Insiders and that.
11:23It's the teams who have the discipline and the resilience to repeat.
11:28You've got this thing.
11:29That's it.
11:30They're the ones who are doing the winning.
11:32And the pattern of it has never changed.
11:34And I don't think it's ever going to get old.
11:36The ability to do that is going to be what makes good football teams,
11:38good football teams forever.
11:39But anyway, I'll probably kick away a little bit more.
11:43Well, it's 10-8.
11:44What I'm trying to do this year, the theory I'm going with this year,
11:47is to try and stay in touch.
11:48You came out of the blocks last year, didn't you?
11:50Yeah, I did.
11:51And you fell.
11:52And I feel like I used up my best stuff early.
11:54And you fell.
11:55And you fell on your ass at the end of it.
11:57Of course.
11:58Anyway, once again, that's our thoughts and tips.
12:01I'm not sure I'll be listening to either of them.
12:03But we will see you next week.
12:05Bye.
