00:00It's like stepping into another world.
00:03This lush oasis of biodiversity in the Moroccan town of Bouknadel is home to more than 500
00:09species, bringing together tropical and subtropical plants from Asia, South America and Africa.
00:15No surprise then that the exotic gardens are one of its main tourist attractions.
00:20Its four and a half hectares are divided into different spaces, representing various ecosystems,
00:25with each plant having specific needs for water, light and temperature.
00:29And some require special care to survive in a climate that's not their own.
00:37Plants generally go through a biological rest period from the late autumn until the end
00:42of winter.
00:43Now, due to the scarcity of water, these plants are depressed and their growth is sometimes
00:49unbalanced.
00:53Created in 1951, the gardens face several challenges as global warming and water scarcity
01:00force those taking care of them to adapt their methods.
01:07Plants generally require a lot of water for their growth, so we use efficient irrigation
01:12methods such as drip or sprinkler systems.
01:15We also closely monitor the plants and practice biological pest control, avoiding chemical
01:20treatments by using insects or animals instead.
01:28Hadani says each year about 100,000 people visit the gardens, which are situated 12 kilometers
01:34from the capital, Rabat.
01:36These include foreigners, schools and researchers coming to study botanical diversity and methods
01:42for preserving rare plants.
