00:00With regard to the situation that the Bruins found themselves in on Friday afternoon,
00:08I thought it was interesting to hear Don Sweeney, their general manager, step up on Saturday
00:16and shoulder a lot of the blame for that on himself. Here is what Don Sweeney said.
00:23Obviously the captain in Brad Marchand, that one goes back a long ways for me and cuts
00:30deeper than really any player that I've had the privilege of getting to know and
00:36watch thrive and become a hall of famer and one of the greatest Bruins ever.
00:42So a difficult day from that standpoint personally and professionally. It's
00:46making some very difficult decisions and I want to wish each and every one of them well. They're
00:49going to teams that we're jealous of. We've been in the same situation with those teams.
00:54So they're loading up and had we done our jobs, if I had done my job appropriately
00:59starting there, we would be adding like we have in 10 previous years.
01:05Okay. So are you happy with that? He said if he had done his job appropriately,
01:12then they wouldn't be in this situation. I don't know if you can pin it entirely on him.
01:19There was an Emily Kaplan report yesterday, which detailed the fact that Don Sweeney and Cam Neely,
01:30I'm assuming had to go to ownership and beg for them when it came to the offer that they were
01:38giving Brad Marchand to get an extra year to get the third year on there. So, which I mean, again,
01:45here we are with the meddling owners in things. So it was ownership that didn't want to pay
01:50Marchand? So they, according to her report, in order to even offer three years, like ownership,
01:57I guess, wanted them to do two years. All right. I don't know about the AAV. I don't think she
02:03knows or anybody knows about the AAV part. They were just far apart is the only report.
02:07Far apart on that. But when it came to getting a third year that they had to march upstairs
02:13and ask the chairman or, or, or son of chairman, uh, if they could do a third year or not like
02:20that is that's their job. That's that's Kim Neely and Don Sweeney's job. I talked to chairman
02:27every day. Yeah. Let them cook. Like it's ridiculous that they have to go up and ask
02:32ownership about that. It's it's. And I don't care. It doesn't matter who the player is.
02:38We can argue till we're blue in the face about whether you wanted Brad Marchand to finish his
02:43career here or not. I think a lot of people did. Um, I know, I know Mike Milbury did. We'll talk
02:48to Mike Milbury on Thursday, but Mike Milbury thought he had earned that opportunity to finish
02:53his career here. I don't know how you, but I'm a former athlete, but I feel like ownership's like,
02:58all right, you just, I mean, I get that you're the president and the GM, but you still have to
03:05run things by ownership when it comes to, you know, contract to the length of a term of a
03:11contract for Brad Marchand out of here. Well, what if Marchand said I want five years? Are they
03:16supposed to just get the deal done? No, but that's what they agreed on three. Yeah. It was just the
03:22money. So, so then, but that's the thing. So it wasn't the years, then it was the money. Yeah.
03:26Three years they had agreed on that was the right. So how much money did he want? Yeah. They
03:30agreed after those guys had to go up there and beg them to do it. Right. Right. It makes a lot
03:34more sense as to why they treated Marchand like he had a, an entirely no trade clause at the
03:40deadline and allowed him to pick his destination. Cause they're like, we don't want to deal you,
03:44but we feel, we feel like we have to. I think that, that they did him a favor. I think Don,
03:49Don Sweeney and Cam Neely did him a favor by working a deal with Florida. I mean, do you think
03:55in, if they had their druthers, uh, since that was the word that Don Sweeney used a few weeks ago,
04:01he would be going to the Florida Panthers. Like, no, you mean Don Sweeney, but then people,
04:08I'm kind of confused on how you're thinking. I go ahead because I thought everybody, you're
04:13confused a lot on this show, but I thought everybody in their mama wanted Marshawn gone,
04:18but now we're all like, well, they should have just gave him the extra year. So let's say they
04:23would have said, all right, here's a three. I don't think everybody in their mama wanted him
04:26gone. I think, uh, I think Curtis put up a poll. That's one poll though. Like I,
04:32what are you have been happy? My shit, my pole, would you have been hashed? Cause he's making
04:366.2 million a year. Let's say you, they go, all right, Marshawn's coming back three years,
04:4112 million. Yeah. Again, it's like, it's not my hair. I don't know why there's all this.
04:50I think in order to blow it up, which is what they had to do, they had to trade Marshawn. I
04:55don't think they got the value for him. And shine pointed out in his lead this morning
04:59that it may be because he's going to be out for a longer period than anybody thought.
05:04But I don't think they got the value that they could have got for Brad Marshawn.
05:07I think they did him a favor and traded him where he wanted to go. And I think it's because
05:12they could not get the chairman to agree to a reasonable number on a three-year deal.
05:18But who would want him for three years and 12 million? I wouldn't you wouldn't Courtney's the
05:24only one I, we know Curtis wouldn't. I just think like they've people pay guys at the end of their
05:30career all the time, probably more than what they deserve. Like to say that they 12 million over
05:36three years for Brad Marshawn is outrageous. It's not, it's not that I'm saying it's outrageous.
05:42Nobody wanted him. They want to rebuild this team. And by you bringing Brad
05:47Marshawn back, we were the only two, I said, they won't do it because they didn't have enough
05:51courage to do it. They proved me wrong. But if they would have resigned Brad Marshawn
05:55to, if we're sitting here today and there's an extension for Marshawn three years and $12
06:00million people, the majority of people would be like, what the hell were the Bruins doing?
06:07Yeah. But you got butcher grass was reporting that we're speculating that they offered two years,
06:14$3 million a year. Okay. He wanted three years or a little more money for two years.
06:21Okay. I mean, to get Brad Marshawn at three plus million a year for a couple of years.
06:27Well, that's what I said. That was very reasonable. That was my haircut when we talked about
06:31it. Yeah. It's very, very reasonable to me. But then, but then shine people and Greg would have
06:38been, why are you bringing this guy back? Well, I think it's, it's, it's hard because in that
06:43situation, we never know. We would never would have known what the return would have been for
06:46Marshawn, but knowing what the return is, I would have been fine with a two year, $9 million
06:51contract or whatever. I don't know what the money is, but like two under 10, fine. That's great.
06:55That's cool. Like that's, you're only getting a second round pick. You got the same by trading
07:00Trent Frederick and Max Jones. That's the problem is he didn't get any value for him. And that's why
07:07I think that there's, there must be some frustration on the part of Don Sweeney.
07:13And so he said, fine, then if you're not going to pay him, we can't make a deal with Brad Marchand.
07:18We're going to trade him somewhere that he wants to go as a favorite of the player.
07:21But that's, that's just me speculating.
