00:00The U.S. has defended its recent meeting with Hamas as the Trump administration attempts
00:06to bring the hostilities in Gaza to a close.
00:11Talks for the second phase of the ceasefire are due to resume in Qatar this week.
00:17U.S. envoy for hostages Adam Baller told Al Arabiya News he is optimistic about their
00:24conversation and the return of the remaining hostages.
00:29The reason that I met with Hamas like that is because I'm a big believer in dialogue.
00:36I think that through dialogue one gets to understand various people.
00:41And I think the meetings with Hamas gave me some hope.
00:45One, it gave me hope that there would eventually be an end to something that's not productive
00:53for many countries.
00:56It gave me hope that there would be an opportunity to rebuild Gaza and that there was some flexibility
01:03on the Hamas side where there wasn't.
01:04So I think I know there's talks going on this week, but I'm cautiously optimistic about
01:10some advances and especially about some hostages coming out.
01:14And I thought from the conversation that there was possibility to get something done in a
01:20way that would work for the region.
01:22I did believe that.
01:23Now, it's very easy to say that.
01:25It's very different to do it.
01:28And part of my belief, because one of the questions becomes, how do you set it up so
01:33that Hamas doesn't rearm?
