Bien des années avant l'arrivée de Spartacus, à Capoue, la maison dirigée par Batiatus et sa femme Lucretia est l'un des endroits qui forme les meilleurs gladiateurs de la province. Sur le sable de l'arène, le meilleur combattant est Gannicus, qui a un goût prononcé pour les armes, les femmes et le vin. Grâce à lui, Batiatus construit sa réputation politique et sociale dans la cité romaine, au milieu des complots et des luttes de pouvoir.
