Trey Hendrickson has been granted permission to seek a trade, should the Commanders go out and get the Pro-Bowl DE?
Transcript
00:00Trey Hendrickson getting to the quarterback something he's done a whole lot of 35 sacks the last two years. That's 35
00:08sacks
00:0917 and a half each of the last two seasons led the NFL in sacks for Cincinnati now people sleep
00:15He was at the Saints for four years before he was in Cincinnati for four years
00:19But he was a really old rookie and I didn't know that so he is actually 30 years old
00:24He'll turn 31 at the end of next season in December. So I actually would have thought he was 28
00:28But I'm wrong. He's 30. He was a 23 year old rookie
00:32Yeah, he had that breakout season his final year and his walk here with the Saints
00:36And I think a lot of people were kind of going. Yeah, okay, buddy
00:38I'm sure that's not real Cincinnati took a leap and were rewarded 14 8 down year
00:44but 17 and a half each of the last two seasons a
00:47Whole mess of sacks for Cincinnati 57 sacks over four years. That is cleaning up now
00:53He is due to become one of the highest paid pass rushers in the NFL
00:56We just saw Max Crosby get an amount of money that obviously Trey Hendrickson is not going to get but
01:02Resetting the market to some extent for a guy who is rushing the quarterback off the edge
01:07Hendrickson's made four straight Pro Bowls. He finally made first team all pro
01:10He finished second in the defensive player of the year chase with Crosby not a hundred percent healthy
01:15You know ahead of him this past season and he hit the quarterback
01:1936 times
01:2236 is a ridiculous number. I'm gonna give you guys just a couple of
01:25Comps so that you can make that work in your head Dante Fowler the best pass rusher here
01:30We had ten and a half sacks at 14 hits on the quarterback this year
01:34Dorrance Armstrong who Washington paid about ten million dollars a year to come in from Dallas to be their top defensive end this year had
01:4214 hits on the quarterback Trey Hendrickson this past season hit the quarterback 36 times
01:49So those are you know, those are like the combined total of Washington's, you know for rushers and that's what I usually consider
01:56so one of the things that I look at an awful lot when we talk about pass rushing is quarterback hits because that means
02:00Are you in the neighborhood and whether you got the sack or not?
02:03The process was there you beat your guy you're in the backfield. You touch the quarterback
02:07Sometimes it's an extra beat and he holds the ball and you get a sack other times you go. What's wrong with John Allen?
02:12Why didn't he I'd only have three sacks. Well get 20 some quarterback hits that year you replayed again
02:16He'd have eight or nine and that's what happens the following year
02:19So usually you look at some of the league leaders and they're in the mid-20s this year
02:23He would have led the NFL in almost any other season, but Zach Allen in Denver had 40 quarterback hits, which is astounding
02:30Which is ridiculous for a guy again that only had eight and a half sacks
02:33So the point of the dude story is this is a consistent winning pass rusher
02:37Not quite on the level of that miles Garrett even Max Crosby
02:41Every play is ruining everything for you
02:43But as consistent and workmanlike a technician as they come like that is an effective pass rusher that I
02:50Was always one of the whole time when we're trying to do a long-term deal for tomorrow chase
02:53We really want to do a long-term deal for T Higgins. How are they gonna pay everybody? I think here's the answer. They're not
02:58Yeah, I use PFF for counting stats
03:01Pressures and things like that more than anything else their grades can be helpful
03:05But are subjective and so when you start talking about those
03:08I think sometimes people start covering their ears and don't want to you know
03:12Hear what you have to say
03:13But I love the counting stats on pressures and this guy has lived
03:17among the top of the league for the last couple of seasons now 30 is
03:24Probably the new 28 in terms of
03:27Available players and age in the sense that at that position you can age pretty well
03:32We've seen guys like Bruce Smith or you know, Reggie white or others, you know
03:37Play deep into their 30s and have some success
03:39I don't think it's the end of the world like we talked about if Joey Bosa had a more health
03:44Full history or even Khalil Mack who had a 17 sack season at 32 or 33
03:49It's not crazy to see a guy have a really strong season with production into his 30s
03:55So Hendrickson is someone I would be interested in but this is big game hunting
04:00This would cost draft picks. This would cost a massive cap number
04:05Now this would be your move of the offseason and maybe your move of a couple of offseasons
04:11And do you want to put all those eggs in that basket again?
04:1535 sacks over two years ain't nothing you want to look for a 17 and a half sack season in
04:20Washington's history you're going all the way back to Dexter Manley. Mm-hmm
04:23I mean those numbers don't exist in this organization's modern history. Nobody's done it. He's the real deal
04:29He's a great player and it's not like it's just sacks as we're pointing out. It's TFL's
04:33It's 35 the last two years. It's hitting the quarterback pressure
04:38Pressures like he is a real legitimate pass rusher. You look at total pressures this past season
04:45He was not at the top of the board among the edges, but he was right there below the number one spot
04:53so yeah, I
04:55Color me very intrigued Danny. Yeah pro football reference
04:58For example has him at number one pro football focus might have him at two or three
05:01The point is that's the company he's in
05:04Effective pass rusher and there's no other way around that right here adverse of the Rams wanted 89
05:10Jonathan Grenard of the
05:13Vikings 84 Trey Hendrickson third 83
05:17Same as Miles Garrett in terms of the number of times. He pressured the quarterback
05:22I want to dive in and try to find in the break here
05:25How often he's doubled and chipped because while Sam Hubbard who just retired was a really good D tackle
05:30He was a little bit of a one-man wrecking crew in terms of all pro talent on that defensive front
05:36They've brought in DJ reader and they've had some different guys over the years that have come and gone
05:39But for the most part I would imagine he's getting to work occasionally
05:44Against some doubles and getting chipped you think so and he's still putting up those numbers
05:48Which is the sign of a pretty elite player?
05:51Yeah, and this is again an offense and a team that was behind a lot
05:54They were losing and slinging it and throwing it all over the place
05:57They couldn't stop anybody and you want to you want to blame him for that as they have a hand in a bad defense
06:02Sure, I'm happy to have that conversation, too
06:04but you know
06:05You're think about how many times you're trailing and teams are running on you and you're still putting up those kind of pass rushing
06:09Totals that's usually reserved to me for like that that Dwight for any role where Dwight do not play the run
06:15We don't care
06:16We're going to have a lead and they're going to be throwing it get after the quarterback and you can just get up field most
06:20Of the time that's usually what you have to do to get to 17 and a half sacks
06:24You can play honest or play straight and play true and get 10 if you're pretty good
06:28But to get to 17 and a half use you have to cheat the process a little bit
06:31You know what? I mean? Like I'm not gonna stay at home on this run
06:33I might bite on this play fake because the next time I'll be upfield and I'll be able to you know
06:37To make the tackle in the backfield, you don't have to play his assignment sound but to be at 17 and a half
06:43Given the fact that they're probably trailing a whole bunch and teams are running. That's even more impressive to me
06:48Trey Hendrickson's gonna want to get paid
06:50This is why he's become available and why the report is that the Bengals are telling him to go get money because they just tagged
06:57T Higgins who they're keeping around at an expensive rate. It's the second tag
07:01So it's 120 percent of what he got last year and they got a sign chase
07:07They can't pay chase long term and tag Higgins with burrow already having broken the bank and also pay Hendrickson
07:15so they're also a little bit of a fun experiment here in my opinion in terms of paying all of their guys on offense and
07:21appeasing their quarterback who says
07:23I'm not choosing between my two favorite receivers
07:26You're keeping both of them because burrow came out and I mean he really took it to the front office publicly in a press conference
07:33and said
07:34Prove it to me, you know, show me how serious you are. I want Higgins and I want chase to stay and
07:40The easy follow-up is so you don't want Trey Hendrickson then right or is that what you're saying?
07:45The defensive end with the 17 and a half sacks, but you can't pay everybody that's where they are this past year
07:53One year 21 million was basically what he signed. So he has an extension. So he's now on the books for
08:01Eighteen point six million this season. I'd have to look into if he was traded with the cap number would be but
08:08No wonder why that guy wants to get paid. He just watched Max Crosby
08:12Get what he might have been an accelerant you would think and he's making less than 19 million with one year left on his
08:17Deal in terms of guaranteed money. He's going hey
08:21Agent. Hello. We need to go get a hundred plus mil and guarantee 55 million of it to me right here and right now
08:28Bangle said no fine, then we'll go somewhere else. You are great Peters great jawline incredible hair. You look awesome on camera
08:34You've already answered questions. You've told every reporter
08:36That's a great question to use their first name every time because you have a high IQ
08:40Somebody in private asks you hey Grant Peters
08:43Come on, man. How far you willing to go to sign Trey Hendrickson? What's the max deal you'd offer best and final? What is it?
08:50contract wise contract wise I
08:53Mean, I would make him one of the highest paid defensive ends in the NFL
08:56Can there be a three in front of it to start?
09:01A AV
09:04Sure, I don't think there would be I don't think I would do that
09:07But I mean if that's what it takes, yeah, go get a great football player. Here's what's interesting
09:11We keep talking about age and like Joey Bose is basically the same age as him and I'm going eyes old
09:15well, he gets hurt all the time Hendrickson's been healthy, but
09:19Because the cap keeps going up and up and up and up and up
09:22Teams are not allowing these free agents to walk to the same extent
09:25So a lot of times when guys shake free it's in this way
09:30It's they're now available for trade because I've paid too many guys and it's not after their first contract at 26 years old anymore
09:38so we will have to recalibrate a little bit of normalcy in terms of like what you expect from the age of a player coming
09:44In here if you're looking for a 26 year old who can get you 14 sacks
09:48That guy's probably not coming available in this era of football. It's probably gonna be a 30 year old or there's gonna be some baggage
09:54I can get you 12 sacks, but I'm coming off an ACL
09:56I can get you 14 sacks, but I can't play the run
09:59I can get you 13 sacks
10:00But I've only played nine games in the last two years
10:03That kind of stuff is gonna be happening more and more and more
10:06I think so because teams are just not letting their own guys walk, especially a premium spots, right?
10:10That's the obviously quarterback, but then you go wide out
10:14offensive tackle
10:15Defensive ender slash pass rusher havoc wreaker and to a degree cornerback, although the cornerback markets pretty decent this year
10:21But this is one of the premium ones
10:22I mean just look at look at how these guys have gotten paid over the years max Crosby just signed the richest non quarterback deal
10:28In sports history sports football history. So you go. I mean, that's that's the new paradigm
10:34So you've got it something exceptional has to happen
10:36And in this case, it looks like it has with Burrow Higgins and chase that you're triumvirate
10:41So they have to figure out a way to build the team
10:43Probably without some of these other high-priced stars that might be on the market here before too long
10:46Here's what I would do I would offer him a four-year extension at twenty six million dollars a year
10:53Hundred four million and I think that would get it done
10:56That's what?
10:58Montez sweat was looking for if you remember
11:01and because he's
11:03Not in his 27 28 seasons, you know, you're 30 you're gonna turn 31 this football season
11:09I think a four-year deal
11:11With that kind of money 104 million and I'd be willing possibly to guarantee him the first three years of the deal or close to
11:17It like instead of just you're like a 75 million in guarantee
11:21Yeah, instead of like 52 million
11:22I'll guarantee you close to 70 like a 65 67 million so that you know, you're gonna probably be here for three years. I
11:31Don't know why that wouldn't get it done
11:32I would go for for at 27 if I had to 28 million my ceilings probably 28 like you say what I do 30
11:40No, probably not. I don't think I would need to but in the 25 to 27 range
11:46I think it's the sweet spot and if the markets really rich because Max Crosby might have just ruined everything for everybody
11:51Huh? You know, okay, maybe 26 28 something like that, but I'd try to avoid
11:5530 million dollars a year, but
11:58You got to take advantage of this quarterback. Who was it that said that to us yesterday? Was it Charles Davis? I
12:04Think it was CD at the end of the show yesterday when we were asking him about wide receivers
12:08Hey, they've got Debo in the fold. Now. Would you keep pushing? Do you think they need another wideout?
12:13He's like, yeah, of course do what you can. You got the quarterback man. Go try to win a title and by the way
12:20We keep asking this old young like what should that we be looking for? Are we okay with it?
12:24They don't seem to really go young and free agency
12:28The monster under the bed here a little bit what's a better reference than that
12:34The
12:35Scary thing nobody talks about I think sometimes with this team. There's not that much really really good young talent
12:43Because of how bad the drafts were this is the point that I'm here, right? Yeah, I'm not going full house of cards here
12:48Okay, but you have built this thing
12:50It's kind of a paper mache build that Jaden Daniels is like holding up with his arms and legs in all directions
12:56and if he is
12:58my homes borough
13:00One of those guys Allen Lamar then nothing matters and you'll just be good every year and no one needs to we don't need we could
13:07Just stop doing the show. Let's talk about the caps of the Nats because they're always gonna be good
13:11but
13:12the young talent when you compare it to the Green Bay's and the Detroit's and the
13:18Minnesota's I'm thinking playoff teams from last year and Philly or whoever it's not the same. No, it's not
13:24So
13:26Do you try to go, you know go solidify that which is a multi-year project?
13:31Or do you just push some chips in a little bit and go we accidentally got here
13:36Let's just keep going this direction until the bottom falls out. Yeah, this is kind of the drum
13:40I've been beaten I would say when some of these more veteran guys come up and I don't want to I don't want to all
13:45The time just go. Oh, he's 33 bring him over
13:48You don't want to just keep doing that because as you said it's a it's a
13:51Hamster wheel kind of a dead-end road for a short-term thing
13:54it's by its nature short-term when you sign someone a one-year deal or a two-year deal or whatever, but
13:59That's point one. But then column two is the window is open. I have so little young talent already in-house
14:06Thanks, right. I've got to fill it somewhere and all the Marty's fairly. Well, I hope you get great gigs
14:12But just stop influencing who's on my roster, please. And thank you who let's look for young stars
14:18Other than Daniels on this football team
14:22I'm just looking at rattling off the starters on the depth chart
14:25McLaurin Samuel Zacchaeus
14:27Coleman Allegretti be oddish Cosme Wiley
14:31Hurts Daniels be Rob. I mean Daniels is the only one on off. Mm-hmm
14:36Young is what sub 27?
14:3926 isn't young but I'd even grant that at this point. That's like going into your second contract age
14:46I'm not putting Cosme on that list after last year coming off an ACL. Are you know like if we're talking studs, he's good
14:53I don't know if he's a stud
14:55Fowler Payne Allen
14:57Armstrong Lou Vu I'll kick Alan off and put Newton in who I like but isn't on that level yet
15:03Louvre's really really good. I would say he's a stud. He's not young
15:08No old Frankie Lou who is 28
15:12I'll take the over on that
15:15What's Frankie's age right? He turns 29 this season, I guess right. I mean, he's
15:20That's not a young stud
15:23Igbenogany Lattimore
15:25Quan Martin is a really good player at safety
15:28Stud I don't think so. Nice player. But yeah, the point stands. So Jaden Daniels is up. How about Sandra still?
15:35There you go. I'll give you Mikey Sandra still as a true
15:39linchpin building block
15:41standout young kid on his first contract
15:44That's two
15:45Are we missing anybody? No
15:48Nobody that you'd go star. I mean they have players that fit that bill, but that's kind of the point here is
15:53You need you need that and let's get that everyone should be in favor of finding that but you only have so many draft selections
16:01There's only so many free agents and your point about guys
16:03You know leaking free at 25 26 and the prime of their careers and being a dramatic talent upgrade
16:08I don't how many of those guys they're gonna be at premium spots
16:10You
