00:00It's so funny. It's so full of heart and sadness,
00:03which I am drawn to.
00:07Just to kind of start us off,
00:09I wanted to go to you, Liz,
00:11and just talk a little bit about your concepts for the series.
00:15Obviously, it tackles home
00:16and just kind of like what that really means to people.
00:18So how did you come up with that?
00:20And what do you hope audiences take away from that?
00:24Well, I came up with the concept for this show
00:25during the pandemic,
00:27when we were locked down inside of our homes,
00:30and suddenly these four walls
00:33took on a lot more meaning and importance
00:36than they ever had.
00:39Our homes were really the only place we were safe.
00:41Anytime you had to leave your house, you had to wear a mask.
00:44And I started to think about that even before the pandemic
00:47and after, when you leave your house,
00:50you do put sort of a figurative mask on.
00:52And I thought there's something here.
00:55This is interesting.
00:56Like, you know, at night during the pandemic,
00:59I would surf Zillow just so literally
01:02I could like visit other people's houses and see inside
01:06and just be anywhere other than this place
01:08where we weren't allowed to leave.
01:10And then eventually I started looking for a new house
01:13with my wife and we saw over 50 houses.
01:17And every time we walked into a new door,
01:19you could feel that there was a story there.
01:21Somebody had lived a life, somebody had loved and lost
01:24and kept secrets and had parties.
01:27And I just thought there's a show here.
01:31There's a show in the buying and selling of a house
01:35and the aspirations and the, you know,
01:37the determination that it takes to get what you want.
01:40And I thought it would be interesting to explore
01:42just how far people are willing to go to get their dream.
01:46Yeah, no, I love that.
01:47I feel like you can really tell the backstory
01:49now that I know it.
01:50Like, and after seeing the show,
01:52like it makes perfect sense.
01:53And I feel like you can tell a lot
01:54about a person from their house.
01:56So it's really, it's so fun to see.
01:59And going over to you, Abby, I mean,
02:01I just wanted to ask, obviously it sounds like
02:03she had such an amazing concept of pitch to you,
02:06but like what really drew you into this?
02:09Yeah, I mean, so much.
02:11I've never done a project full of so much mystery
02:15and twists and turns.
02:17And when I first read the script and we first met,
02:20it was just, I mean, I'd been such a fan of Liz
02:23and Debt to Me.
02:24And so that was like my immediate, like,
02:27I would love to do this,
02:28but then I read the script and it was just all the things.
02:32It's so funny.
02:33It's so full of heart and sadness,
02:37which I am drawn to.
02:40But it's full of all the things I look for
02:45when I go to watch something.
02:46And I felt like Leslie was full of all those things too.
02:50As Liz said, she is so determined to get this house
02:53and to find out what happened in there for selfish reasons,
02:59to figure out how she and her wife
03:02can be the ones to own it.
03:03And she's going through a lot in her partnership.
03:07They're trying to build a family
03:08and they've sort of put a stop to doing that
03:11and just navigating, at least when we meet them, they have,
03:15and just navigating what that looks like.
03:17There's just so much there.
03:20And yeah, I could kind of go on and on
03:22about what drew me to it.
03:24But I think even in watching,
03:26not even, in watching the whole show now,
03:29I'm like, it has everything.
03:31I laughed, I cried.
03:33I'm in awe of the cast and the sets.
03:37It just has all this stuff.
03:38Yeah, no, I definitely agree.
03:40I've been talking with everyone
03:41and I'm just like, I love comedy mysteries.
03:43They just really draw you in.
03:45But then this one also has such amazing representation,
03:49which I wanted to ask you, Liz,
03:50just about how you chose what stories you wanted to tell.
03:53There's so many different couples, people that we get to see.
03:56So how was the thought process
03:57of what you wanted to show in that aspect?
04:01Well, I mean, I'm always interested in exploring stories
04:06and sharing stories that feel under-told.
04:09And for me, obviously, as a queer person
04:13who's married and now has a child,
04:16we went through many years of fertility struggles
04:20and IVF and loss.
04:22And it was really important to me to show that story
04:28in the context of just a show about a bunch of people.
04:33And this is a cast, I think, at least from my imagination,
04:38that represents who you might kind of run into
04:41at an open house in Los Angeles.
04:43There's the writer who's struggling
04:46with his follow-up book.
04:48There's the lawyer who's extremely determined
04:52and aspirational, and her wife who's a doctor
04:56and a philharmonic pianist and her contractor husband.
05:05I try to write somewhat from experience,
05:08but also from at least a place of empathy.
05:11So if I can sort of get in there emotionally
05:13and understand where the character's coming from,
05:15I feel like I can write it.
05:17And that's a little bit how I hone in on who I wanna write.
05:22And yeah.
05:24Absolutely, and I love what you said
05:26just about bringing it,
05:28what an LA selling of a house would look like.
05:31Because even the first two seconds,
05:32I was like, we are in LA.
05:33Yeah, I feel it.
05:35We are here.
