00:00So, this happened.
00:02Bro, Bo's got a f***ing missile.
00:05Bro.
00:05Let's get away from that.
00:06It's a charge booster, it's an M1, it's a f***ing bomb.
00:11Yeah, I know. How far do we need to be away from it?
00:14Blast radius, something like that. Don't know what it is, bro.
00:20It's September 15th, 1944.
00:24Over 17,000 US Marines were about to storm the white sandy beaches of Peleliu
00:30to take the island from the Japanese.
00:32The plan?
00:34A swift and decisive victory in just two days.
00:41But what they didn't know was that beneath the white sands and dense jungles
00:45lay a fortress of steel, concrete and one of the worst nightmares the world has ever seen.
00:51What was supposed to be a 48-hour operation
00:54turned into a brutal, months-long nightmare that not many people know about.
01:02But today, the island of Peleliu on the surface looks like this.
01:06A tropical paradise, beautiful people and filled with amazing wildlife.
01:10This is fun, isn't it? I wish the whole world was there now.
01:15Actually, f***ing is.
01:17Disclaimer though, this island isn't a tourist destination
01:20nor is it probably even safe for two random dudes to be strolling about on
01:24due to the fact it's still a graveyard for undetonated bombs,
01:28unused ammunition and remains of human body parts.
01:32Bro, that's a f***ing missile.
01:34Bro.
01:35Erm.
01:36Bro.
01:37Let's get away from that.
01:38Bro.
01:39That's an actual f***ing missile that we've just found.
01:41This island is a war site, frozen in time.
01:44But in this video, I'm going to take the risk of doing my absolute best
01:48to do this island and its dark story justice.
01:51And to do that, I had to travel over 30 hours
01:53to get to this remote piece of paradise in the middle of the Pacific.
01:57And in return, I get to showcase to you
01:59one of the most groundbreaking and stomach-turning stories from World War II.
02:05This is the airstrip.
02:08This is the airstrip.
02:10I landed on your soil.
02:15I said to the people of the Philippines since I came,
02:23I shall return.
02:24This was a promise made by Douglas MacArthur
02:27that shaped the course of World War II.
02:29In the early days of the Pacific War,
02:31the Philippines, a US territory,
02:33fell to the Japanese forces,
02:35making a humiliating defeat to the Americans.
02:38As MacArthur was forced to retreat to Australia,
02:40he left with a vow that resonated across the war-torn world.
02:45I shall return.
02:47To the Filipino people, it was a promise of liberation.
02:50To the Japanese, though, it was a declaration of war.
03:05This is where Peleliu, a seemingly insignificant island,
03:08became a critical stepping stone.
03:10Because to liberate the Philippines,
03:12Douglas MacArthur needed control of the skies.
03:14And this airstrip would provide him just that.
03:17You see, this exact airstrip I'm stood on
03:19was the key for holding down this island.
03:22This is massive, bro.
03:25This is what they would have used to land all the aircraft.
03:28You claim this, you've got the island.
03:32And that's why the Japanese were so defensive over this land
03:35because they knew if Americans could land their planes on this,
03:38it was over.
03:39They could get so many more people in from the sky.
03:42Because the beach, obviously,
03:44was not working too well for the US
03:46because the Japanese had all the bunkers,
03:48taking all the Americans out.
03:49Next best thing would be to land planes on here, yeah?
03:52Get your men in through aircrafts and stuff.
03:54In simple terms, if you have this airstrip,
03:57you have the island.
03:58But getting hold of that airstrip
04:00was a nightmare the US soldiers would face for over two months.
04:04Plan of action.
04:05First proper day in Palau.
04:07Well, Peleliu, actually.
04:08Me and Jack are going to meet a guide
04:10who's going to show us around the island
04:12because me and Jack are going to need, like,
04:14a bit of understanding of where things are dotted about
04:16because the war basically happened all over the place.
04:19So, the guide is going to show us where to look and where to go.
04:24And, yeah, hopefully we get to see some crazy s*** today.
04:28How you doing?
04:30Good, good, good, good.
04:31Yeah, really good, really good, man.
04:33We're excited.
04:34This is Kobe, and he knows his place inside out.
04:37So, he'll be showing us all the remains
04:39still standing to this day from World War II.
04:41And this is what's going to give us the glimpse
04:43into the dark history of Peleliu Island.
04:46The first thing that Kobe wanted to do
04:48was show us how beautiful this island really was.
04:51Yeah, I'm kind of shocked, you know,
04:52just getting in this water, like,
04:53yo, what's in there?
04:55What's in there, then?
04:57We swam with sharks, did some spearfishing,
05:00and overall just absorbed the sun
05:02and how beautiful this island really was
05:04until we saw our very first glimpse
05:06of the catastrophe that took place in 1944.
05:12This was a Mitsubishi A6M Zero,
05:16one of the most fascinating fighter planes
05:18that the Japanese made for their soldiers.
05:20At the start of the war,
05:21the Zero was unmatched in dogfights
05:24because of its lightweight design.
05:25It could outmaneuver almost any aircraft.
05:28But as Japan began to lose their air superiority,
05:31many Zeros were converted to kamikaze missions,
05:34crash diving into American ships
05:36in a desperate attempt to turn the tide of the war.
05:38And that's exactly what this rusty old aircraft is,
05:41a kamikaze attempt to take out an American warship.
05:49This was one of many things I saw that really hit deep,
05:52and it made me realize how real World War II actually was.
05:55Before this trip, it was just a history class in school,
05:58and it all seemed like one giant story
06:00or some fiction out of a book.
06:01But that changed as soon as I was able
06:03to actually lay my hands on leftover equipment.
06:06Everything became real.
06:08Bro, look at that.
06:09Brass bullet holes.
06:16That's f***ed.
06:17This kind of feels really weird right now.
06:23A bullet went straight through that, and you killed him.
06:26And not even one bullet, bro.
06:28That's brutal.
06:30That helmet made me feel weird.
06:32That was like, it's real, man.
06:37That was the closest thing I've seen to, like,
06:40an artefact that, like, I don't know,
06:42represented death, you know what I mean?
06:45Jesus.
06:46This is Bloody Nose Ridge,
06:48one of the most brutal battlefields known to mankind.
06:52This is where the Colonel, Kuno Nakagawa,
06:55the mastermind behind Japan's defence of Peleliu,
06:58resided during the battle in a series of tunnels,
07:00caves, and hidden bunkers.
07:02And the only way for the Americans to win the battle
07:04was to take out the Colonel.
07:06But attempting to do so,
07:07they found themselves in a living nightmare.
07:09And the helmet I picked up here
07:11was a result of one of these soldiers
07:13fighting for their country.
07:20Right, so I'm looking out right now to, like, the beach.
07:24And being a Japanese soldier stood here right now,
07:27you would have basically been looking out to the ocean, right,
07:30and seeing fleets upon fleets of vehicles in the water,
07:35like ships, tanks, soldiers coming off them,
07:39aircrafts, pilots, oh, my God.
07:42That would have been terrifying, actually terrifying.
07:46So did the US Marines make it up here?
07:48Yeah.
07:49They made it up?
07:50Yeah, they had to finish the job.
07:51Yeah.
07:52And take it, there was just Japanese up here.
07:55Oh, yeah.
07:56A lot.
07:57The next day, me and Jack woke up early
07:59to see some of the most brutal parts of the island,
08:02which started off with a bunch of dogs trying to attack me.
08:05All right, guys, it's like 5 a.m. in the morning.
08:07The shop opens in a little bit, and me and Jack need water.
08:11He texts me, he's like, I feel like a desert.
08:15Why is there so many chickens here?
08:17There's just dogs everywhere on this island.
08:21Walk, walk, walk.
08:29What's up, Jimmy, what's up?
08:31Walk, walk.
08:35It is like real life zombies, bro! It's the dogs round 7, the dogs rapping and shit.
08:57I'm just trying to have my morning coffee.
09:08M3.
09:09Now, time for the part of the video where I show you what that preview was at the very
09:17beginning of this video.
09:19Things took a very real turn.
09:20Me and Jack decided to spend an hour away from filming to enjoy the sea and absorbing
09:25the paradise of Peleliu Island until a heavy metal object found itself next to Jack in
09:30the water.
09:31What you're about to see is very real and we probably shouldn't even be alive.
09:36What have you just found?
09:39I don't know.
09:40Bro, it looks like a gun.
09:41Like a gun or some kind of...
09:42You know those mortars we saw?
09:43I'd be careful, you know.
09:44If that's undetonated.
09:45Bro, it's heavy.
09:46Yeah, bro, that is actually...
09:47Part of a gun or part of a ship or something.
10:00It's funny because watching this back now, I know exactly what that is and no, it's not
10:04part of a ship or a gun.
10:07That thing is a bomb.
10:11Bro, that must have just washed up.
10:14Do you reckon?
10:15Well, surely.
10:17But didn't you find it in the sand?
10:19Nah, it was just like on top of the sand.
10:23The tide's just come in.
10:25Set the tripod up further away, bro.
10:27Yeah, true.
10:28Because if that goes off, yeah, we're...
10:30It's the date of the call.
10:32Bro.
10:34Bro, that's a f***ing missile.
10:36Bro.
10:37Erm.
10:38Bro.
10:39Let's get away from that.
10:41Bro, that's an actual f***ing missile that we've just found.
10:44No, not found.
10:45You threw it.
10:46I want to get all the other shavings off.
10:49All of this.
10:50Should we just keep throwing it?
10:52I mean, you've thrown it once now, so it's not going to explode.
10:57Just be careful.
10:58If you're going to throw it, yeah, try and get it far.
11:00Yeah.
11:02Probably the dumbest thing I've ever said in my life.
11:05Are you going to do this all?
11:07I know.
11:11Throw it face down like that.
11:14Oh my god, bro.
11:15What?
11:251942.
11:26Oh my god.
11:27What have you...
11:28What have you...
11:29What have you f***ing done?
11:30Bro.
11:31Bro.
11:32It's a charge, bro.
11:33It's an M1.
11:34It's a f***ing bomb.
11:39Bro.
11:41Me and Jack didn't realize the severity of this situation at all because after doing
11:44some digging online, I identified the bomb as an 81 millimeter mortar round, specifically
11:50designed to destroy Japanese bunkers.
11:53This 81 millimeter mortar round has a blast radius of 23 meters and would have killed
11:58us instantly.
11:59This has got this code on it, block 4233016, and it's a charge burster M1.
12:09Now, it's from August 1942 this was made.
12:14And this fell out of that...
12:19I don't know why you put that near me, man.
12:21This could be dangerous as well.
12:23Yeah.
12:24What if that's an explosive?
12:26I know.
12:31Yes.
12:35Be careful.
12:36If that blows up, you're dead.
12:39Well, at least you got it on camera.
12:46Bro, my dad's gonna lose his s*** when he watches this part of the video.
12:56It started smoking.
12:57No, it f***ing didn't.
13:00Jack, get back.
13:01Get back.
13:03It started smoking and hissing.
13:05I promise.
13:06I actually promise.
13:08Just remove that camera in a sec.
13:12Yeah, it started smoking but it's hissing.
13:14As I was running away.
13:16Bro, look at it.
13:17It's smoking, it's smoking.
13:19It's on fire.
13:21It's on fire.
13:25Bro, I think that's gonna blow up.
13:29Yeah, I know.
13:32That was f***ing live, man.
13:33No, I know.
13:34That's gonna blow up, bro.
13:35Yeah, I know.
13:36How far do we need to be away from it?
13:38That's radiating.
13:39Something like that.
13:40I don't know what it is, bro.
13:41You know what I mean?
13:42Cracking and that.
13:43The camera's gonna go if that goes, bro.
13:46You can't risk your life for the camera, though.
13:48No, no, no.
13:49Hold that.
13:50Let me get the camera.
14:01There's a bit of snap crackling and popping.
14:06Bro, it's popping.
14:07Right, we need to call the people.
14:08We haven't got the signal.
14:09We can't hear anything.
14:10We need to...
14:11Right, we need to report it, though.
14:12When we get back, we need to report it.
14:14Yeah.
14:15We need to report it and just say, like, we found something, yeah?
14:17We didn't know what was going on.
14:19We started messing with it.
14:21I don't know if we can...
14:32Luckily, we found some US Marines on the island
14:35and notified them about the bomb,
14:36and it was really convenient
14:37because they actually had a bomb defusal team on site
14:40so they were able to deal with the bomb properly.
14:43The next day, we met back up with Kobe
14:45to explore some of the unusual sights
14:47the island had to offer.
14:48There is a Sherman tank deep in the jungle
14:50that's laying on its side.
14:52Why is it laying there?
14:53Does it get blown?
14:54Yeah, so it ran over a landmine.
14:58Oh, my God, look at the tank.
15:01That landmine to lift a tank of that weight
15:03must be powerful, man.
15:05This is inside.
15:06There's a steering wheel right there.
15:08Well, it's insane to me
15:09that something that big is in the middle of a forest.
15:11There were five men on board of this tank
15:13when they struck a landmine.
15:15None of them made it,
15:16which means they died in this exact spot
15:18I'm standing in right now.
15:20So, this was the landing zone here?
15:21Yes.
15:22So, this is where they would come in
15:23on the boats and get off
15:24and just storm through here?
15:26And this is a landing zone
15:28And this is a landing zone
15:30where 1,300 American troops
15:32all died in a single day.
15:34I'm trying to, like, picture everything.
15:37That's, like, all you can do.
15:40And it's insane as well
15:41because the amount of, like,
15:43archive footage that we've watched.
15:45I bet we've seen
15:47footage of, like, what happened
15:49like right there in the water.
15:51What?
15:52Is this one of the bunkers?
15:53This is one of the bunkers.
15:54Waiting for them to come through on the beach
15:57and just shooting right at them.
15:58And you've got, like, 27mm.
16:00Yeah.
16:01Some of them even do
16:02looking out towards the beach.
16:03It is so humid.
16:05I don't know how they did this.
16:06Running around
16:08with heavy equipment on you.
16:12Many people died inside of these bunkers
16:14due to the Americans throwing grenades into them
16:16and blowing them out with flamethrowers
16:18which means there's a high chance
16:20of human remains still inside.
16:21And Colby actually warned us
16:23about this earlier that day.
16:24To this day, there's even Japanese
16:26I'm in great relationship with Japan right now
16:28that there is a group of Japanese
16:30that would come to Palau and collect bones.
16:32They're kind of called a bone collector.
16:34Every year they come and collect bones
16:36and they're looking for mass graves.
16:37This is pretty convenient
16:38because three days prior
16:40Jack told me this.
16:41There is something in the bag
16:42that I didn't tell you we brought.
16:43What do you mean?
16:45It's going to help us find stuff on the island.
16:47I just thought I'd chuck it in.
16:49A compass, bro?
16:51Nah.
16:52That black pole there.
16:53Did you bring a fucking metal detector?
16:56Oh my god!
16:58Do you know we're actually going to be able to find bullets?
17:00100%

18:24The next day, armed with a metal detector
18:26I returned to the bunker to search for anything
18:28to indicate the carnage that took place here.
18:30Oh!
18:32I found a f***ing bullet!
18:34Bro! I found a bullet!
18:36Oh my god.
18:38Right, it's got a code on it that says
18:40D-E-N
18:4242.
18:43I don't know if that is
18:45American or Japanese.
18:47Have you just found another one?
18:49Oh! That's a smaller one, bro!
18:51We carried on digging for a few more minutes
18:53until I came across something
18:55really disturbing.
18:57What the f***?
18:59Bro, that's someone's teeth!
19:01That's a jaw!
19:03Bro, that's a f***ing jaw!
19:05Look at it like that, you can see the skull
19:07forming around it.
19:09I don't want to show human remains in this video
19:11as it'll probably get taken down
19:13but we dug for hours and hours
19:15finding countless bullets and fragments
19:17of bones.
19:19Bullets, bombs and bones
19:21isn't the only reason I'm here.
19:27This island
19:29holds something very special to me
19:31and I think some of you too.
19:33In Call of Duty World at War, released in
19:352008, the game mode
19:37Nazi Zombies featured for the very first time
19:39being a piece of bonus content
19:41that you get for completing the campaign.
19:43The first ever zombies map they introduced
19:45Nacht der Untoten, which is Night of the Living Dead
19:47in German. You're trapped in a bunker
19:49holding off hordes of zombies, finding new
19:51guns and barricading windows
19:53to survive for as many rounds as you could.
19:55Well, ladies and gentlemen
19:57Nacht der Untoten is actually
19:59based off one of the bunkers that the Japanese
20:01built to defend this island from the US
20:03and it still stood there to this day.
20:05So to say my inner child
20:07is nerding the f*** out right now
20:09is an understatement.
20:11There's like my whole childhood
20:13just playing this game.
20:15It's a little different obviously, they like
20:17optimised it for the game. These stairs here
20:19obviously in the game
20:21are the kind of like the spiral
20:23stairs that go like that. Right here
20:25you can pick off like dirt off the wall
20:27is it the M1A1
20:29carbine off the wall there yeah and then over there
20:31is the Kar98k.
20:35Oh man, this is wild
20:37you know. You can see how it's
20:39based off it. It's obviously not like
20:41a replica replica. It was optimised
20:43for a game layout and stuff.
20:45It's like an imitation
20:47of it and it's really really
20:49interesting to see in real life.
20:51Bullet holes
20:53bullet holes
20:55bullet holes, bullet holes. So this part
20:57isn't actually in the zombies map like this
20:59part is just like cut off
21:01basically. These are Japanese beer
21:03bottles. There's no branding on it so I can't tell
21:05what's what but that's a classic
21:07whiskey bottle isn't it.
21:09Bullet hole, bullet hole
21:11oh so clearly bullet holes
21:13holy shit
21:15bro
21:17oh my god
21:19ladders going up there
21:21to
21:27that which I guess is a turret spot
21:29looking at the coast
21:31do you know what's mad? We're
21:33so used to just abandon
21:35exploring with TGF. It was like pubs
21:37or haunted places yeah
21:39they were on a fucking war site bro
21:41from 80 years ago. They're still standing
21:43and there's like remains
21:45of bullets and shit. Like look at this
21:47look at that
21:49part of something from
21:51in here man. Looking out of there yeah
21:53is like what the Japanese
21:55soldiers would have been seeing.
21:57Imagining like US Marines come running
21:59through the forest bro and you're just
22:01in here having to shoot them.
22:03Our time in Peleliu was coming to an end
22:05but Colby had a few more spots that he wanted to
22:07show us. This is the original location
22:09that's not been moved
22:11bro imagine the sound yeah
22:13sat there firing that off
22:15into your ears. This is kind of where I would
22:17have been sat like this
22:19operating the machine obviously it's got
22:21no handles on it but given for the complete
22:23building it. And then to tilt it up
22:25and down there's the bearing there
22:27which would have tilted it backwards
22:29and forwards like that. And then by the sounds of it
22:31like there would have been somebody on the
22:33beach where these missiles were
22:35advising these Japanese
22:37guys who were operating this machine to go
22:39oh we need it a bit more to the left
22:41or we need it a bit more to the right or a bit further
22:43We're currently searching for
22:45something called the pillbox
22:47which was a Japanese bunker
22:49which has
22:51so many archived photos I'm lying about
22:53right and we're going to go and see if we can find it
22:55and I just really want to see
22:57it in person because
22:59we've seen so many photos of it I'm lying
23:01and like what happened in there and the story
23:03of what happened with this bunker
23:07I just hope it's still standing
23:09and it looks like it is in the photos because it's
23:11epic
23:13oh
23:15this is one of the Japanese
23:17bunkers yeah they were basically
23:19all in there and I'm pretty sure
23:21they threw
23:23grenades in there and cleared it out or
23:25they fired like mortars into there
23:27oh f**k there's like
23:29holes where they just aim their rifles
23:31you need to see this
23:33so here by the looks of it is where they would be like
23:35aiming out of and shooting
23:37there's obviously a tiny hole for people
23:39to shoot back into here
23:41but you have more of an advantage with a bigger
23:43hole this way shooting outwards but
23:45all it would take yeah is for like
23:47US Marines to walk by with a grenade and throw
23:49it in the hole which I'm pretty sure happened multiple
23:51times mate. This island and all of its history
23:53still stands strong and a huge
23:55reason why is because the local communities
23:57have been preserving this place for years
23:59which is one of the reasons why I decided to
24:01design some limited edition t-shirts
24:03for this video which are on sale at
24:059pm tonight over at jimmy's.store
24:07I'll donate some of the profits to the communities
24:09that look after the island to help keep it
24:11preserved oh and you'll get one of the
24:13sickest tees out of it which holds the
24:15attachment to this insane story
24:17of Peleliu. After a total
24:19of approximately 12,444 men
24:23died during the battle of this island
24:25the US Marines finally made their way
24:27to the top of Bloody Nose Ridge where
24:29they'd find the Colonel Puno Nakagawa
24:31dead in his command post
24:33he refused to die to the hand of the
24:35enemy, Seppuku
24:37this was a form of a ritualistic
24:39self-disembowelment historically
24:41practiced by samurai as a way to
24:43restore honor in the face of defeat
24:45disgrace or capture. The
24:47individual would use a short sword or
24:49dagger to cut open their stomach
24:51symbolizing the release of their spirit
24:53as soon as the Marines found him
24:55the message spread quickly
24:57the battle of Peleliu was over
25:08so this is a memorial
25:10by the looks of it I'm seeing Japanese
25:12writing so it's probably the Japanese
25:14memorial right here
25:16In memory of all those who sacrificed
25:18their lives in the islands and seas of the
25:20West Pacific during World War II
25:22in dedication to world peace
25:46you
