Germany and Turkiye accepted as observer countries in ADMM, says Khaled

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin on Wednesday (Feb 26) announced that Germany and Turkiye had been officially accepted as observer countries in the Asean Defence Minister Meeting (ADMM).  He said that both countries will be observers at the annual meeting from 2024 until 2027. 00:00As we are all aware this is a retreat, a retreat where we exchange our views, we bring up matters

00:16that we feel should be put in our meeting, ADMM meeting in November.

00:24So the retreat is for everyone to share their views, and from there it will be taken as a basis

00:33for our discussion in the coming month of November.

00:38And one more thing is that we have agreed, after a few years, a request was made by Germany and Turkey

00:50to become observers in ASEAN, in this ADMM.

01:00So this year, everyone has agreed to accept Germany and Turkey as observers for 2024-2027.

01:15So the acceptance and decision for ASEAN requires consensus.

01:21Last year and before that, the agreements were not accepted by some countries, so it did not succeed.

01:31But we thank everyone and are grateful that under the leadership of ASEAN, it seems everyone agrees.

01:41We have to understand that the demands and wishes of many countries to participate in this observership program

01:53will further enhance the existence of ADMM as an open and inclusive regional security framework.

02:05And the participation of these countries as observers will certainly contribute to their perspectives,

02:16their views, their expertise in defense and security issues that can contribute to the security and stability of the ASEAN region.
