00:00Adam falls scheduled for release on March 27th 2025 and it's going to be available on pretty much everything but the switch.
00:07Notably, it's also accessible to Xbox Game Pass subscribers on launch day.
00:11Adam Falls is a survival action game from a billion developments set in a British post-apocalyptic wonderland or wasteland.
00:18I guess it depends on which side you draw your entertainment from.
00:20Drawing its own inspiration from the real life 1957 wind scale nuclear incident,
00:25the game reimagines that event, plunging players into a quarantined North England teeming with mystery and danger and sets you out on your own.
00:33Five years after everything went straight to hell, Adam Falls tosses you into the middle of a radioactive nightmare from England's Lake District.
00:39And it's not the peaceful countryside you might find on a friggin' postcard.
00:42It's a full-blown quarantine zone, crawling with bad guys, danger, and some radiation.
00:47You wake up with no idea what's going on. It's a mess.
00:50You have no memory, no clue who you are, and the only way forward is to figure out what the hell happened
00:54and why you're actually there.

01:01We'll be talking more about this game, diving even deeper than this actual video does.
01:06The game isn't necessarily post-apocalyptic in a world sense,
01:09but that's like saying that you don't care that someone else's house burned down just because yours is still there.
01:13And what matters is you're here now.
01:15You have to go through Adam Falls' world, which is set roughly between 1950 but possibly before 2099,
01:22because you have old-ass guns, but then you have a robot careening through town
01:25telling everybody to watch their shit or it'll push it back in for them.
01:28It's a unique combination for a first-person shooter survival game.
01:31And does it work?
01:33Well, in the preview, I would say yes and sometimes no.
01:37I got to spend three hours with the game, exploring, fighting, sneaking, streaking,
01:40and stabbing my way through a countryside.

01:50First up, and even from the moment on, I jumped into Adam Fall with the idea
01:55that this might be something that I played before,
01:57at least in some ways like a lot of other survival games.
02:00And that did met out quite quickly, constantly jostling different items,
02:04different equipment with a heavy restriction on inventory,
02:07as well as a heightened sense of danger in the game versus your typical Fallout game,
02:11but definitely less so than, say, Tarkov.
02:14Now, I'm not saying that every single time you dip your nuts into some creek water,
02:17you're going to end up coming out with something,
02:19but you do have to watch various elements, such as bleeding on some of the weapons
02:24and a heart rate meter that plays out a lot like a stamina meter
02:27in games that are based on that.
02:29As I made my way through the brand new location I was dropped into,
02:33imagine a semi-open-world hub-based kind of title,
02:36where you go into particular locations and they might be quite vast,
02:39but they all do remind you a great deal of Sniper Elite and the titles in the Sniper Elite series,
02:45meaning when you go out, some of the areas are large and open and wide,
02:48and then others funnel you through discrete linear locations.
02:52For example, subways, a particular castle, a village, underground tunnels, somebody's cellar.
02:56You sneak in behind somebody's back to squeeze through a gap to get past them
03:00or sneak up behind them to kill them.
03:02The first thing to discuss is the quest system.
03:05They don't call it quests, they call it leads.
03:07Leads move you around the world, sometimes subtly like a whisper in the dark alley,
03:10other times like a five-year-old's frigging Christmas list after binge-watching infomercials,
03:15meaning completely chaotic and almost borderline incomprehensible.
03:19And I actually sort of dug that.
03:21Somehow, you end up trying to find the right direction
03:24by reading different information that you get within the game world
03:27without an exact quest checkbox list.
03:30They push you toward hints, and hints push you towards new quest locations,
03:34lost people, or in some cases, gloriously frustrating dead ends.
03:38Now, some people might bounce off the idea of this cryptic breadcrumb
03:42kind of guiding you through a journey.
03:44Nevertheless, for me, I liked it.
03:46There's something satisfying about piecing together half-heard conversation scribble notes
03:50and the occasional gut feeling while scanning the overworld
03:53and trying to make sense of what you think you might need to do next by looking at your notes.
03:58And most of these you've found because they're torn-up papers.
04:01Apparently, in Atomfall, nobody respects books.
04:03It's like every citizen went full madman conspiracy theorist,
04:06ripping pages out of books, rewriting their journals in the margins,
04:09or just straight-up confessing illegal deeds on loose scraps of paper,
04:13then leaving them all over the place.
04:15Mercifully, the bad guys seem to have collective amnesia
04:18about the existence of the friggin' written language,
04:20so those notes remain untouched, just waiting for you to stumble on them,
04:23in the open, on a desk, stuck to a wall with a knife, whatever.
04:27And as you go through the areas, you listen to people, you grab these,
04:30you consistently try to complete each particular lead to its end.
04:35Take this for example.
04:36I found an old voice recording from someone who's endowed helicopter
04:39when something major went wrong.
04:41The recording hints that they may have traveled to a nearby village,
04:44so I decided to gear up and head towards that village.
04:46But along the way, I came across a torn-up note in a burned-out shack.
04:50Something scribbled in what looked like desperation,
04:52maybe a mention of stopping for the night.
04:55And just like that, the game reinforced the idea
04:57that I was probably on the right track.
04:59The more of those pieces I found and gathered,
05:01the more tangible the trail became,
05:03almost like you're building a case file in a way.
05:05A detective chasing ghosts that are actually people
05:08who might be dead through the ruins, across the plains,
05:11through an enemy base, and then you stop right in the middle,
05:14turn around and think to yourself,
05:15how in the fuck did that old lady from a helicopter crash
05:18who was hurt get through all of this same shit?
05:20Then you shrug and decide, ah, who cares?
05:22And continue on with the game.
05:23Adam Falls Ride is one that you just sort of know you bought the ticket for.
05:27And it's okay, even though slightly weird at times.
05:30It's a system that makes you feel like you're always uncovering
05:32a little bit of story rather than just following a glowing waypoint.
05:36And that, to me, makes sense.
05:37Now, during my time through the game, though,
05:39I didn't really run into that issue at least too much.
05:42Not in a way that felt frustrating.
05:43A lot of the objectives also played out in a familiar way.
05:46Help someone in need, track down a missing person,
05:49chase after a cryptic clue.
05:50They all did feel grounded in that setting, though.
05:52Take the case of the helicopter passenger I mentioned earlier.
05:55That threat alone felt like it could spiral
05:57into something quite big and rather unexpected.
06:00And that's the hook of Adam Fall.
06:02You never quite know which story beats will fully unravel.
06:05Regardless of this, or because of this,
06:07you're going to find yourself going through open areas,
06:09going through linear locations, and a good deal of the time
06:11you're going to be sneaking around and trying to keep yourself safe.
06:14This can be done in many different ways,
06:15including situations that I find to be quite intriguing
06:19in how they play out, like threatening somebody with a gun
06:22and they don't know if there's any bullets in it
06:24and you might get an enemy to run off.
06:26So if you meet up with somebody, you have a gun and they don't,
06:28there's a chance that you could send them running.
06:30I think that's awesome, that possibility there
06:32to have a little bit more of a gray area interaction is awesome.
06:35You can also go in and do combat, or you can sneak.
06:38Now, stealth itself was pretty basic,
06:40with you sneaking around in one of two ways,
06:42crouched or just walking slowly.
06:44There was also the ability for you to crawl under particular areas
06:47like a broken fence or beneath a bookshelf,
06:49but it was contextual to those places,
06:51so don't assume you're going to be going full prone,
06:54like a sniper game.
06:55The sneaking really didn't have a lot of indicators of level,
06:58simply telling if you were hidden or not.
07:01And that might be something that as I continue to play,
07:03we get more of or discover more of.
07:05Sneaking around also allows for you to get up behind an enemy
07:08and take them out.
07:09Or I could have just walked past them.
07:11The ability to have some social stealth is also here.
07:13For example, when you go into a village,
07:15everybody allowed me inside as long as I didn't cause any problems.
07:18As I walk past people, particularly guards,
07:21will say things like,
07:22I don't know if I trust you and keep an eye on you more than others.
07:24And as long as you have your weapons put away,
07:26you're pretty much in no problem.
07:28If you pull the weapons out,
07:29everybody doesn't instantly attack you in most places,
07:32but you instantly become the focus of everybody's attention.
07:35And sneaking also comes into play when you're trespassing in the game.
07:39For example, particular factions own some of the places.
07:42So you might go into a spot and you're completely fine.
07:44And then you might enter a secondary location
07:46and immediately you get warned that you're trespassing.
07:49And usually you see a glyph on a wall or something like that.
07:52When you're trespassing, they're on you pretty much in a second.
07:54So you have to be very careful.
07:55Speaking of the AI, when you were sneaking, it was fine.
07:58It wasn't great. It didn't really flank too much in combat either.
08:01It was a pretty good shot, I would say.
08:03Far away enough that it could hit me if I was standing out in the open
08:07despite the difficulty I was on.
08:09When it came to sneaking, it noticed me most of the time
08:12if I was out and about.
08:13But when you're in those places where it marks you as hidden,
08:16you truly are.
08:17But as you move around, you're able to put different weapons
08:19in and out of a hot equipped section, as well as your inventory.
08:23Being able to switch between those didn't take very long.
08:25So if you want to go bow and arrow, to a shotgun, to a rifle,
08:28to a pistol, and back and forth,
08:29I certainly wouldn't call your character quick or slick,
08:32but it works pretty well.
08:34Enemies also did run and hide in some fights near locations
08:38where they had the ability to go to cover.
08:40Ferals, though, these are radioactive creatures
08:42that you have to take down quickly or they can poison you.
08:44Attack with the damn quickness.
08:46They do not care about anything,
08:47and they'll just run straight towards you and hit you.
08:49And if they do enough times, you get poisoned.
08:51So you have to watch out for some of the creatures in the game.
08:53Atomfall also rounds out the combination of stealth
08:56and gunplay and social interaction and skills
08:58with a basic crafting system.
09:00Grenades, Molotov cocktails, bandages to stop bleeding, and so on.
09:03It's bog standard stuff for survival games,
09:05with each item progressively doing more.
09:07For instance, a food item heals a small amount of damage over time,
09:10a bandage heals more and also stops bleeding,
09:12and a med kit is a one-stop shop back to hero land.
09:15The game doesn't really have an ownership system
09:17that I could find outside of the aforementioned
09:19trespassing urine deep shit system.
09:21So if there's a reason for you to pick something up,
09:23you probably should.
09:24While I didn't get to see the full game,
09:26I did get to see how the graphics look,
09:28at least in these parts.
09:29And graphically, there is no denying the game
09:31absolutely looks like Sniper Elite.
09:33It's got the same sort of off-kilter filtering effect
09:35that can go on.
09:36And in particular, the texture work and the locations
09:38had something that was very familiar.
09:40So imagine a mix of Fallout and Sniper Elite,
09:43and you're halfway there.
09:44However, there's no over-the-top flashy bullet vision
09:47in this game or anything like that.
09:48Takedowns themselves are fairly basic.
09:50You're not a character out there doing Krav Maga.
09:52You're just out there actually trying to survive.
09:54Taking a cricket bat to a dude's face
09:56doesn't require deafness.
09:57It requires death.
09:59There are also some issues, just basic,
10:01that I saw here and there with some performance.
10:03But the world itself was interesting to move around with.
10:06It had a lot of mystique to it as well.
10:08A little bit Doctor Who, a little bit Fallout.
10:10And I like just the general feel.
10:12I also like the robot design,
10:14but I've always been a fan of this timeline
10:16and these ideas of robot design in those games.
10:18And I was playing on the PC.
10:19The sound work is also decent,
10:21with environmental sound like a creek running by
10:23or the wind blowing through some rafters
10:25to get the feel of the environment,
10:27and solidified.
10:28If there's one thing that Atomfall absolutely nails, though,
10:31it is the voice.
10:32Not just in terms of performance,
10:34though the voice actors absolutely deliver,
10:36but in how they inject life into the game's eerie,
10:38post-apocalyptic setting.
10:39One particular character stood out for me,
10:41one of the first ones I met,
10:43which is basically imagining Harry Potter's Professor McGonagall
10:46if she were younger,
10:47possibly a little unhinged
10:48and carrying the kind of quiet menace that makes you wonder
10:50if helping her is a good idea
10:52or the biggest mistake you'll make.
10:53She gave me a quest,
10:54and our back and forth was surprisingly engaging
10:57for a game like this.
10:59The dialogue system doesn't just throw you
11:01into bland, emotionless choices either.
11:03Each response has a particular flavor beside it,
11:06a feeling attached to it.
11:07You can be things like cynical, scared, blunt,
11:09or just downright dismissive.
11:11And the NPCs react somewhat accordingly.
11:13One thing I did notice as I was playing,
11:15there's no real skill checks in any way
11:17connected to the dialogue.
11:18There's nothing about what equipment you have or anything.
11:21So the idea that you can just pick
11:22to be curious in the discussion really worked.
11:25The other thing I wanted to talk about is music.
11:27As you guys know, I love to listen to this stuff
11:29and sort of see how it builds in the game world.
11:31Adam Falls' music, intentionally lean,
11:34and that's a good thing.
11:35A game like this, steeped in that survivalism,
11:37the eerie quiet of isolation,
11:38would lose a lot if the atmosphere
11:40was consistently blasted out with music to you.
11:43It nails the feeling of solitude
11:45and a bit of creepy unease
11:47depending on what tracks are playing.
11:49So far with the preview, I can say this,
11:51if you're expecting a Fallout-style game,
11:53this is not it.
11:54The game doesn't have a bunch of attributes
11:55like you would expect in a title like that,
11:57and I'm totally okay with it.
11:58It is a bit clumsy, at least right now,
12:00but at the same time,
12:01switching between the larger areas,
12:03the village towns, going into a dam
12:04with a question of bad guys inside
12:06that are probably worshiping
12:07some kind of atomic eldritch beast
12:09that was sucking down nuclear pellets,
12:11I like the mystery there.
12:12The linear sections were very linear,
12:14but they were interesting to explore.
12:16It just depends on how it's all going to come together.
12:19It's certainly not a larger, expansive world,
12:22but the idea of doing the leads
12:24does help add mystery to a game
12:26that might feel a little one-note
12:28depending on exactly the kind of gamer that you are.
12:31Certainly people who've come off something
12:33that is heavy survival,
12:34like a Tarkov or something like that.
12:36Anyway, that's it for me.
