00:00It was an interesting appointment because a lot of the time you sort of feel that club management
00:04and international management are completely different things. And I think if you look at
00:09obviously Southgate in the job before, I suppose he excelled in creating that, I don't want to say
00:16family atmosphere because that sounds a bit cheesy, but he was very good at getting the players
00:21together, especially earlier on when we really didn't have the squad to have had the, I suppose,
00:27nearly success that we had when he first came in. But Tuchel's an interesting one. I think as far
00:33as the FA were concerned, I think it was a case of, right, who's the best manager that's available
00:38at the moment that's not in a job? Thomas Tuchel, let's get him in. He's won the Champions League.
00:44And to be honest, though, I think it's a good appointment. I mean, the good thing is obviously
00:49because he did have the job at Chelsea, he's got a good connection to a fair few of the players,
00:55which instantly is a good thing. I think he'll know obviously the Premier League very well,
01:00which is where the majority of the England squad are playing. So I think his knowledge will be
01:05pretty good of English football. Obviously, people have a problem with him not being an
01:09English manager. But look, as far as I can work out, he's a very good manager. He was available
01:17for the England job. So the FA went out and got him. And as far as I'm concerned, that can never
01:21be a bad thing. Yeah, I've got a little time for all the worries about what nationality manager is.
01:26I mean, that Dan broke a long time ago. So I mean, at this point, really, who cares? I just want to
01:30see us win a World Cup. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Mark, what's your thoughts on Tuchel's appointment?
01:36Because he's going to be very different from Gareth Southgate in a lot of ways, isn't he?
01:39Both in terms of tactics and style, because he's tended to be a much more proactive manager.
01:44And in terms of the person he is, because he can be sort of very quite friendly and laid back.
01:48He's not sort of intense 24-7. He can also get frustrated and have that kind of sort of,
01:55I suppose you could say negative energy, if you like. I mean, do you think that will
01:58have an impact after the Southgate era, which, as Dylan said, was quite nicey-nicey?
02:03Well, I think firstly, we should say that I think Southgate was the right England manager at the
02:07right time, because we needed someone to come in and create a culture that was almost a club-style
02:12culture. So he's come in and done that from top to bottom. He's brought through a generation of
02:17players that he worked with, with the under-21s, and came through the system. He also, because of
02:23his personality, guided us through some, and I'm really wary of making this a far bigger conversation,
02:29but through some really difficult social times, and you look at all the things he had to deal
02:33with away from football. So his kind of statesman-like, political-like manner kind of
02:39fit in England at that point. I think maybe his time in charge went on a little bit too long,
02:45and there was a change needed slightly earlier than happened, but he guided us to two
02:51major finals. He had success in that sense. He's brought through all these brilliant players,
02:57and now the platform is there for someone to kick it on. Is Tuchel going to be a long-term
03:01England manager? No. He's been brought in for one reason, as you said earlier. That reason is to win
03:06the World Cup. I'll say no reason why England can't win the World Cup, I think, when you look at the
03:10pool of players we have. It's very un-English-like to be that brash and say we can't do it, we don't
03:16like being that way, we like being reserved, but I think when you look at this generation of players,
03:21the attitude of a Jude Bellingham, I mentioned Lewis Skelly earlier on, the way he's come through,
03:26and shown that confidence to say, you know what, I am this good, and I think that's very,
03:32I don't remember the last time, you know, even the golden generation we speak of,
03:36sort of around the millennium, they were never really like that. They were kind of reserved and
03:39quiet, apart from Beckham, who was obviously everywhere, but the rest of them were quite
03:44reserved. And I look at this group and I think, you know what, I think you believe, and if they
03:48have a manager in charge who can give them the confidence that Tuchel has done with his club
03:53sides, yes, there will be knocks. You're right, he can be negative at times, but I also think he's
03:58very realistic, and that will help this England squad. So I think he's the right man at the right
04:03time as well, but I don't see him being in charge beyond the World Cup, even if they win it.
