00:00Sweden and war is a documentary series that tells the story of the country of Sweden and the people who lived there during the years 1939-1945, with the war in Europe as a foundation.
00:23The first war in history!
00:29The starting point is that it is 80 years ago, the war in Europe came to an end.
00:35Through appeals, we went out to the SVT and asked people to send in stories, their memories, and we didn't really have an idea of how many would come in.
00:48What we got was overwhelming, we got several thousand emails, stories, short films, photos.
00:58In all this material, an incredible amount of history is hidden.
01:05Some were excited, worried, some took an active part in a kind of resistance.
01:13After the stations they passed, they understood that they were on their way east.
01:20But the train stopped in Vitvatnet, and they had to get off there.
01:27And march from there to Storskien, where the camp was set up.
01:34The Soviet Union attacks Finland, as the Swedish government begins a hunt for Swedish communists.
01:41While people go out and dance and eat at the Grand Hotel, ordinary life still continues.
01:50Young people were developed, met, gave birth to children.
01:56There was still a time for development and reform in Sweden, while the war was raging.
02:05Most of the images from this time are black and white, without sound.
02:11When we use the colouring that we have chosen to do, we awaken the images to a new life, and we get much closer.
02:20And the music adds another layer to this story. It deepens, but it also gives the feeling.
02:27We have worked with the musicians Martin Hedros, Iria Gemayner, and Benny Andersson.
02:39It is a great honour to be able to do these interviews and talk to people in the last moments.
02:52There is a different kind of presence, a nerve, in someone who says,
02:59this happened to me, I saw this, I heard this.
03:03Then tears ran down my father's face. I will never forget that.
03:09It is a story like being human. Who am I? Who are you? Who are we? What is happening between us?
03:17It was a kind of anxiety, and it has remained with me for the rest of my life.
03:25What has struck me so often during this work, is that it is so curiously similar to our time.
