Bermondsey Welcomes Refugees presents its fundraising event:

'The Astonishing World of Space Exploration' with Tira Shubart

We are living in one of the most exciting times ever for human space flight and space exploration.

With the recent splash down of the first commercial space capsule Dragon, built by Space X, returning astronauts from the International Space Station was a remarkable achievement. Another spacecraft, Orion, is on schedule for a moon mission this decade and then Mars in the 2030s.

We will look back at the rivalry of the US-Soviet space race which created some of the most remarkable technology in human history and the bravery of the people who gazed down on our blue planet, walked in space and left footprints on the moon. The space race laid the foundations for the astonishing International Space Station which for 20 years has been inhabited by astronauts & cosmonauts as they orbit above us at 17,500 miles per hour.

We will discuss what we have learned from exploring space, both in manned and unmanned missions and a few highlights to look forward to in the coming months in our solar system and beyond.
Tira Shubart has covered news worldwide for several international broadcasters, but sadly never in outer space. Her favourite news stories have taken her to NASA and ESA (the European Space Agency). Tira is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and an Ambassador for the Science Museum. Earth is currently her favourite planet.

This is a fundraising event in aid of the work of Bermondsey Welcomes Refugees, a community group of volunteers working to resettle a vulnerable refugee family in the UK, through the UK Government's Community Sponsorship scheme.
