00:00While a picture may be worth a thousand words, a soundscape is worth a thousand pictures.
00:20And we can always frame a shot with a camera so that it looks just right, like you're doing
00:25right now, but you cannot fool the ear that way.
00:44There have been a number of attempts at defining what it is that I do.
00:48One of the older attempts was the idea of acoustic ecology, although I started at that
00:54point where we were recording individual sounds, taking them out of context.
00:59It wasn't something that I was interested in.
01:01I heard the natural world as a symphony of sound, much more holistically, and that's
01:07why I began to record, that's why I've been recording ever since.
01:12In the work that I've done, what I've found after 30 years of recording in the field was
01:18that when I listened back to my library and wanted to go back to many places that I had
01:22previously recorded, they weren't there anymore.
01:25The habitats had changed so radically that they were either altogether silent or just
01:31completely unrecognizable in terms of their soundscape.
01:37I'm losing my favorite things that tie me to the living world.
01:46Everything is beginning to indicate to us, especially through this work that I'm doing,
01:52that our planet is becoming remarkably quiet.
