00:00Hello everyone, welcome back to my channel. My name is Kristen and today I'm going to be sharing
00:04with you some decorating mistakes that might be making your home look and feel uninviting. Now
00:09creating a warm welcoming home is not just for your guests, it's also for you so that you feel
00:14welcomed by your home, you feel happy in it, it's really a space that you enjoy.
00:18So I'm sharing some decorating tips with you so that you can create that inviting feeling in your
00:22home as well. If you enjoy watching and find this video helpful make sure you give it a big thumbs
00:26up and hit that like button and let's go ahead and jump right into it. Now if your furniture
00:30layout doesn't allow for comfortable conversation you definitely need to change up your furniture
00:35layout. I always believe that your furniture should be somewhat facing each other and really
00:41be in a formation that allows for comfortable conversation and allows for gathering. This is
00:46especially important in family rooms and living rooms because those are spaces that people gather
00:52in most. So make sure that your furniture isn't just facing the fireplace or just facing a tv
00:59because that's really not going to allow for a lot of conversation. If you have one sofa in your home
01:04really facing that focal point add in an accent chair that's facing the sofa. That will allow for
01:10people to sit across from each other and really create this inviting environment. If you don't
01:15have the space for adding in a larger furniture piece like that you can also do this with small
01:20poofs and ottomans. These make for great additional seating. They don't take up much
01:25space. They can be styled really nicely in a home but they also allow for flexible seating to have
01:31conversation. So we keep these all over our home and I do find my guests pulling them out to use
01:36them to engage in conversation. It just creates a very relaxed environment without adding in a ton
01:42of big furniture. So definitely add in some accent chairs or ottomans in any space that you have
01:47just that main sofa or sectional. Your sofa or sectional might be more than enough room to sit
01:53and watch tv but it may not be the best environment to converse and really create an inviting space.
01:58So add those additional pieces in to really create a gathering space in your home. So use your focal
02:04point like your fireplace or your tv as your anchor but then also use a coffee table as that
02:10grounding point to circle your furniture around. If you have an open concept space and you're
02:14considering adding accent chairs, get accent chairs that swivel. That will allow you to use
02:19all the different zones around your space with one single piece and it allows you to create this
02:24open feeling. Sometimes having a chair that can't move directions kind of makes your space feel
02:29small and a little bit stuck. Having that swiveling option really opens up your space and allows for
02:35so much versatility. Now I think everyone would agree dirty towels especially in a powder bathroom
02:41are going to make your home feel uninviting. I highly recommend using decorative napkins in
02:47addition to towels in your powder bathroom to make your space feel inviting. These can be used to dry
02:53your hands, your guests feel like your space is clean and ready for them and it's just that added
02:58touch that goes a long way. I love using these decorative napkins that I found on Amazon. I just
03:03love the pattern of them. They really integrate into the other patterns around our home so it
03:08adds this decorative touch. I've also been using these just to wrap extra toilet paper rolls. I
03:13find that that creates a really inviting bathroom space as well. It makes everything feel fresh and
03:19clean and new and it adds that personal touch into your home. Now I think the one space that
03:23actually matters the most to creating an inviting feeling is your entryway. You really want to set
03:29the tone for your home right when you walk through the door so create that environment
03:34right there and then. If your space is cluttered and there's shoes everywhere and there's bags and
03:40backpacks and coats laying around, mail and keys and all of the things, it is instantly feeling
03:46not so inviting. So I always recommend having as much closed storage as you can in your entryway.
03:53If that's your coat closet, if you have to add an additional wardrobe into your entryway to create
03:57that closed storage, maybe it's baskets with lids or benches that have storage, really create as
04:03many storage opportunities as you can in your entryway to create a clean organized environment.
04:09It's going to really open up your space, it's going to instantly feel inviting and it's definitely
04:13going to set a better tone for the rest of your home. If your entryway is cluttered, it kind of
04:18is assumed that the rest of your house is as well. So really set the tone right when you walk through
04:23the door and create a clean organized environment. I just finished a DIY budget-friendly makeover in
04:28our home and I found that the biggest impact actually came from the rug. I went with a larger
04:34rug size so that when guests come into our house you don't have to stand on a tiny little mat,
04:39you can really walk into our space and feel comfortable. So sometimes going with a larger
04:43rug size will also help create this inviting feeling so you can really enter comfortably.
04:48If you're looking for ways to improve your entryway, I'll leave a few of the entryway
04:52makeover videos I've done down below in the description box so you guys can check those
04:55out as well. They're all different styles, all different layouts, so they'll really help give
04:59you some ideas that you can implement into your home. Now let's talk about what I call a relaxed
05:03clean look. Everyone wants a clean organized home, especially if you're having guests over,
05:09but there is such thing as your home looking and feeling a little bit too clean. Like too clean to
05:13the point where you don't want to sit on anything, you can't touch anything, you don't want to move
05:16anything around because you're going to ruin the pristine look. So I think if you have a home like
05:22that, you need to kind of rustle it up a little bit and add some life into your space. That could
05:27be leaving board games out on a table. That feels very inviting. It feels like you can use the space,
05:33maybe leaving a pair of shoes by the door. Not all of your shoes to create a cluttered look,
05:37but it really shows your guests or anybody coming into your space that they can take their shoes
05:41off and that's where they can leave them. You can kind of rustle your throw blankets up so that
05:45they're not perfectly folded on your couch. It creates this feeling that you can walk in the
05:50space, sit on the couch, and you're not going to ruin the pristine look. So sometimes you actually
05:55have to step it back a bit and create more of a relaxed environment. Your space can definitely
06:00be clean and organized, but it just needs a little bit of life in it. Now I've learned this over time
06:05just by observing. So if you've ever observed your guests kind of hover and not sit on your
06:10furniture right away and don't really know where to put things and they look a little bit
06:13uncomfortable because of how pristine your space looks, that's when you know you kind of need to
06:18create more of a relaxed look so that they can feel relaxed and welcomed in your space. Another
06:22very simple, affordable, functional decor piece that every home needs are coasters. Coasters just
06:29are that cue to anyone in that space that they can put their glass down on this. It just creates this
06:36inviting feeling without saying anything. It feels like, yes, you can have your drink in here, you can
06:40place it down on our coffee table. So it's just that subtle decor piece that really creates an
06:45inviting home. So I make sure to have these in our living room, our family room, sometimes even our
06:50dining room, and my office. Really anywhere that has a surface that you can put a glass down on,
06:56I keep a little set of coasters. So match them to your interior, make it feel a part of your space,
07:01and this will be something that will just add that nice inviting touch to any room around your home.
07:07Another thing to implement, especially in your entryway, is a scent. I always love to have a
07:12large candle ready to be lit in our entryway. If we're expecting guests, if I just want to create a
07:18really warm environment in the evening, it's the perfect place for a candle. Walking into a home
07:23that smells like pets or garbage or anything bad is not too pleasant, so definitely create an
07:28inviting feeling through scent. If you're not someone that likes to have candles in your home,
07:33you can also have room sprays, even little rug powders that clean up your rug, really take the
07:39odors out of them, and it creates this welcoming environment that feels clean and fresh right when
07:45you walk through the door. If you're looking for a good neutral scent that smells warm, inviting,
07:49and a little bit high-end, find a candle or a scent that has amber in it. It smells super warm,
07:56it feels very neutral, it doesn't come off too powerful and overwhelming, so I find amber to be
08:02such a beautiful scent for our home. We mention this all the time on my channel, but if your home
08:07is just using overhead lighting, your space isn't feeling as welcoming and inviting as it could.
08:14Add in lamp lighting. It is so important to creating an inviting, warm, welcoming space,
08:20especially if you're having guests over in the evening. It creates ambiance in your home,
08:24it warms up your home, and it feels so much more comfortable. It's always a bit jarring just having
08:29bright lights overhead, especially in the evening, so add in lamps into your daily routine. I go
08:35around the house in the evening as the sun's setting and turn my lamps on so I can create this
08:41warm glow around my home in the evening. So don't just do this for your guests, do it for yourself
08:45to create that warm, welcoming space. You're gonna love it. I love having at least three lamps in
08:51every single space to help balance the light around the room, and it truly feels bright enough,
08:56welcoming enough, and really warm and cozy. I really noticed this when I stayed in an Airbnb
09:01that didn't have any lamp lighting. Oh my goodness, is it uncomfortable in the evening. I always get
09:07questions about this lamp here, and I thrifted it from Habitat for Humanity for $20. It actually
09:12came with a dark green pleated lampshade that I just swapped out for this nice cream one that
09:18really suits the lamp, and it creates this whole new look on a budget. So it definitely doesn't
09:23have to be expensive to add lamp lighting around your home, you can really get this designer look
09:28on a budget. Now sometimes when a home doesn't have any personal pieces around it, it starts to
09:33feel a little bit lifeless, which starts to feel a little bit uncomfortable, a little bit uninviting,
09:39so adding personal pieces in in tasteful ways makes a huge difference. It adds a ton of life
09:45to your home. This is a really small way of doing it. We keep these wedding books out on our coffee
09:50tables just to add some life into our space. We also love them, I love the way they look, but I
09:56purchased these linen books off of Amazon and inside are our wedding photos. So it's just such
10:03a simple way of adding that personal piece in a super tasteful decorative way. It feels like you
10:09can grab it, you can pick it up, you can look through it, but it also adds to the decor around
10:13the home. I personalized it so it feels very unique to us in our home, and I love the way
10:18these turned out. So creating moments around your home where you can add your personal pieces in in
10:23a tasteful way will create a welcoming environment. If you want to add family photos into your home
10:28in a very tasteful way as well, you can integrate them into gallery walls, you can frame small artwork
10:33and integrate it into your shelf decor like we've done. It just adds some life and some personal
10:38touches into your home. This is going to allow you to get the decorative look that you want
10:42while also personalizing your home and really bringing that life into it. And lastly, use
10:47decorative boxes to your advantage. I actually just picked these up from Home Goods the other
10:52day. I love the look and style of them, but they are perfect storage opportunities for small items.
10:58If you have vitamins and medication and mail and any personal items, you can just easily hide them
11:05away in decorative boxes. They can be put on any surface and no one would have to know what's inside.
11:11So these are perfect for styling your home, for organizing it, for tidying it up in entryways,
11:17kitchens, any high traffic area of your home that collects clutter. Use decorative boxes like this.
11:23You can get them in different patterns and colors to really add to the overall design of your home.
11:27Sometimes seeing all the personal items can create an uncomfortable feeling, so store them away,
11:32hide them behind decorative pieces to create an inviting environment in your home.
11:36Alright, so that's it for today's video. I hope you guys enjoyed watching and I hope this gave
