A friend of Jaysley Beck has said sexual abuse in the Army is still going on years after the former Royal Artillery gunner's death. The body of the 19-year-old was found in a locker room at Wiltshire's Larkhill Camp in 2021. She had been subjected to relentless harassment from her line manager, Bombardier Ryan Mason, an inquest was told. Beck had also filed a complaint against Battery Sergeant Major Michael Webber who "pinned her down" and tried to kiss her at a work social. Former soldier Tamzin Hort compared being a woman in the Army to being "a piece of meat in a tank of sharks" and that "people get sexually assaulted left, right and centre, but nothing's done about it". 00:00If she went and reported it, she'd be known as a grass.
00:05It's a man's world and you're like a goldfish
00:12or a piece of meat in a tank of sharks.
00:17That's what I felt like, even just walking to the shop.
00:21People just get sexually assaulted left, right and centre
00:24and nothing's done about it.
00:26Outside in the civilian life,
00:27if someone says no, they mean no.
00:30And that's what it should mean in the army.
00:32I hope something changes, I really do.
00:34Do you think it has, since Jacely died?
00:38After she died, nothing changed.
00:40No one really spoke about anything.
00:42It all just sort of went quiet.
00:45No one come up, no one said anything.
00:48Was the abuse still happening?
00:50Yeah, carried on.
00:51Even the way I got told that she died
00:55was by the lads in the block
00:57and the comments made was she was well fit,
01:00meaning she was physically attractive.
01:03It should have never got to someone
01:08allegedly taking their own life for this to happen.
01:14So it's too late?
01:15It is way too late, 100%.
01:20And do you think it's still going on?
01:22Yeah, 100%.
01:24I will fight until I possibly have nothing left in me,
01:27and that takes a lot,
01:30to get justice for my friend, her family,
01:36and to stop this from happening to any other girl.
