00:00These juicy nugs are the favorite food of an incredibly intelligent crow,
00:04but they're being defended by this bird cage.
00:07Because if she wants to gain access to the nugs,
00:09she'll need to first solve the nine increasingly difficult puzzles I designed to protect them.
00:14This crow escape room gauntlet is extremely challenging.
00:18So challenging, in fact, for comparison,
00:20I had some young humans also attempt to solve the exact same puzzles with fascinating results.
00:25But just like with my backyard squirrels, I will admit that in hindsight,
00:29I completely underestimated my adversary.
00:31Now, juicy nugs might seem like an odd choice,
00:34but if you look closely, you can spot the exact moment my personal vendetta against the crows started about a year ago.
00:41Did you catch it? I'll play it back.
00:42But this time, watch right here.
00:49The crows had figured out I door-dash food to my porch on an embarrassingly regular basis.
00:54So when a car rolled up to my house and a person got out,
00:58it meant dinner was served.
01:01And this continued on for nearly every delivery,
01:05until it all came to a head one day,
01:07when they once again decided to go for my nugs.
01:19But this time, instead of giving up like a quitter,
01:21I reordered my food, because I was really angry and hungry.
01:24And this is when I realized I was in over my head,
01:27because I was no longer just having my food stolen by a crow,
01:30I was being bullied by a crow,
01:32as he just knocks over my drink and flies off.
01:37In fact, I'm no crow translator, but if you play that back at double speed,
01:42that's a bully's laugh if I've ever heard it.
01:46And the true irony here is of the 8 billion people on the planet,
01:50mine was quite possibly the worst porch for them to be stealing from,
01:54because I spent the better part of 7 years seeking revenge on a different species
01:58that was stealing from my porch.
02:01In the form of fake packages, fine glitter, and copious amounts of fart spray.
02:16And so at this point, I needed answers.
02:19I wanted to know if I was really being targeted here.
02:21Like, actually, how smart is a crow?
02:24And after even a minimal amount of research, it turns out really, really smart.
02:28From playing an instrument,
02:34to understanding and manipulating human objects,
02:39to straight-up psychological warfare,
02:41where you see this crow here wants some water,
02:43but the big bad vulture is currently being a water hog.
02:46So he sneaks up behind him and plucks out a feather,
02:48literally framing the poor other vulture, who gets chased off,
02:52as this genius instigator gets what he wants.
02:55So to fully test the theory I was deliberately being picked on by all my neighborhood crows,
02:59I found a crow named Cheryl at a bird rescue sanctuary
03:02to represent their species as I tested the limits of their intelligence.
03:06And like any good scientist would,
03:07we started off with the first step of the scientific method,
03:10by just observing her with some cameras we placed in her enclosure.
03:13It was really interesting to see how her curiosity
03:16would drive her to figure out clever ways to interact with the objects in her environment,
03:20occasionally motivated by a strategically placed tree.
03:23It became clear she had a few favorite objects she loved to play with,
03:26like this wooden ball,
03:27as she demonstrated a surprisingly deep understanding of cause and effect.
03:32So after a couple months of observation and study,
03:34a plan had now formed to test their species with a 9-part escape room gauntlet,
03:38which meant the only thing left at this point
03:39was to put that plan into action with a 10-second build montage.
03:47Hey!
03:50Here are the basic elements.
03:52For starters, I've placed her favorite combo meal right here on this table.
03:56From sad experience, I know when she enters this room,
03:59the first thing she'll be drawn to are the juicy nugs.
04:01But it will be impossible for her to access them
04:04because of this reverse birdcage that's meant to keep birds out.
04:08And the only way for this birdcage to autonomously unprotect the nugs
04:12is if she solves all nine of our puzzles,
04:14starting first right here on this desk.
04:17Because this is where Cheryl will find a graduated cylinder
04:20with her favorite wooden ball
04:22that's too far down for her to reach directly with her beak.
04:24So here's a question.
04:25If you're a crow, how would you solve this puzzle
04:28given all the materials you have at your disposal here on the table?
04:31Well, if you said you would take the heavy rocks
04:34and you would add them one at a time to raise the water level,
04:37you'd be right.
04:38So Cheryl will have to come to the same conclusion
04:40in addition to not using any of the other decoy materials
04:43like the cork or the cotton balls
04:45that would just float uselessly on the surface.
04:47Once she has enough rocks to get the ball,
04:49the water level will now be high enough
04:50to complete the electrical circuit
04:51with these two pieces of copper tape.
04:53That then sends a signal to an arduino
04:55this puzzle has been sufficiently solved.
04:57And after a few seconds time delay,
04:58a light automatically turns on,
05:00leading her to the next puzzle,
05:02a.k.a. the scales of justice.
05:04After seeing videos like this
05:05where the crows are interacting with human-made objects and tools,
05:09in this case, to get water,
05:10we present her with a scale
05:12to see if she can figure out how to use it.
05:14Once again, there are objects on the table to choose from,
05:17and if she adds enough of them to one side,
05:19it will tip the scales,
05:20triggering this limit switch here,
05:22indicating the puzzle is solved,
05:23which will activate the lights on the Scooby-Doo portrait roulette.
05:27The goal for this puzzle
05:27is to assess their facial recognition capabilities
05:30because I remember seeing a study
05:31where researchers captured and tagged a set of crows
05:34wearing a specific mask
05:35and then later released them.
05:36So after that, the crows would dive-bomb and attack
05:39anyone wearing that mask.
05:41But even more interestingly,
05:42they were still doing it a decade later,
05:45meaning if a crow doesn't like you for some reason,
05:47they will remember your face
05:48and pass that vendetta on for generations.
05:51In our case, we left a picture of me in Cheryl's home enclosure,
05:55and every time she pulled on the leather strap
05:56underneath the picture of my face,
05:58she would get a treat.
05:59So to see if she remembers my face,
06:01even in different clothes,
06:02we'll rotate through these portraits
06:04that include decoys like Kevin the Backyard Scientist
06:07and some guy who made a cameo in my Lemon Battery video.
06:09Oh. Delicious.
06:10Wow.
06:10Refreshing.
06:12Organic.
06:13Not worth 10 hours.
06:15Amazing.
06:1612 hours.
06:16Totally worth it.
06:17And if she pulls on the leather strap
06:19and rings the bell associated with my face,
06:21the piezoelectric sensor on the back
06:23will sense the vibration
06:24and somebody will flutter down from the ceiling,
06:26at which point we once again rotate the Scooby-Doo portraits.
06:29Then once she's correctly picked me three times in a row,
06:32she can move on to the next puzzle
06:33called the Cash Grab.
06:35The idea here was to mimic the videos
06:36where people train crows to go out
06:38and retrieve money they find lying around
06:40and then exchange it for a treat.
06:41In our case, all the dollar bills have NFC chips on them
06:44and the money collection box has an NFC reader near the opening.
06:48So if the reader registers all three dollar bills have been added,
06:51it tells that to a microcontroller that activates a servomotor
06:53that opens this door,
06:54revealing a tool.
06:55Now I'm off chance she even makes it this far.
06:59Cheryl has to grab that tool
07:00and bring it to the next puzzle,
07:02a.k.a. the Fishing Hole.
07:04The inspiration for this puzzle was from this fascinating video I saw
07:06where a crow took a piece of bread
07:08that would have been a fine meal on its own,
07:10but instead it used the bread as bait to lure a fish
07:12to upgrade to a much better meal.
07:14And then in another video,
07:16I saw a crow use a stick as a tool
07:18to remove a tasty worm out of a hole.
07:21So here, Cheryl will first need to figure out
07:23how to bend the end part of this tool into a hook shape,
07:26after which she has to stick it in here
07:28and fish out the cup.
07:29Now the whole container system here is supported by a strain gauge
07:32continuously measuring the weight of the system,
07:34so when it registers it's lighter by exactly one cup,
07:37the next puzzle lights up.
07:39And this was a pretty straightforward cup stack challenge,
07:41and it's something we saw a lot of examples of online,
07:45including with Cheryl herself in her free play.
07:47The engineering here is pretty clever though,
07:49with an inner and outer copper ring in each cup,
07:51so as they stack up,
07:52the electrical circuit gets closer and closer to being completed.
07:56And when she has the final cup she retrieved from the Fishing Hole,
07:59it completes the circuit,
08:00lighting up an old classic throwback from the Squirrel Obstacle Course,
08:03you guessed it,
08:04the Tourist Trap.
08:05This is sort of designed as a reprieve
08:07and a little bit of a fun break for the final two puzzles.
08:09And lest you think crows don't like to have fun,
08:12I'll direct your attention to this crow
08:14repeatedly sledding down this roof,
08:16and this crow and his buddy
08:17swinging from this branch like Tarzan.
08:20Here of course, when she sticks her head through the hole,
08:22allowing us to take her adorable picture,
08:23she's rewarded with an appetizer portion of a juicy nug
08:27to wet her palate and give her the strength to go the distance,
08:30which she'll need to face the penultimate challenge,
08:32a.k.a. the Shipwreck.
08:34The idea behind this puzzle came from seeing crows
08:36coordinate their beaks and feet sort of like this.
08:39So Cheryl has to pull the cork off
08:41and then continue pulling up on the string,
08:43pinning it under her foot the whole time
08:45until she's pulled enough of the string
08:47for the ship to teeter backwards,
08:48triggering this tilt switch,
08:50sending the signal to activate the final challenge,
08:53the Egg Drop.
08:54The concept here came from probably the most incredible example
08:57of crow intelligence in the wild
08:58that I stumbled upon in my research,
09:00where in order to crack open an impossibly hard walnut,
09:03they would first drop the walnut into the street
09:06directly above the crosswalk.
09:07Then cars would drive by cracking the nut,
09:09at which point the crows would wait for the crosswalk to turn,
09:12then safely hop out to collect their delicious reward.
09:15So inside our egg, there's an IR emitter.
09:18But in order to access that,
09:19instead of teaming up with cars in a crosswalk,
09:21Cheryl will need to team up with our buddy Isaac Newton,
09:24harnessing the power of gravitational potential energy
09:27to break it open.
09:28Because if she manages to do that
09:30after somehow solving all the other eight puzzles as well,
09:34well then this IR emitter will trigger this IR sensor
09:37hidden at the base of the table,
09:39which will give the final signal to raise the birdcage,
09:42earning her the right to gorge on her well-deserved combo meal
09:46for as long as she wants
09:48without any fear of me chasing her off my porch.
09:51I should mention, by the way,
09:52this beautiful birdcage was custom-built for me
09:54by my MythBuster buddy Adam Savage,
09:56and he made a really cool build video for it
09:58over on his YouTube channel called Tested
09:59you should totally check out.
10:01So with the maze all set up,
10:02I just needed to lure Cheryl to the study,
10:05and I knew just the trick,
10:06at which point all I had to do was wait.
10:09And I didn't have to wait long.
10:12And I should mention,
10:12while I do have an affinity for testing species
10:15like crows, squirrels, and even octopi,
10:18my favorite species is humans.
10:20So I vetted a few of them out to serve as a control group
10:23before Cheryl made her official attempt.
10:25Okay, to get the juicy nugs,
10:26you gotta solve nine puzzles in this room.
10:28Any questions?
10:29Um...
10:30Go.
10:30And their problem-solving skills kicked in right away.
10:33I see light here.
10:34Yeah, maybe in the doors?
10:36Nothing.
10:37Hold on, wait. Think like a crow.
10:39To achieve the wooden ball,
10:40they started by just trying to utilize
10:42all the various objects on the table.
10:44So we got a cork,
10:45pom-pom balls,
10:46rocks.
10:47And it was really cool to see them
10:48trying a bunch of different things,
10:50totally unafraid of failure.
10:52We need to find one that's long enough
10:53so that it'll push the water in
10:56and then it'll rise up.
10:57While learning a little more with each unsuccessful attempt.
11:00Maybe we put the rocks in and make the water go up?
11:02Oh, yeah!
11:04Until finally...
11:05Use more rocks!
11:06More rocks!
11:07They earned the eureka moment.
11:08I got it.
11:09Yes!
11:09At the second puzzle, they started to recognize some patterns
11:12and pick up some confidence and momentum.
11:14On puzzle three, immediately demonstrating
11:16their own excellent facial recognition skills
11:18with perhaps my favorite line of this whole video.
11:21Hey, I reckon it's Backyard Scientist,
11:24the guy who helped with the lemon guy,
11:27and Mark Robert.
11:28On this one, they couldn't reach the bell,
11:30so they tried a very novel approach
11:32that didn't quite work.
11:33Just barely.
11:34Country is this?
11:35But it inspired a solution that did.
11:38Oh, money!
11:39Sort of.
11:40Oh, no!
11:42How are we supposed to get that?
11:43We're not birds of prey.
11:45And trying different things
11:46and knowing that failure is part of the process
11:48is what it means to think like an engineer.
11:50This is such an important skill to develop for life.
11:53It's written right on the side of every Crunchlabs build box
11:56that gets delivered to your door every month,
11:58where we build a really fun toy together
12:00and learn about the fascinating physics that make them work.
12:03The best part is, just like I try to do with my YouTube videos,
12:05we hide the vegetables,
12:06so you're learning all these useful life skills
12:08like resilience,
12:09but every step of the journey is still really fun.
12:12Ah!
12:13Plus, all Crunchlabs subscribers
12:15now get their actual selfie taken from actual space

12:27by gifting it to someone else,
12:28use the link in the video description
12:29or head to crunchlabs.com,
12:31where we're giving away two free boxes for our holiday special
12:33so you've got something even more fun to open up.
12:36Crunchlabs!
12:37Yeah!
12:40Oh, yeah!
12:42And then some juicy nuts.
12:43We gotta get out before Mark gets here.
12:46Now back to Cheryl.
12:47Just as I suspected,
12:49the irresistible prize inside the birdcage
12:52caught her immediate attention.
12:54I can't blame her for trying the brute force shortcut,
12:57which of course comes up short.
12:58And as she steps back and surveys the situation,
13:01you can tell she knows this isn't gonna be easy.
13:06So she starts out with a lap around the room,
13:08which admittedly was not very informative,
13:11if at which point she remembers she has wings
13:13and starts checking things out from a higher vantage point.
13:18And you can almost see her trying to work things out
13:20as she recognized variations on a few elements
13:23and toys from her enclosure
13:25because we tried to model some of the puzzles after them.
13:28But even still,
13:28ultimately she was left scratching her head
13:31on how to proceed
13:32until we officially kicked things off
13:34by lighting up the first puzzle,
13:36which piqued her interest enough to investigate further
13:38and that's when she noticed her favorite wooden ball.
13:41And just as I'd hoped,
13:43she immediately tried to retrieve it,
13:46but came up just short.
13:48So the question was,
13:49what would she do next?
13:51And this was the first moment I realized
13:53my nugs might be in trouble
13:55because just like the kids,
13:57she surveyed all the items at her disposal on the table,
14:00but unlike the kids,
14:01she settled immediately on the right answer.
14:06And right as I was thinking
14:07she was going to smoke the kids in this competition,
14:10she recalibrated my expectations
14:12with a reminder that anatomically speaking,
14:14she was still in fact working with the brain
14:16the size of a grape
14:18as she dropped the rock into the cork dish.
14:21But then after realizing this wasn't quite right,
14:23she corrected herself by placing the rock
14:25into the empty beaker,
14:26after which to her credit,
14:27she refocused her efforts
14:29and it didn't take much longer to get to this point
14:31where she very cleverly used the bobbing action
14:34from the buoyancy force on the ball
14:35to save herself a few more rock drops.
14:38And with that,
14:38the sensor was tripped
14:39and puzzle number two was illuminated
14:42indicating it was time to move on.
14:44So Cheryl had a setup fairly similar
14:46to the scales of justice in her enclosure at home.
14:49So this was more of an underhanded softball pitch
14:51to allow her to build up some momentum.
14:53But sure enough,
14:54she got right to work,
14:55at which point she immediately quit work
14:57to try and force the balance beam
14:59into the completed position.
15:00But since the limit switch needs a sustained contact
15:03before lighting up the next puzzle,
15:05she ditched that plan
15:06with a return to her more conventional efforts.
15:10And she was surprisingly picky
15:11at which coins she wanted to add to the dish.
15:17So picky, in fact,
15:18that adorably,
15:19she went back to get her favorite wooden ball
15:21to add to the tray.
15:23And look,
15:23not to nitpick
15:24because she was doing great,
15:25but she displayed a fairly rudimentary grasp
15:27on the relative densities
15:29between a wooden ball and a metal coin
15:30as she seemed sort of incredulous
15:32that wouldn't do the trick.
15:34But after one more coin,
15:39and a bit of an assist
15:40that I'm gonna let slide,
15:42limit switch was triggered,
15:43moving us on to puzzle three,
15:45the Scooby-Doo portrait roulette.
15:48And right away,
15:48she seemed to recognize my face
15:50from her enclosure back home
15:51because she immediately started calling a bunch
15:54at my picture.
15:58And once again,
15:58while I don't speak crow,
16:00I'm pretty sure this translates to
16:02you're way more handsome than the lemon guy.
16:04Once she sufficiently expressed her feelings,
16:08she rang the bell under my picture,
16:10triggering the piezoelectric sensor,
16:12sending a dollar bill fluttering down.
16:15Now, we seen her stuff paper to tissue boxes
16:17back in her home enclosure.
16:18So to help nudge her in the right direction,
16:20the lights to the cash grab turn themselves on.
16:29And after a bit of poking around,
16:31she figured out what to do
16:32by putting the money in the box,
16:34at which point,
16:37nothing happened.
16:38And as you can see,
16:39this confuses Cheryl.
16:41And then it frustrates Cheryl
16:43as she tries to find another way in.
16:45We wanted her to ring the bell a total of three times
16:47to prove that picking my face once wasn't a fluke.
16:50So eventually,
16:51when no new lights come on and nothing happens,
16:53she makes her way back to the Scooby-Doo portrait roulette
16:55to troubleshoot things.
17:01Eventually,
17:01she rings the bell under my face once more,
17:04letting the dollar bill flutter by.
17:07And then one final time,
17:08only on this one,
17:10making an incredible dude-perfect-worthy
17:12mid-air grab right at the warning track.
17:14From there,
17:15it was pretty straightforward for her to stash
17:16both of the final bills,
17:28registering a completion of the puzzle
17:30through the NFC reader,
17:31giving her both a jump scare
17:34and the tools she'd need for Puzzle 5,
17:36the fishing pole.
17:37Now, fortunately for Cheryl,
17:38she hops on over to the newly-lit puzzle
17:40without realizing this is a bring-your-own-pole type of situation,
17:44which, once again,
17:49puts her at a dead end.
17:50But at this point,
17:51she seemed to have an understanding
17:52of the cause-and-effect relationship between the puzzles.
17:55So she scoots herself back over to the cash grab,
17:58grabs the tool,
17:59and then makes her way back.
18:01And on her first attempt,
18:02she tries to sort of wedge the cup with the stick,
18:05which clearly wasn't going to work,
18:07which leads to what is quite possibly
18:09one of the coolest things I have ever seen,
18:12as she goes full-on blacksmith mode,
18:15hammering away,
18:16fastening the end of the stick into a hook,
18:19at which point she drops it back in
18:22and successfully retrieves the cup.
18:25This, of course, is registered by the strain gauge,
18:27which communicates to the microcontroller,
18:29paving the way to the cup stack.
18:31And I knew this would likely be one of the easier puzzles for her
18:34since she played with a similar toy a bunch at home.
18:36The trick would be if she could figure out
18:38the final cup in the stack
18:39was the one she caught from the previous puzzle.
18:42And sure enough, without too much difficulty,
18:43she stacks the first cup.
18:45And with just a little more difficulty,
18:48she stacks the second one.
18:50But once again,
18:51when no new lights come on,
18:53she quickly figures out our clever trick
18:55and out-clevers us,
18:58retrieving the top cup
18:59and bringing it back to complete the copper tape circuit,
19:01allowing her to move on to the crowd favorite,
19:03the tourist trap.
19:06Cheryl had earned every bit of a break
19:08by somehow making it this far.
19:10Plus, I figured she could use a little caloric nugget boost
19:13to give her the energy and motivation to finish this out.
19:16And in exchange for all that,
19:18she did not disappoint with this snapshot
19:20worthy of a postcard,
19:22which meant it was on to the penultimate puzzle,
19:24the shipwreck.
19:26And the calorie boost seemed to pay off
19:28because without a whole lot to interact with here,
19:29she pretty quickly figured out
19:31she should just pull out the cork,
19:33showcasing her very skillful beak-claw coordination
19:37in the process.
19:41And as soon as she pulled it out far enough to teeter the ship,
19:43the tilt switch passed on the input signal,
19:45revealing to the room
19:47the final boss.
19:49And of course, I've shown just the highlights here
19:51from all her attempts on the puzzles,
19:53but she'd somehow persevered and made it this far,
19:55which meant if she figured this out,
19:56it would be an absolute clean sweep.
20:01So after sizing up the situation
20:02and considering all the options,
20:05she comes to the correct conclusion
20:06and teams up with gravity,
20:10exposing the IR emitter,
20:12which gives the final signal
20:14it is time for her to enjoy
20:15the greatest meal of her little feathered life.
20:18And to no one's surprise,
20:19after solving all the complex puzzles
20:21in this escape room gauntlet,
20:22it was a pretty simple task
20:24to get right to the nuts.
20:29But before she even finished
20:30her long-coveted, well-earned reward,
20:32she delighted me with one final touching surprise
20:35as she grabbed another nug,
20:37slathered it in a little dippin' sauce,
20:40and then offered it up,
20:42almost as a gesture of mutual respect and goodwill
20:45between our species.
20:46And I suppose in the end,
20:47whether or not my original crows were picking on me
20:49is sort of irrelevant,
20:51because I now know they're smart enough
20:52where you don't really want to find out.
20:54So out of respectable them
20:55and my new friend Cheryl,
20:57whenever I now order food to my door,
20:59I leave a side of juicy nugs as an offering,
21:01which I hope will put me in the good graces of them
21:03and their posterity for years to come
21:05as they pass down tales of my generosity
21:08to their future grandcrows.
21:10Either way, it just feels good to return to my roots,
21:12feeding all the neighborhood birds.
21:15Wait.
21:16Zoom in.
21:17Oh.
21:18Here we go again.
21:20This is Travis.
21:21No loss of words.
21:22And the reason he's at a loss of words
21:24is because his hackback box
21:26happened to contain the Platinum Diploma,
21:28which means college is now free for him
21:30or anyone he wants.
21:33That's awesome.
21:34And the chance to win free college
21:36and to visit the Crunch Labs,
21:37plus the fact that you can get your selfie taken in space,
21:40are just a couple of perks you get automatically
21:42if you sign up for Billbox if you're a kid
21:47or Hackpack if you're a teen or adult.
21:51Nailed it.
21:52And Hackpack especially makes for a great holiday gift
21:54for that person in your life that's really hard to shop for,
21:57because it's basically a really fun robot in a box
21:59that gets shipped to your door where we build it together,
22:01and it meets you at your current level.
22:03So if you've never built or coded anything before,
22:06it will be your first successful step
22:07just towards making cool stuff
22:09like you saw all throughout this video with the crows,
22:11because it works right out of the box
22:13without needing to know any code.
22:14But if you're already a master builder and programmer,
22:17we design it intentionally to be tweaked and modified
22:19so you can get creative using the online coding module
22:22to totally upgrade what it can do
22:24and then show it off and get feedback from the community.
22:27So this year, whether you're a teen or adult
22:29or you're a kid,
22:30if you want to give or receive the gift
22:31of thinking like an engineer
22:33while having a ton of fun at the same time,
22:37just go to Crunchslabs.com
22:39and use the link in the video description
22:40where to say thank you,
22:41we're giving away either one or two free boxes
22:44as a holiday special.
22:45Thanks for watching.
