Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly put aside the diplomatic niceties Friday at a meeting of G7 leaders in Quebec.
Joly shooting back at her U.S. counterpart, Marco Rubio, telling him he can’t just come to Canada and disrespect the entire country by repeating claims that Canada should become another U.S. state.
Rubio defended President Donald Trump’s threats to make Canada the 51st state, calling it an economic “argument” that “stands for itself.”
Touria Izri reports on Rubio’s comments and Canada’s response.

00:00A mere difference of opinion, that's how America's top diplomat described ongoing threats to
00:06violate Canadian sovereignty.
00:09There's a disagreement between the president's position and the position of the Canadian
00:12government.
00:13U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio tried to paint Donald Trump's 51st state talk as
00:19a two-sided debate, an idea Canada calls a non-starter.
00:23What I said to the secretary is Canada's sovereignty is not up to debate, period.
00:31But the message does not appear to be getting through to the Trump administration, which
00:35continues to entertain annexation.
00:39The president has made his argument as to why he thinks Canada would be better off joining
00:42the United States for economic purposes.
00:45Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Jolie says her European counterparts at the G7 summit
00:50initially brushed off Trump's comments.
00:53The reaction of my colleagues coming from Europe was really about this absurd threat
01:01of annexation was really, is that a joke?
01:08The tone seems to be shifting.
01:10Alongside our Canadian friends, we share a sovereign, we share a history.
01:17In Charlevoix, it's the Germans who are most willing to speak up for Canada.
01:22We Germans and Canada are not only partners, we are close friends.
01:29And friends have each other's back.
01:32The foreign ministers have tried to present a united front here, but that's a difficult
01:37task when one G7 member is threatening the very existence of another.
