The White House announced it will control which news outlets get access to President Donald Trump, breaking from the century-old practice of independent press pool selection. Traditional media outlets, including the AP, face rotation or exclusion. This decision, alongside the AP’s lawsuit over press access, raises First Amendment concerns. Critics argue it undermines press freedom, while the White House frames it as modernization. A federal judge declined immediate intervention, but legal battles continue as Trump asserts his administration’s authority over media access.

01:00As you all know, for decades, a group of D.C.-based journalists, the White House Correspondents
01:06Association, has long dictated which journalists get to ask questions of the President of the
01:11United States in these most intimate spaces.
01:15Not anymore.
01:17I am proud to announce that we are going to give the power back to the people who read
01:21your papers, who watch your television shows, and who listen to your radio stations.
01:26Moving forward, the White House press pool will be determined by the White House press
01:30team.
01:32Legacy outlets who have participated in the press pool for decades will still be allowed
01:36to join, fear not, but we will also be offering the privilege to well-deserving outlets who
01:42have never been allowed to share in this awesome responsibility.
01:47Just like we added a new media seat in this briefing room, legacy media outlets who have
01:52been here for years will still participate in the pool, but new voices are going to be
01:57welcomed in as well.
01:59As part of these changes, we will continue the rotation amongst the five major television
02:03networks to ensure the President's remarks are heard far and wide around this world.
02:09We will add additional streaming services which reach different audiences than traditional
02:13cable and broadcast.
02:15This is the ever-changing landscape of the media in the United States today.
02:20We will continue to rotate a print pooler who has the great responsibility of quickly
02:24transcribing the President's remarks and disseminating them to the rest of the world.
02:29And we will add outlets to the print pool rotation who have long been denied the privilege
02:34to partake in this experience but are committed to covering this White House beat.
02:39We will continue to rotate a radio pooler and add other radio hosts who have been denied
02:44access, especially local radio hosts who serve as the heartbeat of our country.
02:49And we will add additional outlets and reporters who are well-suited to cover the news of the
02:53day and ask substantive questions of the President of the United States depending on the news
02:59he is making on that given day.
03:19As you all saw yesterday, a federal judge denied the Associated Press' emergency motion
03:34for a temporary restraining order against myself, our Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich,
03:40and our Chief of Staff Susie Wiles for our decision to remove the Associated Press from
03:45the White House press pool for certain and special events.
03:49The judge's ruling upholding our decision to deny the Associated Press such privileged
03:54access reinforces the truth.
03:57And it reiterates what I said from this podium last week when that suit was filed.
04:03Asking the President of the United States questions in limited spaces such as the Oval
04:08Office in Air Force One is a privilege that unfortunately has only been granted to a few.
04:14It is not a legal right for all.
05:20We're going to be now calling those shots.
05:24As you know, we won that lawsuit right there.
05:26See the Gulf of America, which is a beautiful name.
05:28Most people agree.
05:29I don't know.
05:30It's, you know, AP has been terrible.
05:32I think they're radical left.
05:33I think they're third-rate reporters.
05:35Don't miss out.
