Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told U.S. President Donald Trump that his new tariffs on Canadian imports were "a very dumb thing to do" – and that Canada would strike back immediately.

Trudeau, speaking hours after Trump launched a trade war against Mexico and Canada, said Canada was imposing immediate 25% tariffs on C$30 billion worth of U.S. imports and if need be, would target another C$125 billion worth in 21 days' time.

Trump's actions are unprecedented and threaten to severely damage relations between the trading partners.

00:00So today, the United States launched a trade war against Canada.
00:05Their closest partner and ally, their closest friend.
00:09Now it's not in my habit to agree with the Wall Street Journal,
00:13but Donald, they point out that even though you're a very smart guy,
00:18this is a very dumb thing to do.
00:22Canada will be implementing 25% tariffs
00:25against $155 billion worth of American goods.
00:31Starting with tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods immediately,
00:36and tariffs on the remaining $125 billion of American products in 21 days' time.
00:43Today, we will also be challenging these illegal actions
00:47by filing dispute resolution claims at the World Trade Organization and through the USMCA.
00:54It's an example of not really being able to see what it is that he wants
00:59because even the excuse that he's giving for these tariffs today of fentanyl
01:05is completely bogus, completely unjustified, completely false.
01:12So we actually have to fold back on the one thing he has said repeatedly,
01:16that what he wants is to see a total collapse of the Canadian economy.
01:22Because that'll make it easier to annex us, is the second half of his thought.
01:26Now first of all, that's never going to happen.
