The final episode opens during a blizzard when a pride of cave lions appears out of the gloom and heads towards their cave for shelter. Morgan Freeman states that it has been too warm for ice to form for 90% of our planet's history, so the impact of the ice age was huge. It allowed one powerful dynasty to rise and push life to the brink of extinction, as foreshadowed by cave paintings on the walls of the lions' shelter.
