Opening Day is a week from Thursday! #MLB
Wiggy is heated and needs a 2nd lead! Wiggy:" If Devers is not starting at 3rd base, this will be a major issue going forward!" Agree?
Transcript
00:00Biggie this morning, he's been gnawing at the bit asking me if he could have a second lead.
00:05I would love one, if I could get one.
00:08Curtis is gone, Shyam is gone today, so I guess we have the time for a second lead.
00:15All right, so here's what I'll say. The Red Sox open up March 27th in Texas.
00:21A week from Thursday.
00:22A week from Thursday. If Devers is not starting at third base,
00:26this is going to be a major issue moving forward.
00:31Are you basing this on the report over the weekend that he was considering asking for a trade?
00:36Yes, and here's why.
00:40Because what's ultimately going to happen is he wants for some reason to play third base,
00:48or at least be given the opportunity that he can do the job.
00:53If he's not given that opportunity, I think what's going to happen
00:57is eventually he's going to get to the point now that...
01:01Where is he going to go? He can demand a trade. I don't think anybody is going to pay him
01:08$30 million to DH.
01:10But no, no, but they'll pick up the contract. You don't think there's a team out there that
01:13would say, all right, Devers, he's only, what, 28 years old, young bat. He could do a lot of
01:20things when it comes to at the plate. Yeah, he's got some work that he needs to work on at third
01:25base, but we would love to have a guy like this in our lineup.
01:28I'm with you a hundred percent, especially after being at spring training and we got to see,
01:32especially the first day that we were there, we got to see the work he was putting in with a
01:37million different people. You can tell he really wants it. And he believes he can do
01:42third base to the best of his ability. And so I think if he's not the starter there,
01:47you're going to look at a clubhouse that, and I understand they're all adults,
01:50that could end up being a bit split.
01:52Okay. I really want to date Emily Ratajkowski.
01:55You used to, you're fine now.
01:57Yeah, no, I used to want to, it was never happening. So I don't.
02:01Yeah, but him playing third base is a reality because he's done that before.
02:05You know what I mean? If you lived in that world and you dated other celebrities,
02:09okay. It's something that could have been a reality, but he's played third base before
02:14he feels like, and Courtney's right in it. And it was every single day we were down at spring
02:18training. He was working with the fielding coaches on fielding and getting better. And clearly
02:25through his interpreter, he feels like he's a third basement. He's not at the point in his
02:31career where he's, he wants to move where he wants to go to DH. And if there's another team,
02:36which would be willing to get a bat like that, there's plenty of teams out there that would say,
02:40okay, Davis, we'll work with you. Come here. And so eventually he's going to push for the trade.
02:47If he's not able to at least stop there and then see that he is making errors and go, okay,
02:53they gave me my opportunity. I didn't do nothing with it. We played audio from him
02:57on Friday where he said, essentially, I will do whatever these guys want me to do.
03:03Yeah. But that's not what he originally said. Like, it's okay that he can be politically correct
03:07now, but we all know how he feels like he, this has been now a month of people asking him the
03:13question. And I think sometimes you have to take the first thing that they say and not what they
03:17say after maybe being talked to. Right. And, and I think that Courtney is spot on with that when
03:22it's more of like, all right, yeah, I'm going to say it. And I don't think that he's not going to
03:27go out up there and try at the plate or anything like that. I think he's going to still go out there
03:32and hit if he is the DH, but I think eventually it's going to get to the point where he's basically
03:36telling the Red Sox, like, Hey, listen, I want to be moved. I want to be shipped. And now the
03:41Red Sox are going to have to find it. It's just so much better. Like, I don't, I don't disagree
03:47with you. It's not even a question, right? I don't disagree with you, but it's like a quarterback who
03:54is, they see the young guy behind them and they don't want to give up their spot because they
04:00think they could still play and then go and you know what? All right. You need to trade me.
04:07This is Steve from fall river. What's up, Steve? How are you? Uh, I was, I was for trading Rafi
04:15Devers last year because he gets hurt this, that, and third, but as we know, you can't trade him.
04:21It's a lousy contract. So you got the guy here and he has, he's holding the cards because you need
04:2730 million out of them. And he needs to be playing. Now we think falsely that Bregman
04:33is vastly superior to ref to this guy at third base. And he's not, I haven't looked at every
04:39statistic, but there was one ESPN or Fox sports statistic, the field of percentage, uh, Bregman
04:46was only slightly more. In other words, how many chances they had, one guy, one guy led the majors
04:53in errors three of the last four years. Okay. At third base. Okay. But the bottom line,
05:02all right, hang out, hold the phone here. Now relax. Bregman is going to, if Bregman goes to
05:07second base, are you telling me their infield defense, is it going to be better than it was
05:11last year with starry and short stuff? We're not getting a benefit. We're just going to be down and
05:16out having this guy at third. I don't, I don't believe it. We need him engaged more than we need
05:23the extra, uh, few less errors that we may or may not get out of Bregman at third base.
05:32I think he's got all the, he's got all the juice. Unfortunately with his contract and major league
05:39baseball, you have to get this guy engaged. If you've got a humor room, he's not, he may get
05:44hurt and work his way out of third anyway, but to not start him opening day is a big mistake.
05:51Uh, you've already heard some of these other Buttes in the, in the, in the clubhouse running
05:55their mouth for him. You've got a problem. You're not, the benefit you're going to get
06:00for Bregman is not worth the downside. That's I'm a little surprised. Ken, Ken Laird correctly
06:08points out, uh, via text this morning that Bregman turned an unbelievable double play
06:13yesterday. So I, he's the guy, I just don't, you know, you suggesting that
06:21Raphael Devers is going to be upset about it, angry about it all season is a little bit goofy,
06:26but you can say that, but you can say that Bregman is great right now, but Devers can go ahead and
06:32say, well, I've been hurt. And so you guys haven't been able to see with me putting in all the effort
06:36that I have been on the field during spring training, you haven't been able to see what I
06:40can do yet. And the other thing is, is that Greg, you know, that Devers is upset because he talked
06:45about it and you don't just say you there, you, you don't say, Hey, I'm a third baseman.
06:53And that's what I want to play. If you're not upset, if they're trying to move you there,
06:58because if he would have said it from jumping, it'd be like, Oh, I got no, no issues with moving
07:01a D H. Yeah. I mean, he didn't ask for a trade. He said that the what's out there is he considered
07:09asking for a trade, but don't you think I assume that he's getting that out there so that everybody
07:14knows that he's butthurt about it. Right. Right. So he's getting that out there to let the team
07:20know, like, I am upset about this. And if the team decides, okay, on, you know, day one of,
07:28of the regular season, when they open up against Texas, if he's not a third base, he's ultimately
07:34going to say, well, you know, I'm upset. I'm going to go out there and hit, but I want to,
07:41I want to be traded down the road. Opening day for the red Sox is a week and two days away.
07:49He's played Raphael Devers has played in one game in spring training as a DH. So I don't like I,
07:58he should not be expecting to start at third base. I, I, I just, it's, it doesn't make any
08:04sense. This is Jake from Quincy. Jake, what's up? Hey, Greg. Yeah. Listen, I went way too hard
08:16yesterday. Basically turned you on today because you always bring this awesome, beautiful morning
08:24to my day and I'm not feeling your vibe today. Well, wiggies got me worked up about the red
08:31Sox. We were, I wiggy had me worked up about the new England Patriots earlier. I don't know what
08:35the, I will try to, I'll try to, I'll try a vibe. I will. I'm having trouble starting my day and I
08:42need you to be your normal self. Okay. All right. I will try to turn the frown into a smile. And I'm,
08:49I'm not saying like, I'm, I'm, I'm not disappointed with what the Patriots have done so far.
08:55I'm just a little concerned that I'm not getting anything on the offensive side of the ball.
09:00And what there's Devers situation. This is something that we talked about all spring
09:04training long is that you have a kid in Devers that wants to go out there and play a specific
09:11position. It feels like he can. And it feels the issue that I have, but I'm sure feels like he's
09:16earned it to in some way because he's been here for so long and that he's gotten the praise in
09:21years past. Like I, I been the worst third baseman in major league baseball for like seven years,
09:30but he feels like he's getting better. When does he, he feels like he's getting better.
09:35Yeah. So what you also have to take into account these guys egos, like that's an ego blow for him.
09:42So I could see him putting up a stink if they end up going with Bregman from the jump.
09:46Right. And Devers is here until 2033 where Bregman's only here for the next three years.
09:52Yeah. So one guy looks in and goes, right. I'm the face of this franchise. When you think of the,
09:59the Red Sox right now, and we talk about the face of the NBA, but when you think about
10:03the Boston Red Sox, who's the face of this franchise, not just locally, but nationally
10:09it's Devers. So he's probably like, I can get better. I think it's Alex Bregman now.
10:14I would argue that. No, not, I wouldn't say that. You think that nationally people look at and go,
10:21the face of the Red Sox is Alex Bregman. You think they look at it and go, it's, it's,
10:26as you would call them, Ralphie Devers. Yeah. Who's the best player on your team? I think Devers.
10:33He's the best player on your team. He's the best hitter on your team.
10:36You're not the best player on your team. Who was the face when David Ortiz was on the team?
10:41It was David Ortiz. And now when David Ortiz talks about the current Red Sox with Alex Bregman on the
10:46team, he says that Ralphie Devers is the face that he is the David Ortiz of this team. You don't go,
10:51you don't look at, you don't look at the Yankees and go, Oh, Aaron judge is the face of the team
10:56because he plays right field. No, you look in baseball. The face of the team is generally the
11:02guy who has the best bat. Yeah. And Devers has a better bat than Bregman and has the best bat
11:09on the team. So he's the face of your team. That's the way you look at it. You don't go,
11:13Oh, Bregman, because he plays third base and he failed the ball better. No,
11:18no one really cares. I mean, we care about you not making a ton of errors, but we care more about
11:23what you do at the plate. Okay. So you expect Alex Cora because Devers is upset. You expect
11:30him to start him at third a week from Thursday. No, what I would do is start him at third and
11:35let him play himself out of the position. So then when I made the move, there's nothing
11:40Devers could say, right? I'd say, Hey, listen, I gave you the opportunity, but you played yourself
11:45out of the position.
