00:00You've got it.
00:01I know.
00:02We can do this.
00:03Yeah, we can.
00:04And you're going to be in there, right?
00:05Yes.
00:06Great.
00:07You can tell I'm nervous.
00:08Yeah.
00:09It's all right.
00:10One more.
00:11In Nashville, Tennessee, ladies and gentlemen.
00:13Mrs. Davis.
00:14All right.
00:15Come on in here first.
00:16Love you.
00:17All right.
00:18Hey.
00:19How are you?
00:20Welcome.
00:21I am not performing today.
00:22Oh, wow.
00:23Well, you might as well give it a shot.
00:24I mean, you know.
00:26I'm so grateful to be here.
00:28I have a special student of mine, Slater Nally, and he wrote a song for my son that
00:36was killed eight years ago.
00:39Slater had heard the story about my son, and I had written a poem, and the second year
00:45that I taught him, I asked, you know, would you mind looking at the poem?
00:49I'd love to see, you know, what your thoughts are and how you turn a poem into a song.
00:53So he did, and two weeks later, he wrote the song, and that's what he's going to sing
00:58today.
00:59Oh, my gosh.
01:01What's up?
01:02How we doing?
01:03We're good.
01:04Tell us who you are.
01:05I'm Slater Nally.
01:06I'm 17 from Atlanta, Georgia.
01:07Atlanta, Georgia.
01:08Very good.
01:09Well, you have had, like, the coolest introduction ever.
01:10Well, thank you.
01:11She's pretty awesome, too.
01:12It seems like you guys have a very special bond, and that's amazing.
01:13Yes, sir.
01:14Yes, sir.
01:24Thank you, Slater.
01:25Thank you, Slater.
01:28Oh.
01:29Yeah, thanks, Slater.
01:30Uh huh.
01:31Yes, sir.
01:32Yes, sir.
01:33I'm very grateful for her, and I'm glad that I could offer such a small notion, but I'm
01:34glad it's helped so much.
01:35Oh, thank you.
01:36Talk about the song for us.
01:37Yeah.
01:38This song's called Traces of You.
01:39I wrote it for Carter Davis.
01:40That's probably the most deep thing I've ever, 100 percent most deep I've ever written about.
01:43I didn't know Carter before any of this happened, and when Miss Davis told us, I just felt this
01:51presence come into my life essentially and I knew that I needed to do
01:56something. I went home and started working away on little notebook pages
02:01and eventually it turned into a song. I'm sorry.
02:05For Slater to not have known Carter and to write this song is just, it captured
02:15Carter, it captured hope. There's that person that I wish was still in my life.
02:21Just our faith that carries us and it felt like there was light and hope in
02:29the middle of it too. She was happy with how it turned out and yeah I'm just
02:37happy to be able to be here and play it and at least put a little joy in a
02:41dark place.
02:44Let's hear it.
02:57Your life was like a river running home
03:04That crooked smile made people talk, you know
03:11About the boy whose eyes flickered like the light before it goes
03:18Your life was like a river running home
03:24In the dark of night you always found the sun
03:31One look at you and I just come undone
03:38Now you visit me in shadows I can't reach and I can't run
03:45In the dark of night you always found the sun
03:52The moment breaks and you appear
03:59For a second I swear you're standing right here
04:05I'd give anything for love to be enough to make it true
04:12As the memories come resting in the view
04:17Of these traces of you
04:28Somewhere past the sky I can feel you dancing in the air
04:41Every single time I see a bird fly by I'm reminded
04:48It's your answer in my prayers
04:55The moment breaks and you appear
05:02And for a second I swear you're standing right here
05:09I'd give anything for love to be enough to make it true
05:16As the memories come resting in the view
05:21Of these traces of you
05:28Traces of you
05:39Your life was like a river running home
05:46That crooked smile made people talk, you know
05:54You okay over there?
06:03I'm not!
06:05You gonna be okay
06:07I'm not okay
06:09That was amazing
06:14Even though this was about your son
06:18Every single person that hears that can
06:21Fill in that memory with somebody that's in themselves
06:24And I couldn't have imagined you doing that any better
06:28Thank you very much, seriously
06:30That one line
06:32Your life was like a river running home
06:35God, the blues man
06:37That's the one
06:39Very powerful
06:41Thank you very much, it means a lot
06:43You just stick to walking out on stage
06:45And singing with your heart
06:47And the rest will take care of itself
06:50Sometimes we don't have to vote
06:52Luke, will you count it off so we can give it to him correctly?
06:561, 2, 3
06:58You're going to Hollywood
07:00That was amazing
07:02Oh my goodness
07:04I'm so lucky just to be able to sing that song
07:06Obviously meant the world to me
07:08You're going to Hollywood baby
07:10To have this gift
07:12I don't know, it's like
07:15To have this gift
07:17I don't know, it's like a little piece of Carter gets to live on in song
07:19Oh man
