The United States will acquire Greenland “one way or the other,” President Donald Trump declared in a speech late Tuesday, while emphasizing the island’s right to self-determination.
Speaking before Congress, Trump reiterated that Greenland is vital to U.S. interests and extended an open invitation to its people: “We strongly support your right to determine your own future. And if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America.”
However, he made his intentions clear, stating, “We need Greenland for national security and even international security. And we're working with everybody involved to try and get it … And I think we're going to get it one way or the other.”
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen responded by highlighting Trump’s acknowledgment of Greenland’s right to decide its own future, calling it “the most important part of that speech” and expressing optimism about the Greenlanders' choice.
