Health Minister praises Lagan Valley Hospital’s regional day procedure unit

00:00Well this is one of Northern Ireland's two day procedure centres, this is a relatively

00:04new development, the throughput is really high, it's addressing waiting lists which

00:08of course is the big challenge within health and social care and I just wanted to come

00:13and hear first hand from the people who are delivering this great service and to see what

00:18more we can do to help them, to help the patients.

00:22Since the day procedure unit opened, we have carried out 21,000 day case surgeries here

00:27in the unit and there's opportunity for doing more. Our staff are really keen to work together,

00:33work in partnership with other trusts and to provide this service is so important for

00:36patients.

00:37We can pool our resources in one place and try to get as much capacity as we can through

00:42the limited resources that we have and that means we can get more patients through the

00:46system and whilst for some people it does mean having to travel, it might mean a slightly

00:50shorter waiting time for the procedure.

00:52Don't think about a hospital in isolation, think of it as part of a network, not all

00:56hospitals will do everything but the hospitals that do do something will do it really, really

01:01well.

01:02So within the day procedure unit we carry out surgical procedures Monday through Friday,

01:07we also carry out endoscopy procedures which are investigations for cancer investigations.

01:13We carry those out seven days a week now, so five days a week within the trust and then

01:19we work in partnership with an insourcing provider who come in, use our facilities and

01:24we see patients Saturdays and Sundays and we are also expanding our service to go to

01:30evenings within endoscopy as well.

01:32There's real opportunity to maximise every single cater session here in Lagan Valley.

01:38Very proud of this centre, very proud of what we're doing and very proud of the staff who

01:42work here.

01:43The staff really underpin everything we do and they're a wonderful team here delivering

01:48this service.
