Mark Carney wins race to replace Canada's Trudeau  Former central banker Mark Carney won the race to become leader of Canada's ruling Liberal Party and will succeed Justin Trudeau as prime minister, official results showed on Sunday, March 9.  Carney will take over at a tumultuous time in Canada, which is in the midst of a trade war with longtime ally the United States under President Donald Trump and must hold a general election soon.  Carney, 59, took 86% of votes cast to beat former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland in a contest in which just under 152,000 party members voted. 00:00My government will put into action our plan to build a stronger economy,

00:05to create new trading relationships with reliable trading partners,

00:10and to secure our borders.

00:14There's someone who's trying to do the opposite.

00:16There's someone who's trying to weaken our economy.

00:19Donald Trump. Donald Trump.

00:27And Donald Trump, as we know, has put, as the Prime Minister just said,

00:33unjustified tariffs on what we build, on what we sell, on how we make a living.

00:41He's attacking Canadian families, workers, and businesses,

00:45and we cannot let him succeed.

00:50And we won't. We won't.

00:53The Canadian government has rightly retaliated, and is rightly retaliating,

00:58with our own tariffs that will have maximum impact in the United States

01:02and minimum impact here in Canada.

01:06And my government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect.

01:11The Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our country.

01:19Think about it.

01:21If they succeeded, they would destroy our way of life.

01:28In America, health care is a big business.

01:32In Canada, it is a right.

01:35America is not Canada.

01:37And Canada never, ever will be part of America in any way, shape, or form.

02:00We didn't ask for this fight.

02:02We didn't ask for this fight.

02:04But Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves.

02:09So the Americans, they should make no mistake.

02:12In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win.

02:16So Donald Trump thinks, thinks he can weaken us with his plan to divide and conquer.

02:25Pierre Poilievre's plan will leave us divided and ready to be conquered.

02:33Because a person who worships at the altar of Donald Trump will kneel before him,

02:39not stand up to him.

02:41I know that these are dark days.

02:47Dark days brought on by a country we can no longer trust.

02:52We are getting over the shock.

02:55But let us never forget the lessons.

02:59We have to look after ourselves.

03:03And we have to look out for each other.

03:08We need to pull together.

03:12When we come together, when we come together, we build things that last.

03:17Because we are Canada Strong.

03:22Vive le Canada.

03:24Merci tout le monde.

03:37And now, as Canadians face, from our neighbour, an existential challenge, an economic crisis,

03:47Canadians are showing exactly what we are made of.

03:54And make no mistake, this is a nation-defining moment.

04:12Democracy is not a given.

04:16Freedom is not a given.

04:19Even Canada is not a given.

04:23None of those happen by accident.

04:26None of them will continue without effort.

04:31It takes courage.

04:33It takes sacrifice.

04:36It takes hope and hard work.

04:39As your leader, as your Prime Minister, I have done my level best each and every single day

04:56to help build a country that stays worthy of all Canadians.

05:01I've done it for Xavier, for Ella Grace and Hadrian.

05:06And I've done it for your kids too.

05:10And I've done it with you.

05:12And although you'll always find me alongside you, cheering along,

05:17their future and your future is now in your hands.
