00:03So for any of you thinking,

00:05wow, what a lovely blank white room.

00:08I can't wait to see what you do with it.

00:09I'm gonna stop you right there

00:11and say you need to see what I've already done with it, okay?

00:15This is how my laundry room looks now,

00:17but this is not how it's always looked.

00:20In the previous episode to this laundry room makeover,

00:23you get to see the real before.

00:25Let me tell you, this room was rough.

00:28It required an entire demolition.

00:30I didn't want to keep a single thing.

00:33So we had to tear it all down and put it back together.

00:35A process which involved me building

00:37this stunning salvaged glass block wall,

00:41bringing in this gorgeous vintage door

00:43and doing all sorts of fun wood paneling on the outside,

00:46and then bringing the inside back to a workable blank zone,

00:50which today we're going to tile.

00:56Welcome back to the series

00:57where I challenge myself to use thrifted materials

00:59and a love of all things retro to DIY our family home

01:02from this farmhouse to that 70s house.

01:08Now, between the last time we talked and now,

01:10I've since given this room a whole coat

01:12of drywall primer and white paint.

01:15We're looking good, feeling fresh,

01:17and we're ready to move on with tackling the floor.

01:20Now, for any of you who have been with me

01:22since my major bathroom renovation saga,

01:26this will be familiar to you.

01:28This is a piece of cork floor tiling

01:30and I thrifted a few boxes of them

01:31originally with the intention to put them in my bathroom.

01:34I decided against that.

01:35You can watch those videos to find out the full story,

01:37but I do think that this is a good room for them instead.

01:41Ever since I brought them home,

01:42I've been obsessed with how beautiful they are.

01:44And also since learning about

01:45all the wonderful benefits of cork,

01:47I've been looking for a space to put them in and I found it.

01:50These floor tiles are a tongue and groove system,

01:52so they should be very easy to install.

01:56They're a floating floor method,

01:57which means they don't get glued or anything.

01:59They just click together and hang out here on the floor.

02:02And I know that sounds so simple,

02:04but I'm really hoping it is that simple.

02:08So in an effort to make it truly as easy as that sounds,

02:11I picked up this floor installation kit

02:13and a rubber mallet, and let's go.

02:16So.

02:35Don't put me in charge of math, ever.

02:47Okay, progress is happening.

02:52We're maybe like 70% done,

02:55but now I need to get this out of my way

02:57so that I can go underneath.

02:59And I don't want to unhook it

03:01because we did have a plumber come by

03:04and put it together properly and fix up some of the pipes.

03:09So I don't want to mess anything up.

03:17Here's the finished floor, and oh my God, it looks so cool.

03:21Yes, I realize those pieces back there

03:23are slightly different in color,

03:24but they will be covered by the time

03:26we're finished with this makeover,

03:27so I'm really not that concerned.

03:29And I just think that this cork,

03:32which actually kind of looks like burl wood,

03:34is such a cool choice that I really,

03:37I haven't seen done a lot, and I'm loving it.

03:40Okay, and I don't know if this is just user error or what,

03:42but I wanted to give you a follow-up

03:44on that floor installation kit

03:46because I used almost none of it.

03:49This tapping block and all these little spacers

03:52were totally useless to me.

03:53Like, these kept falling out of place.

03:54They were not helpful.

03:55This was not enough force

03:57to get these specific tiles together.

03:59The only thing I ended up using was this pull bar

04:02and a regular hammer.

04:03You don't need the rubber mallet

04:05to put all these pieces together.

04:06So I don't know, you can buy this on its own.

04:09That's my recommendation from me to you.

04:11You know what we get to do now,

04:13which is something that I have been wanting to do

04:15for so long, so I can have my hallway back?

04:18I think we can bring the dryer in,

04:20and have the faucet on.

04:22♪ Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah ♪

04:31♪ Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah ♪

04:37Today's a big day

04:37because we're doing a ton of second-hand shopping

04:39for the laundry room.

04:40Just picked up this big stainless steel sink,

04:42which will be great.

04:44And I'm actually headed all the way to Buffalo,

04:47which is on the other side of the border,

04:49to pick up some vintage lighting.

04:52If you remember my closet makeover,

04:53I found these eyeball lights for my closet.

04:56And since then, I just have like a newfound obsession

04:59with track lights, especially vintage track lighting.

05:01So I found someone who's selling six of them

05:04and they're chrome silver for a super good price

05:07just on the other side of the border.

05:08So I'm gonna hop down there, purchase those and come back.

05:11We're doing a whole bunch of pickups, so let's get to it.

05:15I just completed the pickup of the lights.

05:18And do you see these boxes back here?

05:20Like they're still strapped down,

05:22taped up because 90% of them are unopened.

05:27Like these are brand new stuff,

05:28but there was one open so she could show me

05:30what they look like.

05:31And these are so cool.

05:34First of all, can we just appreciate

05:37like the design on the box?

05:40Like this is some font inspo, design inspo I would do now.

05:46Oh, they smell like old basement,

05:48which is a smell that I kind of like.

05:51Look, chrome, black, that's where the giant light bulb goes.

05:56Oh, bird just pooped on my windshield.

06:00This is just literally the installation instructions.

06:02And I kind of want to frame these

06:03because everything about this is so good.

06:08Like, hello, what font did we use for this?

06:10I love her.

06:12Cool, so cool.

06:13Okay, I'm going to have to get the track obviously,

06:15but luckily they still make that.

06:18And this is just the most exciting.

06:20I am so excited.

06:21I probably don't need all six for the laundry room,

06:23but now I have them for all their spaces.

06:29Okay, this was a win.

06:44So my journey yesterday was a huge success.

06:48This is the bit that just gets hardwired

06:50into the box in your ceiling

06:51where you would put any other type of ceiling light.

06:54And then from this, you can extend a track

06:55almost in any direction, which is pretty cool

06:57because this time I want to try and do an L shape.

07:00In my closet, I just did one very simple straight line.

07:04And since that went so well,

07:06we're going to level up this time

07:09and mix in some geometry.

07:11♪♪♪

07:14Hello?

07:16Are you coming?

07:18♪♪♪

07:28So after I perfectly installed this track,

07:30it turns out that the connection on my vintage lights

07:32is the wrong style for the track system

07:34that I just installed.

07:36So after calling some lighting experts,

07:38I didn't get anywhere.

07:39So I'm just going to have to pick this up again

07:41at a later date and hopefully figure out a solution.

07:44Ah!

07:55Come on.

07:56I can't think it's just work.

07:58Okay, I'm going to put a pause on that for a moment

08:00while I figure out a solution.

08:02But in the meantime,

08:03I want to talk to you about an even more important element

08:05that we're adding to the ceiling of this laundry room.

08:07As you can hopefully tell,

08:09doing a renovation project of this scale is a lot of work.

08:12And the best thing that you can do for yourself

08:14when working on a project like this

08:15is to protect your investment.

08:17And what I'm talking about when I say that

08:19is that you don't want to be investing a ton of your time

08:21and money into installing all new drywall,

08:24all new paint, doing beautiful wood details,

08:26only to have it warp and the paint to peel shortly after.

08:29Which can actually happen

08:30when we're talking about these moisture rooms

08:33like your laundry room or your bathroom.

08:34And this brings us to today's sponsor, Panasonic,

09:20So on top of keeping moisture away,

09:21there's so many other things that can be going on

09:23in the air of a laundry room,

09:24like lint or any fumes from whatever bleach

09:27or detergents you might be using,

09:29all of which can affect the air quality of your home.

09:31So the fan is up here and the thing about this fan

09:34is that it uses a DC motor,

09:35which unlike your traditional AC motor,

09:37DC motors use less power to achieve

09:39the same level of performance

09:41which leads to lower hydro bills.

09:44And I love that for all of us.

09:45DC motors also have variable speed control,

09:47meaning they can adjust its speed

09:49based on the ventilation needs of the room

09:51that's avoiding unnecessary energy use

09:53and therefore reducing emissions.

09:55So with the grill removed,

09:56you can access the fan speed selector.

09:59This allows you to easily adjust the airflow of the fan

10:01between 80 and 110 cubic feet per minute.

10:05Okay, so now that we've got the drywall done around the fan

10:07and the ceiling's been painted,

10:08I can finally put the grill on,

10:10which is the finishing touch,

10:12and we can turn it on and see what it sounds like

10:14or hopefully what it doesn't sound like.

10:17And I know if you're watching this video,

10:19it's because you appreciate interior design,

10:21but let us not also forget to appreciate good air quality.

11:39Okay, to make a complicated story very simple,

11:41we were able to just swap out the top connector piece

11:44for the right style that works with this track

11:46and then still be able to keep all like

11:49the fun retro goodness of the shade and everything.

11:52Ah!

11:54Because after that immense journey to go retrieve these,

11:58for me to have the feeling that I could not use them

12:00was gut-wrenching and heartbreaking.

12:03And let's just put that chapter behind us, shall we?

12:07Okay, I don't have all the right light bulbs

12:08with me right now.

12:09So we're just gonna put an assortment

12:11of whatever I have up right now.

12:14But we get to put them up and that's huge.

12:17Okay.

12:21One of these colors is not like the other.

12:25That's okay, I need to get better light bulbs.

12:27Okay, so the plan moving forward for this space

12:29is to do one long countertop that goes along this back wall

12:33and will go over top of the dryer.

12:36A lot of the times when you have front load machines,

12:38the top is just wasted space.

12:41So let's just cover it up

12:42and make this a whole working counter

12:44that we'll put a sink into when we're ready.

12:46I have the counter, I just need to cut it to length

12:48and we'll just drop it in,

12:49but before we do that, it needs something to sit on.

12:51So we're gonna build a frame for back here.

12:53Gonna make the whole thing out of two-by-fours,

12:55make it very simple.

12:56It's okay if it's a bit ugly

12:57because it will get covered with a nice counter

13:00and some nice doors when we're done.

13:01So let's get to work.

13:08All right, is this the right way?

13:17Yeah, but how are we going to do this?

14:11Oh, there's enough left in there.

14:12Shoot.

14:13Perfect.

14:14Perfect measuring job and cutting job all set.

14:25So something I do with a lot of my laundry is I air dry it, and I know they make a lot

14:29of great fold-out air drying racks that you can sort of set up in the middle of the room,

14:35but considering I do this with a good majority of every load of laundry that I do, I kind

14:41of want a permanent solution that's a part of the room that's meant to have things air

14:46dried on.

14:47So my task for today is to build some sort of permanent rack for this.

14:51Now, underneath the new sink that we just put in, there's a ton of storage space, which

14:55is excellent for putting all the stuff under there that I don't really want to see or use

14:59all that often.

15:00But there's a few things that I'm going to need to have out that are easy to access,

15:03like my laundry detergent.

15:05So I'm thinking the design is going to operate kind of like a half shelf, half drying rack

15:11hybrid solution.

15:12Well, maybe more like a one-quarter shelf, three-quarters drying rack solution.

15:17So I'm at the hardware store right now.

15:18I'm going to go in and grab some wooden dowels for the rack part, and we'll figure out the

15:21actual plan back at the office.

15:31Okay, I've come to our studio because honestly, I just want to spread out a little bit more

15:36and be able to build this larger shelf in this space.

15:40And I kind of just needed a bit of a mental visual break from being in that small room

15:47this entire time.

15:49So I have my new supplies, plus some extra wood that I brought from the laundry room

15:54build, and let's get to it.

15:56So this is what I have in mind for the design of the shelf rack.

16:00I'm cutting down some one-by-threes for the frame and also cutting a rectangle out of

16:04some scrap wood for the shelf top.

16:11It's in the description below.

16:13As you can see here, the shelf bit will just be at the one end, and these additional vertical

16:17pieces will act as the supports for the dowel rods.

16:20I'll need to drill holes in these support pieces so the rods can fit through them.

16:25One of them will need to have holes all the way through, as it will be our middle support,

16:29while the other two will be our end caps, and we'll just need holes part of the way

16:32through to hold the dowels in place.

16:34These one-by-threes are getting attached around the plywood piece to give the illusion that

16:37the shelf is actually thicker than it really is.

16:40My last set of holes needed to be done after the trim was added around the shelf, since

16:44the first hole is directly split over two of the pieces of wood.

16:47Now I'm attaching all of these pieces to the long back piece with some more wood glue

16:51and screws, and making sure that everything is spaced evenly.

16:54Which involves some math, which can be hard sometimes.

16:5770 and a quarter, okay.

16:5970 and a quarter minus three quarters is...

17:0660 and a half?

17:0869 and a half?

17:10What?

17:11No.

17:13Oh, sorry.

17:1470.25.

17:25Now I will stain it.

17:26I'm staining the shelf in the color Early American, and then I'm bringing it home to

17:29install in the laundry room.

17:31I'm screwing directly through the back and the side edge pieces into studs in my wall

17:34to make sure this shelf is super sturdy and can hold everything I need it to.

17:38Now that it's up, I'm coating the whole thing in several coats of polyurethane to make sure

17:42this can withstand any moisture and protect any of my clothing from the stain.

17:46This step is super important.

17:48Don't skip it.

17:50Okay, we are getting so close to the end.

17:54I can feel it.

17:55So, today, I want to get some doors down here.

17:58I did a quick, a quick internet search onto cabinet doors.

18:03Excuse me?

18:05Like, over $100 for one cabinet door?

18:07I think not.

18:09I've already spent way too much money bringing this room to life.

18:12But we're going to do a little more cost efficient version for now.

18:16It can always be something I upgrade down the road.

18:18So, let me show you what I have.

18:20I guess, mind you, I should say that these are also really big doors, and that's probably

18:24why the cost to get something this size.

18:27But still, no.

18:28That shouldn't be why.

18:30Okay, regardless, I have here two sheets of very basic, I think, half inch plywood,

18:37and this is going to work fine for now.

18:39And this was about $30 for both of these together, so that's already feeling much better.

18:44I've already added some very basic hinges to the outside, and it should be as simple

18:49as just screwing them onto the edges of this frame down here.

18:55Okay, hold on.

18:56Okay, hold on.

18:57This is actually perfect timing, because I just got a very exciting package in the mail

19:00that I actually kind of forgot that I ordered way back at the beginning of this whole project.

19:05It feels like I've been working on this for so long.

19:07I got this off of a vintage reseller who sells sort of salvage stuff.

19:13And these, oh, they're so cute, are vintage Starburst door knobs, or door handles.

19:23So, it's a basic chrome knob, but then it has this back plate that goes behind it that's

19:30a little Starburst.

19:32And, okay, do we see this?

19:35I kind of thought at first that I could use this as a door knob on the door, but seeing

19:40them now, they're pretty tiny.

19:42But I do think, you know where I could use them?

19:45Down here, on these cabinet doors.

19:47I have two of them.

19:48I'll link the Etsy shop, because this is so cute.

19:50She sent me the original hardware and the new hardware, just in case the original hardware

19:56is a bit worse for wear.

20:00Which it is.

20:01It's a bit rusty.

20:02So maybe I'll use the new screws.

20:10I want to see this as like your basic option at the hardware store.

20:15I want the most simple thing that you can get to still have some flair.

20:20Now, I'm not going to leave this raw wood, of course.

20:24I'm going to say something that goes against typically what I would do.

20:27I'm a big fan of if you make something out of wood, keep it wood.

20:31Staining it is fine, but keep it feeling like wood, you know?

20:34Painting wood is kind of like my last resort option, speaking about me and my home and

20:40my projects personally.

20:42But I am a little bit concerned, because I already stained the outside frame of this

20:48cabinet with the same wood stain I've been using everywhere else.

20:51And it doesn't exactly match the exact tone of this countertop.

20:56And I think it's going to be really hard for me to get an exact match.

21:00And I'm worried that if I stain the doors, it's a different kind of wood, it's going

21:05to look off, and it's just going to make the countertop not look great, and make the doors

21:09not look great, and really distract from the homeroom.

21:11So, I'm going to go against my better judgment, and I think I'm going to paint the doors.

21:15Share your opinions, because you might not like this even more.

21:19Not only am I going to paint them, I really want to make sure that I'm nailing home the

21:24sort of retro, mid-century vibe.

21:28And I think what we're missing are some fun vintage colors.

21:33So I think that I'm going to paint the cupboards...

21:37...a nice retro, bright, butter yellow.

21:43Is this going to be a mistake?

21:46It's possible.

21:47And I just got to try it, you know?

21:49We got to have some fun in here.

21:50We need some more fun.

21:52Let's get fun.

21:57Oh my god.

21:58Wait.

22:00Come on.

22:02Does this all fit in there?

22:06I don't know.

22:15That's like a primer, I guess, right?

22:17I didn't think that you'd like it.

22:19It's just in a little spot.

22:24Just wait until it's done done.

22:26Alright.

22:28Okay, so I might need to work on warming Austin up to the yellow, but let me know if you guys

22:32get it.

22:33Do you see the vision?

22:34Or if not, is there a different color you would have done instead?

22:41So with that done, we're now on to the final touches.

22:44So while I style this place, I want to share with you a secret project that I've been working

22:47on behind the scenes.

22:48I've been designing a one-of-a-kind piece of art for this space, inspired by a combination

22:52of two of my favorite sweaters.

22:54I wanted something full of rich color with a retro print feel, and I wanted it to have

22:58a personal touch with the care instructions in the tag.

23:01I'm so happy with how this finished piece turned out, and if you'd like to get a digital
