00:00:00This program documents actual homicide investigations.
00:00:10Criminal charges are often dropped or reduced, and all suspects shown are presumed innocent
00:00:14unless proven guilty.
00:00:19For homicide detectives, the clock starts ticking the moment they are called.
00:00:23Did y'all give him any money?
00:00:24I wish I had.
00:00:25She lying, ain't she?
00:00:26She lying.
00:00:27If we can get to her, we can get to him.
00:00:35Their chance of solving a murder is cut in half if they don't get a lead within the first
00:00:4548 hours.
00:00:46You think I'm just playing with you?
00:00:47Stitches get stitches.
00:00:48You will get killed.
00:00:49Harris County, Texas, 3 a.m., 14 miles north of downtown Houston, a 911 call comes in for
00:01:19a man from the old Bama neighborhood.
00:01:34When police arrive, they find a man lying on the road beside his truck, dead.
00:01:46What we know at this point is that we have a male and a female that were riding in this
00:02:08truck.
00:02:09Sergeant Craig Clopton, an 18-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff's Office, will
00:02:15lead the investigation.
00:02:16I'll talk to the female first that was in that truck and see what she has to tell me.
00:02:33Who is he to you?
00:02:34My husband.
00:02:35Your husband?
00:02:36Yes.
00:02:37Okay.
00:02:38And are y'all legally married?
00:02:39No.
00:02:40We've been together two years.
00:02:41Two years?
00:02:42I've known him for 20 years.
00:02:43You know that he didn't make it.
00:02:58The victim, 37-year-old John Craig Froelich, worked as a marine engineer and was known
00:03:04to his friends as Craig.
00:03:07Tell me what happened.
00:03:10We came over here to buy dope.
00:03:15The victim's girlfriend, Clara, says they were cruising the apartment complex looking
00:03:20to buy crack.
00:03:21Both of y'all do crack?
00:03:23They found a black man and white woman sitting in the parking lot, willing to sell them drugs.
00:03:29So, you going in there...
00:03:32I was like...
00:03:33I asked him if he had a 40.
00:03:34And he said, go down the street or something.
00:03:38She says the man told them he would get the crack while they circled the block.
00:03:42And we turned around and came back.
00:03:44And this jelly black cop, he pulled a gun out and says, tell you what, just give me
00:03:51your money.
00:03:52And I was like, well, wait, hold on.
00:03:56And he popped it upside the head with a gun.
00:04:01And Craig just threw it in reverse and gunned it.
00:04:05And he was dead.
00:04:07How many times did he shoot?
00:04:09Just once.
00:04:10Blood was everywhere.
00:04:13Clara says they tore out of the parking lot, turned at the intersection, and drove for
00:04:18half a block.
00:04:19I told him to pull over and let me drive to the hospital.
00:04:23And I tried to help him get to the back seat.
00:04:27But he just fell.
00:04:31Tammy.
00:04:32That's his girlfriend, the white chick.
00:04:35The witness says she saw the victim's truck drive up to the apartment.
00:04:38And that's when Gable told them, pull up in here.
00:04:41Pull all the way up in the apartment.
00:04:43They pulled all the way up to the front.
00:04:45I heard a shooting.
00:04:47He was trying to rob them.
00:04:48OK.
00:04:49The witness says she saw the victim's truck speed out of the parking lot.
00:04:53Did you see what Gable and Tammy did?
00:04:55Did you see where they went?
00:04:57Yeah, they hopped in Tammy's car.
00:04:58They made a right at the light.
00:05:00And what kind of car is that?
00:05:02All I knew is green and all the windows broke.
00:05:06Do you recognize Gable if you saw a picture of him?
00:05:08Yeah.
00:05:09Do you recognize Tammy if you saw a picture of him?
00:05:11Oh, most definitely.
00:05:12OK.
00:05:15Clopton checks the database for anyone named Tammy, connected with a late model green car.
00:05:20Finds the arrest record of a woman named Tammy, who was stopped while driving a green Chrysler Sebring.
00:05:27She just went to jail a few days ago.
00:05:32Tammy.
00:05:33We can get to her, we can get to him.
00:05:42Take time, look at that and see if you recognize anybody.
00:05:44Do you recognize anybody?
00:05:55600 miles away, Birmingham, Alabama.
00:05:5911.30 p.m.
00:06:01A woman calls 911 from a West End apartment complex.
00:06:06Birmingham Police.
00:06:07Yes, ma'am, can you send an officer?
00:06:09What's going on, ma'am?
00:06:10My friend, she's been shot.
00:06:14You know, she's bleeding bad.
00:06:17Police respond to the scene and find a woman lying by her car.
00:06:21That's going to be life-threatening injuries on this.
00:06:24We're going to need a homicide out.
00:06:27The victim is rushed to the hospital, but she dies.
00:06:45What's going on, ma'am?
00:07:09She's already gone.
00:07:11She was pronounced at 0013.
00:07:16The victim is 33-year-old Josie Grimmett, who went by the nickname Shea.
00:07:22She worked with the elderly and was the mother of three boys.
00:07:31The rookie's already done the report.
00:07:33Oh, he's in there?
00:07:34Yeah.
00:07:35Okay.
00:07:36She's en route to...
00:07:39The friend of the victim who called 911 has been taken to headquarters for questioning.
00:07:44She told officers on the scene she was in the car with the victim when the shooting occurred.
00:07:51Teeth?
00:07:52No.
00:07:55She witnessed the dude come up, and the girl got into an argument, and the dude threw the gun at her.
00:08:02Okay.
00:08:03She know the dude.
00:08:05Okay.
00:08:08We're going to tow these cars and get to the building and see what's going on.
00:08:18Back at headquarters, detectives prepare to interview the eyewitness.
00:08:23We got an eyewitness who knows who the shooter is.
00:08:26I'd say we're in pretty good shape right now.
00:08:29Detective John Tanks,
00:08:32Detective John Tanks, on homicide for just over a year, will lead the investigation.
00:08:45Well, I know you and Shea were pretty close, okay?
00:08:49Well, she didn't make it.
00:08:53She didn't make it?
00:08:54No, ma'am. She didn't make it.
00:08:57Oh, no.
00:09:02Since it's a homicide now, we're trying to get as much information on him as we can.
00:09:09We want to get it.
00:09:11And you say you know his name.
00:09:23In the Birmingham homicide case of Josie Shea Grimmett,
00:09:27Detective John Tanks and his team are talking to the victim's friend and eyewitness who said she knows the suspect.
00:09:42And you say you know his name.
00:09:46Eric.
00:09:47The witness says she met Eric a few weeks before and hung out with him a few times.
00:09:53Okay. What happened?
00:09:55Well, Shea came over.
00:09:57She says Shea had driven over to her apartment to pick up some CDs.
00:10:01They were sitting in Shea's car talking when the suspect walked up to the driver's side door and Shea got out.
00:10:08Well, as far as I know, they don't know each other.
00:10:12All right, so, I mean, do you remember, remember anything specifically he said or...
00:10:19They was arguing about her being gay.
00:10:22They was arguing about her being gay.
00:10:35So you think this is the first time he ever saw Shea?
00:10:40I believe so.
00:10:41But you said he, uh, didn't like her because she was gay.
00:10:47So, obviously he had to know some kind of way, right?
00:10:51They could have known each other, but, you know, I don't think so.
00:10:59How old is he?
00:11:00He's about 25.
00:11:0125. What does he look like?
00:11:03Um, he dark skinned, he got a low hair clip.
00:11:07Um, he's about 6 feet.
00:11:11He normally hang out around that area?
00:11:13Yeah, I see him at Shell.
00:11:15At the Shell station.
00:11:22This is our guy.
00:11:26According to her, the suspect doesn't know the victim.
00:11:33I mean, which is kind of strange.
00:11:35I don't know what would prompt him to come to her window and, you know, confront her about anything.
00:11:42I don't have no choice but to believe what she's saying right now.
00:11:46Unless we find out otherwise.
00:11:48We're gonna show a photo line-up.
00:11:50Um, we'll be way ahead of the game if she picks him out.
00:11:56Yeah, number four.
00:12:02I'm back, Tasha. This ain't gonna take long.
00:12:09Look at those and see if you see anybody that's, uh, looks familiar to you on that photo.
00:12:15Looks familiar to you on that photo.
00:12:24Number three.
00:12:40Just, uh, stay seated for us for a minute.
00:12:43And, uh, you go get some stuff worked out. We'll be right back, okay?
00:12:52She lying, ain't she?
00:12:55She lying.
00:12:57He definitely didn't do it.
00:12:58He didn't do it.
00:13:01The person she picked out in the photo line-up is dead.
00:13:05In Harris County, Texas, Sergeant Craig Clopton and his team are investigating the homicide of John Craig Froelich, killed by a single gunshot while being robbed.
00:13:21They found an eyewitness who recognized both the shooter, a man she knows as Gabriel, and his girlfriend.
00:13:28Now, Sergeant Clopton needs to find out if the witness can ID the girlfriend.
00:13:35Recognize anybody?
00:13:37Or fleeing with the shooter.
00:13:40Okay. At this point, still trying to locate a picture of Gabriel.
00:13:45When we do, we're gonna come look you up and show you another spread, okay?
00:13:51Okay. Thank you, ma'am.
00:13:55With Tammy's picture in hand, Sergeants Clopton and Miller head out to canvass the neighborhood around the area.
00:14:02With Tammy's picture in hand, Sergeants Clopton and Miller head out to canvass the neighborhood around the crime scene.
00:14:05Guess we'll kind of wander around a bit, see if we see anybody walking around.
00:14:11Might get lucky and somebody say, yeah, I know Gabriel.
00:14:14How you doing? Have you seen this girl here?
00:14:17I got this probably a few days ago.
00:14:24You can't hear me?
00:14:25Nah, she's not fat.
00:14:28Don't know anybody named Gabriel? Black guy?
00:14:31No, sir.
00:14:37Hello? Yeah.
00:14:40The canvassing pays off.
00:14:42He said he gonna duck off for six months and then come back.
00:14:46They get a call from someone from the neighborhood who just talked to the suspect, Gabriel.
00:14:51When he called you, what number did he call you from?
00:14:54The caller gives them Gabriel's cell phone number.
00:14:57Hey, I appreciate you calling then.
00:15:00Alright, thank you.
00:15:07I have a phone number for Gabriel.
00:15:09We have a lot of databases we can check.
00:15:12Hopefully find out...
00:15:18I'm gonna put him in a lineup.
00:15:20I'm gonna put him in a lineup.
00:15:22And tomorrow I'll get with our eyewitness and see if she can pick him out.
00:15:33The next morning, Compton and Miller head over to meet their eyewitness.
00:15:41Take your time with the photo spray and tell me if you recognize anybody in there.
00:15:51And who is that?
00:15:52That's Gabriel.
00:15:54Yeah, that's the one who shot me.
00:15:56Okay.
00:15:57The woman identifies Gabriel Carnell as the alleged shooter.
00:16:08Then...
00:16:10I saw this guy.
00:16:12You saw this guy?
00:16:14Yeah.
00:16:16Then...
00:16:19That's Sergeant Compton.
00:16:21Compton gets another break.
00:16:23You see that green Seabreen?
00:16:25Yeah, up there, Tammy caught the green and all the windows broke.
00:16:29A patrol officer has spotted Tammy's car parked at another apartment complex.
00:16:34Does it look like it's abandoned or is it just in a parking spot like this?
00:16:39I wanna come over there.
00:16:41If you can just sit up on it.
00:16:44With 12 hours left in the first 48,
00:16:47Compton and Miller head to the complex hoping to find the suspects.
00:16:51We don't know at this point if Tammy is with Gabriel or not.
00:16:59Maybe he's with her.
00:17:02That's it right there.
00:17:05Duck tape all on the window.
00:17:08There's only one way in and one way out.
00:17:12Still there?
00:17:14Yeah.
00:17:16If it leaves out, just pop it on traffic.
00:17:20Along with patrol units, Compton and Miller stake out the apartment complex.
00:17:26Along with patrol units, Compton and Miller stake out the apartment complex.
00:17:41Several hours pass, with no sign of the suspects.
00:17:51He's going in there.
00:17:53Let's go in there
00:17:56Clopton and Miller decide to question a resident of one of the apartments near Tammy's parked car
00:18:05Hello, sorry Clopton Sheriff's Department, okay, sorry to disturb you
00:18:11See this green vehicle right there
00:18:16Have you seen it out here before Jane white girls right one of these apartments
00:18:24We
00:18:31The woman says she's seen Tammy and her boyfriend hanging out at one of the nearby apartments
00:18:41He doesn't reside here, but I thought I saw him earlier today. She gives Clopton the apartment number
00:18:54Oh
00:18:59Sheriff's Department open the door
00:19:09In the Birmingham homicide case of Josie Shay Grimmett
00:19:13Detective John tanks talked to a friend of the victim and eyewitness who said she knew the shooter and gave them his name
00:19:21But when they showed her a photo lineup, she did not pick him out person she picked out a photo line of the state
00:19:31He died no three
00:19:37When we make up these lineups we put in random people that did a general description of the suspect
00:19:43Our witness she didn't pick out the guy that she knows she picked out a guy that's been dead for six years
00:19:51She covered for some reason
00:19:55But she's in each other
00:19:59Tell you what probably fine
00:20:04He may have lost 10 pounds because he's running and hustling
00:20:13Detectives decide to release the eyewitness
00:20:16We're gonna do a lifeline out once we capture this guy
00:20:20Did he is on her ID of this suspect?
00:20:24Right now she's pretty much all we have
00:20:32The next day with no address to go on tanks begins his search for the man the witness says is the shooter
00:20:42Let's go on this wagons chase
00:20:47I
00:20:49Seen this guy two or three days ago, maybe two or three days ago
00:20:57Never seen him right here
00:21:10See him around
00:21:12People
00:21:15We know he'd been in the neighborhood
00:21:27The next morning
00:21:29Homicides tanks tanks gets a call from the eyewitness
00:21:34So it wasn't him
00:21:36She admits that she gave him the wrong name when they interviewed her the day before
00:21:41Well, I'm gonna need you to come back down and talk to me, okay, all right
00:21:49Turns out this Eric I had nothing to do with it
00:21:52It's frustrating because we wasted a whole day of investigating when we could have been actually chasing a person that did it
00:22:01But she decided to come forward with the truth and and that's what's important. That's what matters
00:22:11A few hours later
00:22:20We're gonna start from scratch start from again, okay
00:22:23Initially you said that
00:22:26Someone named Eric did it, right?
00:22:28You ever met Eric?
00:22:31You know anything about you
00:22:35What did that name come on
00:22:38Somebody who
00:22:45What point did he tell you that well when he put the gun in my head
00:22:58In the Harris County homicide case of John Craig Froelich
00:23:02Sergeant Craig Clopton and his team have two suspects
00:23:06Gabriel Carnell and Tammy Worley they found Tammy's car
00:23:11Now they need to find Tammy. Sheriff's department open the door
00:23:32There is no response
00:23:34We got witnesses to say that she's been coming in our department
00:23:38We don't have anybody to say she was in there right now. So we wouldn't be able to kick the door anyway
00:23:44They were probably just take the car
00:23:48And I just filed a warrant
00:23:55I'm gonna go ahead and told Tammy's car. Maybe once she sees her car is gone. She'll call me
00:24:05In
00:24:10The first 48
00:24:12Sergeant Craig Clopton and his team
00:24:14Responded to the murder of John Craig Froelich shot to death while being robbed
00:24:19Learned that the alleged shooter Gabriel Carnell and his girlfriend Tammy Worley fled the scene in a green car
00:24:26Found the car and impounded it but saw no signs of the suspects
00:24:35Two days later Tammy Worley shows
00:24:46She called me yesterday said that she was scared she wanted to come and give her side of the story
00:24:54Okay, Tim, yeah, let's try to start in it in the beginning
00:24:58I
00:25:00Walking down the sidewalk
00:25:02Tammy says she was walking to the apartment parking lot to pick up her car when she saw the victim's truck pull in
00:25:08I had a gunshot the truck just started moving almost hit me. I'm trying to run. I jumped right in my car truck take out
00:25:16I'm gone. I'm trying to get home
00:25:19If nobody was in my car, but me
00:25:24Is that all you want to say on your statement
00:25:28I
00:25:34Just want to know everything that you know
00:25:42The story that you gave me is
00:25:46Totally bogus. I
00:25:49Already know who the shooter is. I can tell you who the shooter is
00:25:54But what you need to know
00:25:57Is that if you are going to continue to lie to me
00:26:02You're gonna get charged with capital murder
00:26:05Alongside him even though you didn't shoot. How can I get charged with it? That's on you Tim
00:26:12That's on you
00:26:14You're involved in it. This is your opportunity. You want to be a defendant or or a witness?
00:26:26In
00:26:34The Harris County homicide case of John Craig Froelich sergeant Copton has a suspect Gabriel Carnell
00:26:42Now he's got Gabriel's girlfriend. Tammy Worley in the interrogation room
00:26:48Want to be a defendant or or witness?
00:26:56You're gonna have this opportunity to be straightforward
00:27:17You need to clear your hands of it
00:27:27Okay, this is your statement
00:27:29This is what you roll with. I just don't want my name won't go up in nothing me. I don't need my name and nothing
00:27:45It eventually got to a point where you know, she's adamant that she's not gonna tell me the truth
00:27:51She was here voluntarily. I can't can't keep her here
00:27:55It's kind of frustrating
00:27:57But she has put herself there. She has put Gabriel there. I have a witness that saw Gabriel do the shooting
00:28:06And whether she tells Gabriel or not I can't prevent that if she does and he goes on the run we'll just be looking for
00:28:25Two weeks later police find Gabriel Carnell
00:28:44You're charged with capital murder
00:28:47Let me just explain this to you. It ain't no
00:28:50Fluke there that you charged with this. Okay, there's evidence
00:28:57Tammy that gave her statement. I
00:28:59Know that guy came over there to buy dope
00:29:02Okay, I know what your intentions were
00:29:07It ain't no question of who shot the guy
00:29:11Okay, you shot the guy
00:29:13The only question is why?
00:29:21In
00:29:24The Birmingham homicide case of Josie Shea Grimmett
00:29:28Detective John tanks found out that the victim's friend and eyewitness lied about the identity of the shooter and that her ex-boyfriend
00:29:37Marcus was the person who told her to lie
00:29:39What point did he tell you
00:29:49Hi Tasha, just start from again and tell me what happened
00:29:55He came up to the driver door, so you and Shay were in the car talking and he walked up to the car
00:30:03What's the first thing he said
00:30:06Why don't you want to call my girlfriend
00:30:09You can't you bitch, you know, my girl ain't like that no more
00:30:15so
00:30:16Chase it. I'm like, you know, we ain't together me and her aren't together
00:30:23Yeah, don't make me go under my seat and get this night
00:30:26After he shot her, what did he do?
00:30:30Put the gun in my head and said bitch if you tell on me, I'm gonna kill you and your mom
00:30:37And then what did he do?
00:30:40Why didn't you tell us this initially
00:30:43Because I was young and I didn't know how to deal with the situation
00:30:47I was young and I didn't know how to deal with the situation
00:30:50I was young and I didn't know how to deal with the situation
00:30:52Why didn't you tell us this initially
00:30:58The witness says she started to feel guilty about lying to the detectives
00:31:07What's Marcus last name nasty
00:31:11It's been a prison for attempted murder
00:31:15He's pretty dangerous guy
00:31:17From what witness say he shot this woman when her back was turned in cold blood
00:31:22We don't have to get him
00:31:25Looks like he has three outstanding ones
00:31:30Let me go tell them that I'm not gonna tell them
00:31:33I'm not gonna tell them
00:31:35I'm not gonna tell them
00:31:37I'm not gonna tell them
00:31:40Let me go tell them that
00:31:42Tanks alerts patrol to pick up Marcus
00:31:45Got the last known address
00:31:59In the first 48
00:32:01Detective John tanks and his team responded to the homicide of Josie Shea Grimmett
00:32:07Found out the eyewitness and friend of the victim gave them a false suspect
00:32:12Got her to tell the truth and learn the identity of the real suspect her ex-boyfriend
00:32:18a man named Marcus Massey
00:32:22Late that night
00:32:24Police find Marcus Massey at his grandmother's house and bring him to headquarters for questioning
00:32:30Could be
00:32:31When I walk in the room, he might
00:32:33Decide not to talk to me
00:32:35But you know
00:32:36I kind of want to make him feel comfortable and um
00:32:41I don't want to freeze up
00:32:49Hey sit up man so I can talk to you now
00:32:53I'm here to talk to you about a case that happened two days ago over there where your girlfriend lived
00:33:01Oh girl
00:33:02Tosh. Yeah, your name came up
00:33:07Okay, i'm gonna cut to the chase with you, all right
00:33:10You know why i'm down here. I'm talking to you about this homicide
00:33:14your girl
00:33:15Your girl said you did it
00:33:27In the birmingham homicide case of josie shea grimmett detective john tanks is questioning his suspect
00:33:34the ex-boyfriend of the eyewitness
00:33:36A man named marcus massey
00:33:42Your girl said you did it
00:33:46But it's two sides to every story
00:33:50You killed this girl
00:33:53What I want from you is a reason why
00:34:03The reason why I did
00:34:06The reason why she did something what did she do
00:34:10How you don't know that she did this or what? You know what i'm saying? Did she do it?
00:34:14She was telling me, you know what i'm saying? There's so many words, you know what i'm saying? Whoa
00:34:19She's saying so many words
00:34:23It is just a lot of things in there, you know what i'm saying
00:34:28Bro
00:34:29Let's be smart about this. Okay
00:34:32You know in your heart i'm telling you the truth
00:34:35I'm asking you
00:34:38What happened
00:34:47You just won't get it up with you
00:34:50I did not do nothing
00:34:52All right, it's almost 3 30. That's all you got to say bro
00:34:58Yes
00:35:02Can I go
00:35:04Okay
00:35:09With the uh
00:35:11The evidence that I got I don't I don't I don't I don't think I have a problem with this case, so
00:35:18We're gonna charge
00:35:30He's telling on me
00:35:35Okay, i'm glad we got this guy off the street he doesn't seem to care much about anything
00:35:42Why she's dead
00:35:45As far as we can tell jealousy, that's it
00:36:05So
00:36:12My sister gone she won't be here for christmas thanksgiving she wants to cheer her all across the stage
00:36:20She wants none of that birthdays nothing
00:36:26I just want to ask him why he had to kill her like that. Why?
00:36:35So
00:36:48In the harris county homicide case of john craig froelich
00:36:52Sergeant clopton and his team tracked down the suspect
00:36:55gabriel carnell
00:36:57Now sergeant clopton is about to find out if he'll talk
00:37:05Not for a minute do I believe that you said
00:37:09Tonight i'm gonna kill somebody. I don't believe that there are people like that
00:37:16I never in my life said I'd kill nobody
00:37:19Like I told you I only have
00:37:22One side of the story
00:37:24You hold the other
00:37:26Okay, so I want you to tell me
00:37:28first what uh
00:37:31Was you there? No, I wasn't
00:37:33I was with my girlfriend. Who's that jamesha?
00:37:38So you don't know nothing about the shooting no, they told me about it
00:37:42Early like early that day. I don't want to know about what somebody told you you're saying you didn't have nothing to do with the shooting
00:37:48No, sir
00:37:49That's the story you want to roll with
00:37:51Yes, sir. Okay, well go ahead and stop the interview
00:37:58There's
00:38:01There's
00:38:02I mean, there's just no remorse there. He you know, he looked me in the eye and and said I wasn't there
00:38:07And uh, I know that to not be true
00:38:13I think their family will be pleased and relieved and knowing
00:38:17that he's in jail
00:38:20That bit of comfort but I know in my heart that it's it's not enough, you know, they
00:38:25Nothing can replace their their loved one
00:38:30So
00:38:42This is one of the last pictures of craig with our dog mini
00:38:48He
00:38:50Isn't garbage on the side of a road. He was somebody's son and brother and cousin
00:38:57And we loved him and love him still
00:39:04If I could say anything it would be don't put yourself at risk
00:39:12That way you don't have to contend
00:39:14With the ones who don't care about anything but themselves they're surviving and if you get in their way
00:39:20They get you out of their way
00:39:22so
00:39:24it's just
00:39:26It's sad that my son didn't quite pick that up
00:39:57I think
00:40:12What the hell
00:40:14Foreign
00:40:22On december 27 2003
00:40:24In the office and we get a call to respond to a person deceased in a house over on boulder crest
00:40:30This particular part of atlanta is really interesting because it's on the cusp of another jurisdiction in atlanta
00:40:37Residents in that area in this particular house
00:40:39If you were to call 9-1-1 you may get atlanta police or you may get the cab county police
00:40:43That's how close the line was to this particular house this time. It fell in atlanta. So on this day, it got me and my partner
00:40:59Hey j
00:41:00What do we got?
00:41:02The call came in the shots fired. All right, who called it in?
00:41:05It was an anonymous call from a pay phone. You know, if someone's calling 9-1-1 from a pay phone
00:41:10We're thinking they don't want to be identified. So right now our suspicions are up
00:41:15I waited for backup. We went inside and found a deceased male in the living room. All right, let's take a look
00:41:21Thanks
00:41:25This is a pretty interesting crime scene
00:41:28But when we walk in we don't feel the warmth of a family living here. It looks a little sinister
00:41:34Looks like they just moved in
00:41:36Huh?
00:41:37Maybe he lives alone
00:41:38We clearly see a black male on his back with dreads with what appears to be gunshot wounds to the front of his torso
00:41:47It looks like he didn't get the call for help as we're examining a victim
00:41:50We also see a cell phone right next to our victim's left hand. You know, that's a crucial piece of evidence
00:41:57We don't know what was going on. We'll be really interested on who the person was he last spoke to
00:42:02Hey fellas, what up Alex? Hey Alex, so the medical examiner arrives on scene. Yeah gunshot wounds pretty recent
00:42:09Do you mind if we take a look? No, go ahead
00:42:13We go into his pocket and in his pocket we find his id
00:42:17so wali muhammad
00:42:1925 years old
00:42:20Lived in decatur, georgia. I guess that is not his place. I mean that's not really close to this location
00:42:27What's he doing over here while it's still the same county that's a whole nother city. All right, let me see if there's anything else
00:42:35Oh, he's got something back here. Oh
00:42:40These are 357s
00:42:42Christina can we bag this?
00:42:44Yes. Yeah, did you find a gun? I did not
00:42:48He's got a gun clipped to an automatic weapon on his person, but there's no gun anywhere near him or in his pocket
00:42:56I got a piece of paper here
00:43:00Yo, this guy just got out of county
00:43:02He's got like a jail receipt where he actually was just in jail like less than two days before this particular scene here
00:43:09That's terrible luck like who gets out of jail and gets killed
00:43:13We want to look around we want to see what other evidence we can find. Ooh, what's up?
00:43:18That's not a 357
00:43:20No
00:43:22It's a nine millimeter interestingly enough we find a nine millimeter handgun basically hidden in the couch
00:43:29dregs in the kitchen
00:43:31This is a trap house. No doubt about it. So we got to figure is our victim a customer or was he a seller?
00:43:39This is interesting, what's that?
00:43:42Letters here addressed to a leonard abbott
00:43:44So we find these letters with the name leonard abbott inscribed on them
00:43:48They actually have the address to where we're standing at. This is a clue
00:43:51Okay, so as we venture further into our crime scene, we see three
00:43:57357 caliber shell casings on the floor
00:44:00And they're on the floor like somebody was in here working with a gun. All right, so this is where the shooter opened fire from
00:44:08357
00:44:10Now isn't that the same caliber of bullet that we found in the fixed pocket? Yeah
00:44:15Maybe he got killed with his own gun
00:44:18Is this just a coincidence or is it just more to this story christina, can we bag this yes
00:44:24So we searched the entire residence. We do not find a 357
00:44:29Automatic pistol anywhere. So we know
00:44:32That killer took that gun with him. The only thing missing from this joint is
00:44:38his money exactly
00:44:40So that means somebody hit a drug man
00:44:41I mean, it's a possibility could have been a customer that turned into a robber and killed the victim who may have been the proprietor
00:44:48All right, let's wrap this up
00:44:50It's time to expand our vision. So we go into the backyard area
00:44:54There's this red chevy caprice that's you know, standing out like a stop sign. Ooh
00:45:01What's this?
00:45:02Could be a pretty big clue. It looks like it's a car
00:45:05Somebody's missing or belongs to maybe our victim whoever else lives here. So we run the tag. Thanks, man
00:45:12All right, so the car's registered to a kwami cook
00:45:15That's a new name
00:45:16We want to know who kwami cook is because why is your car in the back of a crime scene?
00:45:21But if his car is here, then he probably knows something. So
00:45:24Hey detectives, there's someone here that wants to talk to you
00:45:28What's up, man? What's your name?
00:45:30Eugene strong. He's actually our 911 caller. He came back to the scene that dead guy in there
00:45:37That's my friend
00:45:40All right, let's step over here talk for a second, thanks, man
00:45:46All right, so tell us what happened while he called me this morning
00:45:49Eugene strong goes on to tell us that his friend wali muhammad
00:45:53Actually asked him to give him a ride over to this boulder crest address
00:45:57He was gonna go inside pick something up and they'd be out of there. Did he say what he was picking up?
00:46:02No, just asked me to wait for him outside
00:46:05Be right back
00:46:09Eugene goes on to say about five minutes later. He hears shouting coming from inside the residence
00:46:15It drew his attention like he looked over next thing he knows
00:46:21He hears multiple gunshots going on after that I took off and drove to a pay phone and called 911
00:46:27We wonder if eugene is telling the truth. We have to tune in not just what the witness is saying
00:46:32But how they're saying it it was clear as we're looking and listening to eugene tell us this story
00:46:38But I wish I could have done something
00:46:40He's visibly shaken like this victim meant something to eugene. There's no doubt about that the shouting in the house
00:46:46Do you recognize any of the voices one was wali the other one? I don't know, but he had a jamaican accent
00:46:53We're thinking there's two people in there
00:46:55The argument starts literally minutes after our victim walks in that person with the jamaican accent. That's likely our killer
00:47:03All right, so the house
00:47:05It's a trap
00:47:06Right. Yeah wali sold dope there
00:47:10He says wali worked the trap house along with a guy named country a guy named jamaican
00:47:16Which matches up with that accent he heard and another guy named ed. Is there anything else you can add here?
00:47:22No, that's it
00:47:24Come on
00:47:26So
00:47:33Right now we got a couple names to go on one being leonard abbott that was found on mail addressed to him
00:47:39To our crime scene. All right. I got someone here. Okay, so it says he's listed as a suspect in an assault
00:47:44Okay, who's the victim?
00:47:46It looks like a girlfriend named courtney. He's somebody puts hands on people if you put hands on people
00:47:51It's not far-fetched that you put a gun in your hand and actually shot somebody. Is there a phone number there for courtney?
00:47:57Yeah
00:48:00Hello
00:48:01This is vince velasquez. I'm a homicide detective. I want to talk to you about leonard abbott
00:48:05We give a call to courtney and she's giving us some information. I don't know anything about a murder
00:48:11She lets us know straight up. That's not her man anymore. They're estranged
00:48:16Okay, so we found a few letters of his in a house over on boulder crest
00:48:19Yeah, that's where he works
00:48:21She says that's a drug house and her ex-old man he sells drugs there just like everybody else
00:48:30We got to think back to when we interviewed eugene he gave us a roll call of everybody he mentioned country
00:48:36All right. Thanks a lot
00:48:38So we finished the call with courtney and next up is kwame cook
00:48:42And we got to remember kwame cook is the person that has a vehicle in the back of this house
00:48:47Hey, what's going on, man? Yeah, we just need to ask you a few questions. That's it
00:48:52He's a little cagey, but he's trying to figure out what we want, but he's cooperative. I'll see you soon
00:48:56He agrees to come in for an interview the investigation appears to be moving in a positive direction
00:49:04But the suspect pool is deep what happened
00:49:09There was trouble at this trap you want to talk to you about your boyfriend, but you're making this
00:49:13Was the wildest of goose chase hunting for the killer is like chasing a ghost
00:49:18There's no record for nathaniel payne this brother has one fake name after another
00:49:23Finally an unexpected encounter will bring this case to a dramatic close
00:49:29This was a life or death situation
00:49:32It was gonna be me or him
00:49:35They had gunshot wounds pretty recently. We're working the murder of 25 year old wali muhammad
00:49:41Shot to death in a trap house just inside of southeast atlanta
00:49:45I don't know anything about a murder
00:49:48While searching for folks that frequented the residence, we just need to ask you a few questions
00:49:52That's it. We get in touch with kwame cook whose car was actually found behind our crime scene in the backyard
00:50:00He says you'll meet
00:50:02I don't know
00:50:03Something weird about that kid
00:50:05Yeah
00:50:07Whatever it is. We're gonna pull out. All right, don't worry. I'm thinking kwame is either the killer himself or he knows who the killer is
00:50:18So
00:50:20We're back at the office out of nowhere my phone rings
00:50:25Alaska's, how can I help you? It's an attorney representing kwame cook
00:50:29My client's willing to speak but I need to be present for the interview. This is suspicious. Like why is kwame lowering up right now?
00:50:36Okay, when can you meet?
00:50:37All right
00:50:38Looking forward to it
00:50:40Sounds like we got us a hot date. Can't wait to hear what he has to say. Kwame's protecting kwame in this situation
00:50:47So we're looking at him sideways, but we know we're going to get something
00:50:52The next day we meet with kwame and his attorney
00:50:58Gentlemen
00:50:59For the record. My client is cooperating when he doesn't have to
00:51:03We understand that
00:51:04Let's get started
00:51:06Okay. So why was your car at that house?
00:51:08It was getting worked on
00:51:10He says he gave that car to a friend of his named six nine to do some repair work on it
00:51:15Do you know this gentleman right here
00:51:19He says don't bet that house
00:51:21He says he frequents this place that he's a regular visitor kick it with my cousin. He identifies his cousin. It is eduardo. Hayes
00:51:31He says there's two other guys named wally and jamaican that also hang there
00:51:35Jamaican there's that name again. It's the same name. We heard our other witness talking about he heard arguing from inside the house
00:51:42Person with a jamaican accent now the jamaican, you know his real name
00:51:47No
00:51:48So where were you during the day on december 27th?
00:51:51Was in college park
00:51:53So you didn't go to a trap house all day that day
00:51:57No, I was in my house with a friend
00:52:01All right, do me a favor let me get his name and number
00:52:07Is there anything else yeah, we're done let's go
00:52:13Let's see what we can do with that
00:52:23We quickly verify kwame's alibi
00:52:26At this point we think he's given us everything. He knows we don't feel him being involved directly or indirectly in this murder
00:52:33As we're prepared to contact other people we get a call from another attorney
00:52:38Representing a guy by the name of eduardo hayes
00:52:41He says he's not giving us a statement, but based off the information that we got on hand right now
00:52:47We feel like the jamaican is the killer you would think this guy would be easy to find
00:52:51But when we searched our database for the name jamaican
00:52:54We came up with zero
00:53:00Hey, what do you got victim's phone
00:53:03We can go through his call log and see who he was communicating with up and around the time he was killed
00:53:08Okay, so a call comes in at 11 37 a.m. Yo, that's only a few minutes before the 911 call
00:53:15Check out the caller the number he called was stored in his contacts as jamaican
00:53:20Okay, so we know wally was talking to him right before the murder and we have them arguing right before the gunshot
00:53:25So this is it
00:53:26We know for a fact that there is a connection between a jamaican
00:53:30And our victim and we just got to figure out how and why
00:53:34We do a reverse lookup on the phone hoping we get lucky without a subpoena and we get nothing it's goose egg
00:53:40Okay, so no name associated with this number is on the public record
00:53:44Subpoena time. Yeah, we gotta slow play this from now
00:53:48We're not just gonna call the number and you know put ourselves on blast, you know
00:53:52We want to creep in we want to know more about this person before we just kill our investigation
00:53:58I wonder if wally's family can help at all. Hey
00:54:02It's vince. Velasquez over at apd
00:54:04We reached out to the victim's sister just to get some information
00:54:07Not just about our victim, but people that you know, our victim was associated with
00:54:12She basically says her brother lost his way
00:54:15But all in all he was a good guy and we've seen that before just because you're a drug dealer
00:54:20Doesn't make you a bad person. Thank you
00:54:23Bye
00:54:24So she doesn't know anything but she gave me the number to somebody who might
00:54:28Beautiful. She gave me the number for his girlfriend. Kari. I give her a call
00:54:31She agrees to sit down and have a conversation with me and my partner
00:54:42Thank you for agreeing to meet with us, yeah, no problem. I always knew this could happen
00:54:46I'm sure wally shared with you what was going on in his life
00:54:50Just ask
00:54:51Did he ever talk about the jamaican?
00:54:54Yeah, wally was on the phone with country and they were talking about money missing from the trap
00:54:59Country goes on to say he thinks the jamaican is responsible for the missing money
00:55:05When was this called two days before he died?
00:55:08Wally was talking to the jamaican and I could tell he was pissed
00:55:12The victim is mad about money missing and they're yelling at each other
00:55:16Thinking this is it. This is the reason why our victim is dead
00:55:20And then later that day he got into a fight with his other girlfriend
00:55:24Kari goes on to say our victim got arrested for like a disorderly conduct charge that explains the jail people again
00:55:31Do you know the jamaican's real name?
00:55:33No, we believe at this point that kari has given us the why in this investigation think of anything else. Give us a call
00:55:41We'll see
00:55:44So
00:55:48Yo, vinny
00:55:50Yep, I got the jamaican, baby
00:55:52We finally get subscriber information back on the jamaican's phone number. We now have a name kenroy drummond
00:55:58Not only do we have a name we find out kenroy drummond has an address in northwest atlanta
00:56:03Sounds like it's time to bust a move
00:56:06It's time for a visit tracking down. The suspect will be anything but easy. He's only 14 years old
00:56:12Yes, this has never happened to us before. It got me good man. Robbie just like last time he was a ghost
00:56:20This house and the crime scene tape don't match this particular trap house is something I had never seen before
00:56:26That's how they just moved down. Not only are these guys like straight-up businessmen with how they get down with their drug trade
00:56:32They got lawyers on speed dive. Is there anything else these guys could have been businessmen?
00:56:38Successful and did something totally different and had a different life. They chose the drug trade instead
00:56:44We always believe the welcoming spirit
00:56:47Yo, vinny. I got the jamaican, baby
00:56:49We've id'd wali muhammad's killer as a guy known on the street as the jamaican
00:56:56Okay, while reviewing our victims recent calls. We discover a contact in the phone listed as jamaica
00:57:03But we now have a name subscriber information on the same phone comes back to a person by the name of kenroy drummond
00:57:10Sounds like it's time to bust a move. Let's roll
00:57:13We're thinking this has to be the jamaican
00:57:21We go to the address that's listed for that phone number in northwest atlanta knock on the door
00:57:26Okay, so i'm detective vince velasquez with apd homicide you are jealous of drummond
00:57:31The interesting thing is jaleesa's got a jamaican accent. We got to be at the right place because we're looking for the jamaican
00:57:36So maybe that's her husband her son her brother. Hey, it's kenroy drummond around. I'm his mother. What's this about?
00:57:43Jaleesa tells us that kenroy drummond is only 14 years old. We're like damn. He's only 14 years old
00:57:50Yes, this isn't making sense because when you're 14 years old, you're not a jamaican
00:57:55Because when they did roll call they identified a jamaican as a man not a young boy
00:58:01We got to figure this out right now. Okay, jaleesa. So where was your son on december 27th?
00:58:06We were out of town for the holidays. She tells us he had nothing to do with anything involved in a homicide
00:58:11I mean, he's just a baby. So a phone registered in your son's name is connected to our case
00:58:17Oh, so you're looking for kenroy's father
00:58:20Okay, what's his name?
00:58:21Deshaun
00:58:22We haven't been together in a long time
00:58:25So we're thinking it's possible that maybe deshaun just used his son's name to cloak his identity
00:58:32Where does deshaun stay at the economy lodge on moorland?
00:58:35Thanks for your time. It seems we have a new name for the jamaican deshaun drummond
00:58:45After conversations with jaleesa, we went back to the office and entered deshaun's name into the database
00:58:50We found out that he had some prior arrests, but they were all misdemeanors, but that also meant we had a photo of him
00:58:56We printed out his book and photo and headed over the economy lodge where jaleesa told us he lived
00:59:02We spoke with the front desk clerk and actually showed him a picture of deshaun. He recognized him and said he no longer stayed there
00:59:09However, he told us deshaun works for a taxi company over on flat shows road
00:59:14So at that point we rushed over to the taxi cab company to see if we could find deshaun drummond
00:59:20And
00:59:23When we walk into this taxi company and we look into the break room we see deshaun i'm like there he is right there
00:59:29Eating lunch like bingo. We got it. We're where we need to be right now. We're with homicide
00:59:34We need to talk to you about a phone you means we get right to business with deshaun
00:59:38We ask him about the phone number registered to his 14 year old son. I'm my phone dad. I'm just putting out my son name
00:59:45Immediately I can hear his jamaican accent. We might be face to face with the killer right now. Well, I met my friend barrett
00:59:52Okay, what's the friend's name? Why don't you just go by the name the jamaican?
00:59:56He says that he met the jamaican while you know driving his cab
01:00:01They kicked it off pretty cool because they had similar lineage. When was the last time you let him borrow your phone?
01:00:06back in december
01:00:08Matter of fact in 27
01:00:10We finally tell deshaun the reason we're there. So we're working a murder that happened on that day
01:00:14December 27th a man named wali muhammad. Yeah, you tell me
01:00:22This is huge this brother just gave up the tapes on somebody that's a friend of his
01:00:28He confessed for the guy we've yet to meet and have yet to identify
01:00:32Tell me everything that jamaican said exactly
01:00:36He just said something about some money. That's all I know
01:00:40Do you know if the jamaican carries a gun?
01:00:43Yeah, one tree 57
01:00:45357
01:00:47Now, isn't that the same caliber of bullet that we found in the fixed pocket? Yeah
01:00:51We're like bam. That's it. We got 357
01:00:55Shell casings on our scene
01:00:57All these pieces are coming together right now. Okay. Do you know where the jamaican lives?
01:01:02No
01:01:03But colleen might he doesn't know exactly where he is, but he does have the address
01:01:09For a girlfriend of jamaican named colleen, thanks for your time. Thank you, man
01:01:13We want to get to colleen's house the girlfriend and who knows maybe the jamaican will be there
01:01:22She actually lives at the corner of flat shows and boulder crest not far like literally a stone's throw from our crime scene
01:01:33We don't know what we're gonna find
01:01:36You know, we could be walking right into the lion's den
01:01:48We're hot on the trail of wali muhammad's killer a man known as the jamaican
01:01:54We speak to a guy that's actually friends with the jamaican and he tells us the jamaican told him he did the murder
01:02:01Okay, do you know where the jamaican lives? No, but colleen might we get an address for where the jamaican's girlfriend lives
01:02:08So we're headed over there, but we don't know what to expect
01:02:13Quinn and I gotta be careful because we may be walking into a dangerous situation shooters and killers many times hide out the girlfriend's house
01:02:24Colleen yeah
01:02:26We're detectives with apd
01:02:28But we get right to business ask colleen, do you know where the jamaican is is he around is he inside?
01:02:34She's like, no, I haven't seen him in a long time. Okay, so he's your boyfriend, right was
01:02:39Not anymore
01:02:41He's not here. Y'all can come inside and check
01:02:44Where is he?
01:02:45I don't know for real, of course, you know the million dollar question all along has been who is the jamaican?
01:02:52We ask her that I don't know his real name in my mind. I'm not yet, right?
01:02:56Okay, you've been dating this guy for years and you don't know his name but we play along with it
01:03:00You know
01:03:01Jamaica stopped by here. She tells us on the day of the murder the jamaican actually showed up unannounced at her house
01:03:08He said he lost a gun and wanted my help finding him
01:03:13Murder weapon, right without question. That's our 357
01:03:17Missing handgun from the crime scene back on boulder crest where?
01:03:22In the woods what colleen is saying is that he dropped this murder weapon running to her house after he killed our victim
01:03:30Did you find it? No
01:03:32She actually went into the woods with him and spent an hour looking for the gun. They couldn't find it
01:03:36Did he tell you anything else about the murder?
01:03:39No, she says eventually a friend of the jamaicans a guy named cyrus hugley showed up and picked him up
01:03:46And she hadn't seen him since thank you. Now. We got colleen expanding our roll call
01:03:51We gotta go find cyrus hugley and see if he tells us the truth
01:04:04We finally get a bead on our guy cyrus hugley he agrees to come in and give a formal statement
01:04:10So we're delighted. What can you tell us about the dude that you picked up from colleen's grip?
01:04:15You mean dredd?
01:04:17On the day of the murder our guy cyrus says he gave a lift an actual ride to a guy
01:04:24He knows his dread. I guess he from jamaica
01:04:27Dredd has got to be jamaican. It's got to be the same person. Where'd you take him?
01:04:31I only took him to the fast food joint. Okay, he tell you about the murder
01:04:35murder hell nah
01:04:37Said the jamaican didn't say a word about it. It was cool as a cucumber
01:04:41I haven't seen him for a while until a few days ago when I was chilling with my friend kb
01:04:47He said the jamaican knocked on the door when kb opened the door the jamaican produces a handgun. It robs him right there
01:04:54Can you have kb give us a call? I sure can do that
01:04:58Thank you for your time. Thank you, sir
01:05:00Great day
01:05:04Now five minutes later my phone rings the last case it's kb
01:05:08He's calling me to talk about this robbery that he was the victim of from the jamaican
01:05:13So what happened don't put a gun in my face and stole $800 in cash and a gold necklace from me you tell the cops
01:05:20Nah, man kb doesn't want to file a police report even with us
01:05:24I mean, he's just gonna keep it ruthless just like people do in the street. Okay, how can we get in touch with you?
01:05:30You can come find me
01:05:32Kb is calling from a borrowed cell phone. So he doesn't even have a number to give us for contact purposes. Come on
01:05:39And he said he drives an old cadillac and always hangs around moorland and flat shows he'll be easy to find
01:05:51Out of nowhere we get an anonymous tip that the jamaican has another girlfriend
01:05:55That lives on panola road over in dekalb county
01:05:58Our next step was we look back at the phone records when the jamaican made phone calls on the shan's phone
01:06:05On the day of the murder we found calls from a female by the name of patricia fox
01:06:10She has an address in lithonia, which is not far from panola road. This seemed way too close to be a coincidence
01:06:20We go out to lithonia who we think is the jamaican's other girlfriend clearly she's a little older trisha
01:06:27Yes
01:06:29We want to talk to you about your boyfriend the jamaican she says you must be looking for my daughter melissa
01:06:34She was dating a jamaican guy. So now we know we're in the right spot. I didn't approve of the relationship
01:06:40We'd love to talk to your daughter
01:06:42melissa
01:06:43Just so happens she was home. So we asked can we speak to her? What's your boyfriend's name?
01:06:49Nathaniel pain and we aren't together anymore this former girlfriend melissa just unlocked our investigation
01:06:57We now know the jamaican is nathaniel pain
01:07:01Describe it was like five nine in his early 40s. When did you last see him?
01:07:08Not since the middle of january
01:07:10I really don't know where he is. I would tell you
01:07:14Here's my card
01:07:17Call me if you see him
01:07:18We think we have some good information. We got nathaniel pain. So we leave melissa at her house. We head back to the office
01:07:26So
01:07:31I'm on hold with ins you get anything
01:07:35On this guy in the database
01:07:37We sent a request to ins to check in their records that may show anything they have on a jamaican coming to our country. Yeah
01:07:44There's no records for nathaniel pain
01:07:47Okay. Thanks. We're back to where we were when we started with just a nickname of the jamaican. They don't tell you vinny
01:07:54He played her we're thinking nathaniel pain may be just a name that he gave melissa drug dealers lie all the time
01:08:00Nathaniel pain may just be another alias that he's going by search the database for dredd
01:08:05You know dredd if you type in dredd in any metropolitan police department's database, you're gonna get hundreds of hits
01:08:12People who have dredd locks or a dredd style hair usually go by that nickname
01:08:18damn
01:08:20Okay, try cross-referencing with southeast atlanta
01:08:26That's when we make an incredible discovery
01:08:29Oh, yo, we got a hit baby. I don't believe this. This is happening again
01:08:39Describe it's like five nine in his early 40s
01:08:42We finally have a name for wali muhammad's killer after nearly two months into our investigation
01:08:49We've identified the person known as a jamaican as being nathaniel pain
01:08:54There's nothing on this guy in the database
01:08:57We've been searching this name endlessly, you know working trying to figure it out
01:09:01It may not even be him search the database for dredd show. We got a hit baby
01:09:06I see the initials kb. It's a robbery, but I remember kb didn't report the robbery. Yo, did kb lie to us?
01:09:13Not technically when I look at the date
01:09:16It's a whole new robbery the jamaican aka dredd robbed kb for a second time. So it happened again
01:09:24Yeah, but this time he filed a report
01:09:27Okay, so he knocked over the same guy twice
01:09:30in a matter of days
01:09:31This joker is doing things that are uncharacteristic of people in the city, you know after they do a murder
01:09:37He's burning bridges as he goes he may be packing bags to leave town we gotta act fast
01:09:44That was 12 hours ago
01:09:46Yeah, it just happened. It's fresh kb said he hangs out where?
01:09:51More than the flat show the jamaican is still here and we need to go see kb because he may know where the jamaican is
01:09:57That's right
01:09:59So
01:10:05We roll over to flat shows in moorland we see a old beat up crappy cadillac and it's kb sitting right there
01:10:13Hey kb
01:10:15We'll haul at you
01:10:20All right, so what happened last night
01:10:22This girl, I know tina called me last night wanting me to come to this place up in kirkwood
01:10:26He's known tina for a while
01:10:28So, you know, he's not thinking anything of it. He shows up over in kirkwood
01:10:32Knocks on the door and there's dread again with a gun in his hand and robs him of his money again
01:10:38It got me good man
01:10:40Robbed me just like last time this sounds like a setup and that's exactly what kb felt
01:10:44He couldn't believe that dread has targeted him twice already. So he's mad
01:10:49I had to call the cops on him. What's the address where this happened?
01:10:5390 roger street
01:10:55All right. Yeah, we got to do
01:10:57We're still in real time as far as our hunt down for the jamaican known as nathaniel pain we're hoping he's still there
01:11:12I'm driving up to the residence and me and vince are looking at a female right on the property of 90 roger street
01:11:20She's at the mailbox and she's not concentrating on our business. She's concentrating on us. I think we have a lookout
01:11:26We know
01:11:32Vince is gonna follow behind this female
01:11:35So I run around to the back, excuse me, miss
01:11:38Just to make sure if the jamaican is there he didn't run out the back door. Hold up a second. Let me talk to you
01:11:44Where you going something in my gut told me this guy's probably inside the house
01:11:48And she's trying to figure out what to do watch yourself. I said hold up a second
01:11:53Can you hear me?
01:11:54Stop, she wouldn't turn around. I got my partner on my radio. I can hear if anything goes south
01:12:03When she got to the door
01:12:04That's when she turned around to see exactly where I was and the hair in the back of my neck stood up
01:12:09I knew something wasn't right
01:12:12And as the door opens up not two feet inside the doorway do I see
01:12:17A man just frozen staring at me and at that moment. I knew that was the jamaican
01:12:24Let me see he immediately turned around and started running stop against all training
01:12:30Against everything that I know I should
01:12:33Not do I ran into that house
01:12:37Can't let him go
01:12:37I pulled my gun out and I needed two hands on this thing because if I had to unload and reload another clip
01:12:42I was ready to go
01:12:44I'm at the back door. I don't hear anything. Stop don't move
01:12:48Let me see your hand my gun is punched out and i'm screaming commands at this guy to show me his hands
01:12:54I cannot see his right hand. Let me see your hands if I don't see your hands
01:13:01All hell broke loose and I just hear all this screaming last chance. Let me see those hands
01:13:06So now i'm face to face with this killer
01:13:08Who in my mind is armed and he is going to shoot me and kill me never felt that let me see your hand
01:13:15My focus was on his right hand and I could see it moving and all of this is happening in a split second
01:13:21Last time we tracked down wali muhammad's killer
01:13:25nathaniel pain
01:13:27When he took off running
01:13:29I knew I couldn't let him go
01:13:30This guy has killed one person at least has robbed the same guy twice and who knows what other damage he's done
01:13:36Finally see your hands, but now i'm in a life or death situation. This is like slow motion
01:13:43Let me see your hand i'm thinking i'm gonna get shot or shoot somebody because I certainly don't want to die
01:13:47And I don't want to take a life
01:13:50He knew at that moment. I was about to shoot him and I was
01:13:54Please don't shoot boss on the ground get on the ground nice and easy
01:14:00Had he not pulled that hand out. We may not have a case here today. Renee over here
01:14:06But thank god he showed all 10 fingers and he allowed me to handcuff him safely and true to form
01:14:12He had a nine millimeter tucked in his waistband
01:14:15You got it. Yes
01:14:20That's one of the chambers
01:14:22He was probably going to take the chance of shooting a government official
01:14:25And he just changed his mind whether it was god or just good sense
01:14:30I'm, glad he made the right decision. What's your name?
01:14:33Daniel and albion
01:14:36Confirmation that this indeed
01:14:38Is our homicide suspect also known as the jamaican. It's now to have a sit down. We're hoping this guy's gonna talk to
01:14:51Me and my partner know he's doing the interview alone. So you agree to waive your right to counsel?
01:14:58Yes, he wants to talk to me and without hesitation
01:15:01I start to ask him questions about the wali muhammad homicide. I shot him
01:15:07I admit it
01:15:09We have nothing to hide
01:15:11Okay, walk me through it. It all started because money was missing from the house
01:15:16They thought I was stealing
01:15:18And they were going to kill me and it was all going down before at the end of the year
01:15:25And now on december 27th wali muhammad shows up at the trap house
01:15:30He's already on high alert
01:15:33He's always carrying his piece. He's ready because that's the tool of the trade if you're a drug dealer
01:15:40I was scared
01:15:41I thought he was out to get me
01:15:43So wali walks in
01:15:45And says he wants my gun
01:15:47What gun the 357 I bought from wali?
01:15:50There was a controversy about the gun that he actually purchased from the victim that he didn't finish paying for it
01:15:55So then it became heated
01:15:58And that's supported by the witness eugene who's in the driveway who hears shouting
01:16:06I told him it's mine
01:16:09I'm, not giving it to him
01:16:11Our victim posturing according to nathaniel pain that he was going for a gun
01:16:17So he reacted he pulled out his own weapon and shot the victim first
01:16:22He
01:16:24He was going to kill me
01:16:26That's why I shot him. How many times did you pull the trigger? I know we were scared
01:16:32It was self-defense
01:16:35Now nathaniel
01:16:36I appreciate you telling me what happened, but I want you to know wali didn't have a gun
01:16:42Nathaniel pain says that he saw our victim reaching under his shirt as if he's pulling a gun out
01:16:48But when we recall back when we processed the crime scene our victim didn't have a gun
01:16:53Nathaniel pain killed our victim wali muhammad. I mean that's not even in dispute
01:16:58The rest is up to a jury. Let's get you to boogie. Come on
01:17:03Thank you
01:17:04You treated me with respect and honor
01:17:07He says, you know, i've never really had a conversation like I just did with any police officer ever in my entire life
01:17:14And you seem like a nice guy and I said, okay, well, thank you. Why are you telling me this?
01:17:19I'm glad I didn't kill you at the house
01:17:22This is a man basically telling me
01:17:25That he was going to murder me
01:17:27And that now that he knows who I am, he would have felt bad about it
01:17:32Thanks for not going for your gun. Come on
01:17:36The most bizarre conversation i've ever had in my entire police career
01:17:41Nathaniel pain is charged with the murder of wali muhammad
01:17:49Nathaniel pain was taken to the dekalb county jail and fingerprints
01:17:52We ran his prints and found out there's a match in the national database for a warrant for murder out of cleveland, ohio
01:18:00We found out that this case involved a man shot to death in 2001 in the city of cleveland
01:18:05The suspect in that case was a jamaican man named calvin morrison
01:18:09The cleveland homicide sent us a picture of calvin morrison and sure enough it was nathaniel pain
01:18:15It's clear. This guy's got many aliases. So who knows what his real name is?
01:18:22So 2005 nathaniel pain goes on trial in fulton county for the murder of our victim wali muhammad
01:18:29This trial goes on for over a week and when the jury comes back with a verdict
01:18:33It's not guilty
01:18:35We know for a fact that nathaniel pain pulled the trigger and killed our victim wali muhammad but his self-defense
01:19:05Foreign
01:19:35So
01:20:00Come on
01:20:02Foreign
01:20:32Foreign
01:21:02Foreign
01:21:32Foreign
01:21:48Come on
01:22:02Foreign
01:22:21Foreign
