High stakes in Bosnia: Dodik's trial could ignite ethnic tensions

If the president of the Republika Srpska entity, Milorad Dodik, is sent to prison by Bosnia's state court, the Serb-majority entity could find itself further distanced from the country's capital.

00:00A court in Bosnia and Herzegovina is hearing closing arguments in a case involving the
00:06president of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik.
00:10Republika Srpska is the Serbian autonomous part of northern and eastern Bosnia.
00:15Dodik is accused of signing two laws in 2023 that suspended all rulings by Bosnia's constitutional
00:21court.
00:22The laws also blocked decisions made by the high representative to the country, the German
00:27diplomat Christian Schmidt.
00:29Prosecutor Nedim Cosic has requested the court to sentence Dodik to up to five years in prison
00:34and introduce a ban on his political activity.
00:38Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said he hoped the court would make wise decisions
00:42that prevent destabilization of the country.
00:45Federal judges are expected to issue a verdict any time between now and the 25th of February.
