00:00The video game industry is a cutthroat business. It's not meant for the faint of heart.
00:05This ain't your grandma's crocheting class.
00:08Video game industry is brutal and it's oftentimes overlooked how strong
00:15and how noble the CEOs are at the upper echelon of the food chain.
00:20Those are the real heroes.
00:22Firefighters? Second fiddle to video game industry CEOs.
00:26They are beacons of strength that we can all turn and aspire to.
00:31We get to suckle that sweet bosom they provide us with.
00:34And they're able to make the difficult choices that us mere mortals couldn't even fathom.
00:39Because in video games, you're only ever left with two options.
00:43Either one, you release a game that flops, loses a ton of money,
00:49and you're forced to lay off a ton of employees to recoup some of that loss.
00:53Or two, you release an extremely successful game,
00:56smashing sales records, smashing expectations,
01:00and then you're forced to lay off a ton of employees because you can get some more profit.
01:04If you do, you can squeeze a little bit of extra pennies out and make a more strong bottom line.
01:10Again, just like the Sith, the rule of two.
01:12In video games, it's either get laid off because the game wasn't financially successful
01:17or get laid off because the game was financially successful.
01:21Hmm.
01:22Tough choice.
01:23And that's exactly what we just saw from Marvel Rivals today.
01:26Everyone's talking about it.
01:27Of course I'm going to yap about it.
01:29I love the game.
01:31I have been enjoying the shit out of the game.
01:33I've been kind of taking a little break on it.
01:35I've been playing more Path of Exile and Rainbow Six Siege,
01:37but I still do love the game.
01:39And today, I was very excited because they released the gameplay trailers
01:45for The Thing and Human Torch as well as a couple other announcements that were pretty hype.
01:49And both those new characters look amazing.
01:51And then, kind of like giving a dog a pill in peanut butter,
01:54it gave us the goodies and then fed us the medicine because
01:58turns out they laid off the entire North American division of the Marvel Rivals team.
02:03At least that's what the headlines are saying.
02:05It's still, it's not entirely clear everyone that's been laid off,
02:10but bare minimum, we know for sure a game director that worked on Marvel Rivals
02:14as well as some level designers have been released.
02:17There are claims that some of the others were responsible for R&D work,
02:21but again, that's still not entirely confirmed as of right now.
02:24But anyway, let's go through the LinkedIn post here from Thaddeus Sasser.
02:28This is such a weird industry.
02:30My stellar talented team just helped deliver an incredibly successful
02:34new franchise in Marvel Rivals for NetEase Games and were just laid off.
02:38Thaddeus is one of the game directors for Marvel Rivals.
02:42He is not like the sole director.
02:45He's not the preeminent god of Marvel Rivals.
02:47He's not, you know, fucking Stan Lee to this game or anything,
02:49but he was still one of the directors of the game in a division of it,
02:54which is still unclear exactly everything they were responsible for,
02:56but regardless, they did play a role in the development of this game
03:01that is being enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of players every single day.
03:05You know what I mean?
03:06So it's like, it's still a pretty substantial position,
03:08I believe from everything I've seen at least.
03:11And now he and his team have just been fucking slapped,
03:14thrown away like dirty laundry here.
03:16So he seems pretty upset, rightfully so,
03:19because you usually don't expect when your product is so good that you helped build,
03:24you don't really think that you're going to be the one on the chopping block,
03:28because, I mean, logically that doesn't really check out.
03:31That doesn't pass the smell test.
03:33Hey, this thing is doing so well,
03:35we're going to celebrate by spitting in your face.
03:38Get the fuck out.
03:39Leave.
03:39Leave.
03:40Like that's not, that's not something a lot of people expect,
03:43except in the video game industry.
03:45Because in the video game industry, all bets are off.
03:48There's no fucking telling who's going to get, you know, flushed down the shitter.
03:52The only people safe are the CEOs,
03:55like the Ubisoft CEO who is beyond brain dead.
03:59Somehow the dumbest people on the food chain of the video game industry
04:03are the ones that get to keep their jobs,
04:05not the ones that actually build good shit.
04:09It blows my mind, really.
04:11And even if the majority of the people that were let go,
04:13and even if his team was primarily responsible for R&D,
04:18it's still just such a bad look to release them at the height of the game's success.
04:22Also, if they were only there for R&D, why were they permanent hires?
04:27Maybe I'm a little unfamiliar with the way things work at this level of game development,
04:31but typically I feel like if you're just going to have them as temporary workers on your project,
04:37they'd be contract workers, as opposed to full positions, you know what I mean?
04:43But that might just be my naivete in the AAA gaming cesspool.
04:49And that has been a big discussion around this,
04:51like if they're all primarily focused on R&D, well the game's fully out,
04:54so you don't really need that many devs still working around the clock on the title,
04:58because now the game's already out.
05:00You've already built the foundation, now it's mainly about,
05:03you know, developing new characters, or new skins, that kind of thing,
05:08new maps, or even new game modes.
05:10Which, some of them that were let go were level designers,
05:13so you could still use that expertise, they helped design the levels,
05:18you're going to need more levels going forward,
05:20it can't just stay with the same ones that are in the game right now forever.
05:24Who knows though, maybe they were level design support,
05:27and they feel like they don't need the supporters anymore,
05:29so they're going to cut the NA branch off and just do everything in China.
05:35It's still a little too early to tell, but the LinkedIn post continues,
05:38oh well, times are tough all over, let's find these incredible people new jobs,
05:41because we all need to eat right.
05:43And then he name drops someone named Gary McGee,
05:45who is a technical designer currently working on level design,
05:49for Marvel Rifles, assumedly.
05:51And then he mentions,
05:53a lot of our time on the project was spent as a sort of R&D branch,
05:56coming up with new level design mechanics, gameplay mechanics, and so on.
05:59And then mentions Gary was a key part of those efforts.
06:02So, he does directly say a lot of their efforts was spent on R&D,
06:06and then lists gameplay mechanics and levels.
06:10Two things you're going to still need even past the R&D stage,
06:14as you release more characters and more maps.
06:17But I think this is really one of those things where,
06:19they're trying to save on costs, where maybe too many cooks in the kitchen.
06:24We don't need the North American branch of Marvel Rivals,
06:28we'll just do it all in China.
06:30So, then they cut the team loose.
06:33They helped build it, the game is built and it's fucking crushing it.
06:39So now, let's save a little money,
06:42in the height of our success by getting rid of the NA branch.
06:45Another individual let go today is Jack Burrows,
06:48level designer for Marvel Rivals.
06:50Hey folks, well, just got laid off from my job working on Marvel Rivals with NetEase.
06:55Was an enormous pleasure to work with my American co-workers,
06:58who joined me in this sad culling.
07:00Just couldn't dodge that big boot I guess,
07:02no matter how big the success of the gig.
07:04So now I'm seeking a new role and would appreciate your support.
07:06If you hear of any opportunities or just want to catch up,
07:09please send me a message or comment below.
07:11I'd love to reconnect.
07:12Open to work.
07:13Hashtag, you can't win them all.
07:15What's interesting is, they did win it all.
07:18This fucking slammed Overwatch into the dirt.
07:22It took it, gave it a swirly and a wedgie.
07:25This is the top dog in the hero shooter genre,
07:28and they still fucked them in the face for no reason.
07:32To some of the people that were helping with R&D at the very least,
07:36which is a crucial component of making a game in the first place, by the way.
07:39But it seems like the positions were beyond that.
07:42Like, level design is not something you, one and done.
07:45You're always going to need some level designers.
07:46But maybe they already have a ton at NetEase in China.
07:49So they're like, okay, we're getting rid of all this slack over there in America.
07:55But either way, it's just, it's such a bad look.
07:57Now there's a big blemish on the success of Marvel Rivals.
08:00And Overwatch, like they've already announced some big game changers
08:04coming to Overwatch that people are actually looking forward to.
08:08Overwatch can do something incredible here
08:10by just hiring this exact team to work on their game for them.
08:14Not only is that a PR fucking grand salami, people would go ballistic for that.
08:19But this team did prove that they can do good work.
08:24Again, we don't know exactly everything they're responsible for,
08:26but just even being tied to Marvel Rivals at this level
08:29is just a good resume, a good thing to have on your resume.
08:32That's a fucking chunky one.
08:33So it would really be a win-win for Blizzard
08:35as they're desperately trying to get Overwatch back
08:37into the conversation of being like a prominent game.
08:41It'd be good PR win because people would like to see
08:44some talented game developers get back on their feet here in the industry,
08:49like in a genre that they're clearly very good at working in.
08:53And it'd also probably just be good for Overwatch in general
08:55because, I mean, they worked on Marvel Rivals
08:58and right now that's the bigger, better game.
09:01So to me it seems like a no-brainer if you're Blizzard.
09:04Apparently the team's not very big either.
09:06I've seen reports that it was six people,
09:09roughly like around six people that were laid off.
09:12That was the whole NA branch for Marvel Rivals.
09:14So it wouldn't even be like an extremely expensive endeavor
09:17if Blizzard wanted to hire all of them for Overwatch 2.
09:21I think it might be worth it.
09:22I think that'd be kind of a power move.
09:23But anyway, I still find this to just be trash.
09:27I still just do not like this.
09:29The video game industry is in such a bad spot.
09:33You can't even have a successful game without also losing your job apparently.
09:39It just doesn't make sense.
09:41And I know it's not exclusive to the video game industry.
09:43You see this a lot, especially in Hollywood.
09:45Hollywood does this from time to time where something is an extreme smash success
09:49and some of the people that brought it to life get fucking scraps.
09:52They get morsels, less than that sometimes.
09:54So I know it's not exclusive to video games,
09:56but we are seeing it in a big way for this industry.
09:59It is happening all the time.
10:01So not the most positive news coming out here for Marvel Rivals,
10:06which is a real shame.
10:08And I just want to talk about it a bit.
10:09That's it.
10:10See ya.
