00:001979, Africa, a real revelation.
00:10For this first stage on African soil, we started on a tarmac road, so it was pretty fast.
00:18And then suddenly we turned left and it was pure desert.
00:23Nothing but desert.
00:25The desert, the desert, the desert and the sand.
00:29And all of a sudden I felt incredibly good.
00:34I felt like I was at home.
00:36I thought it's amazing, marvellous, magnificent, sublime.
00:40I kept going and my racing instincts from Enduro soon kicked in.
00:45It was extraordinary.
00:48I got to the end of the stage and I couldn't believe it.
00:56OK, the bike's working very well for the time being.
00:59I'm looking after it.
01:01I've been given detailed instructions on how to take care of the engine and the bike.
01:05And I hope to go all the way.
01:12Every day there were refuelling trucks posted along the stage.
01:16One, two or three stops, depending on how long it was.
01:21So you definitely didn't want to miss the truck.
01:24It happened to me once, so I had to go begging for fuel.
01:28I did it several times in order to finish the stage.
01:32And I was so good at begging that I finished the stage with practically a full tank of petrol.
01:37Because everyone kept giving me fuel.
01:49We had two rest days in Gao.
01:52So we were able to make some repairs.
01:55And I made the most of it to do some laundry in the river Niger.
02:03Laundry on the rest day, Martine?
02:06A domestic goddess never loses her touch.
02:09I've got no choice.
02:11This is the only way to wash our clothes and we haven't got enough for three weeks.
02:17We're all in this battle together, so everyone to the river.
02:29For the bikers it was a nightmare.
02:32I was part of Team Honda and we had a DC3.
02:36When the plane was there it was great.
02:39We were lucky.
02:41But when it wasn't, it was a different story.
02:44Provisions hadn't been planned for us.
02:46So at times there were no food.
02:48We had nothing to eat.
02:53We had a can of water but a lot of us put fuel in it instead.
02:57Because it was more important to have fuel than water.
03:00I remember one stage starting in Gao.
03:03And we had around 900km to cover.
03:07And the three of us riding for Honda set off with a pack of biscuits and a tin of sardines each.
03:12The conditions were really, really, very, very hard.
