00:00Backboards used in the past were surprisingly fragile.
00:02Since the rim was bolted directly to the glass, a powerful dunk could shatter the entire backboard,
00:07creating a serious safety risk for players.
00:09So modern backboards were designed to absorb the force of a dunk without transferring it
00:13to the glass.
00:13But could these new backboards really withstand anything?
00:16That's exactly what Sports Science set out to test.
00:18They brought in Amari Stoudemire to put the backboard to the ultimate test.
00:22He threw down dunk after dunk using all his strength.
00:24The highest record was 1,000 pounds of force, but the backboard remained completely intact.
00:28But they didn't stop there.
00:30To push the test even further, they dropped a piano from above,
00:32hitting the exact spot where players dunk.
00:35The impact was 6,000 pounds of force, but once again, the backboard didn't break.
