These Voyager first contacts were bad, but not USS Equinox bad.

00:06Squarespace.com forward slash Trek culture. What are you waiting for?
00:11Handling something as delicate as first contact really takes a soft touch when you're off in the Delta Quadrant
00:19That only becomes much more important because it's not exactly like you've got an entire fleet standing behind you ready to help
00:26One ship did okay another ship
00:30maybe was
00:32Equinoxed by the first one not my best pun with that in mind
00:37I'm Sean Farrick for Trek culture and here are 10
00:41disastrous USS Voyager first contacts number 10 deuterium hydrogen sulfate and
00:48dichromates first on this list is a bit of a strange case of a first contact really because
00:55Initially the crew of Voyager
00:57Didn't realize they were dealing with sentient life-form when in the episode demon Voyager puts down on the planet in order to do a
01:04few repairs and to
01:07Do this week's version of trying to get rid of Tom and Harry they come into contact
01:11Which what would become known as the silver blood now?
01:15There's a little bit of biomimetic life-forms going on a little bit of happiness here a little bit of decomposition
01:21There everyone has a good time later on however. We come to the episode course oblivion and
01:28frankly
01:29Yeah, this this this gets a bit sad because you see Voyager allowed this silver blood life-form to copy
01:37It's crew and the ship itself, but they then forgot that they weren't the originals
01:42Which meant that when they designed a new type of warp core that let the ship travel faster
01:48They didn't realize it was toxic to their own genetic makeup
01:52Which meant they all basically melted and died all of their logs were lost and they were never spoken of again
02:01fun number nine
02:03You appear to be leaking
02:04the episode night is a great way to open the fifth season of Star Trek Voyager basically because
02:11Well the production team got to just not bother putting in all the stars when they were doing the field surrounding the ship
02:16What becomes a very introverted episode for some of the characters such as Janeway as she effectively locks herself in her quarters?
02:24And feel sorry for herself for a long time
02:27Haven't we all done that?
02:29This week we also get first contact with an alien race that would become known as
02:36The reason we got the Delta flyer. Yeah, okay
02:39They're also known as the Malon the Malon come from a now
02:44Beautiful planet that is as clean as anything and the way that they do that is by dumping all of their waste out into space
02:53Definitely no timely messages going on there
02:56Mmm, well suffice to say that the Voyager crew and the Malon do not become friends Janeway decides to
03:05ponderfully
03:06destroy the first Malon ship that she encounters and that sets up how the
03:11Relationship between these two cultures goes from that point on
03:16Yeah, they're not going to be on the Christmas card list number eight the tale of the deadly stranger
03:21The Vadwar are an interesting case because the way that they were set up in the episode
03:27Dragon's teeth really suggests that we're gonna see them again and again and again in Voyager
03:33And of course we never do so in this case first contact is in fact only contact
03:37but it's quite frightening because
03:40Voyager accidentally discovers this
03:44subspace corridor network that they're thinking
03:48Deadly that's gonna get us home. No bother turns out. It's been
03:53effectively
03:54Co-opted by the Ture but it was originally used by these aliens the Vadwar in
04:00their attempt to conquer the galaxy
04:05Not that much fun then when they are woken up by the crew of Voyager in fact
04:10Seven is the one who's able to pass on this tale of the deadly stranger
04:14Because effectively the Borg have assimilated cultures in the past that tell of these
04:20mysterious demon creatures that just pop up out of nowhere and
04:25Behind a grinning smile reign destruction, and these are the aliens that the Voyager crew
04:32Unwittingly have unleashed again on the Delta Quadrant
04:36And they did fire some fair amount of torpedoes at them before they got away, so
04:41really if they do bump into them again
04:45We don't reckon second contacts gonna go very well number seven more than a mild shock
04:51When you think of the Hirogen now you think of these tall fearsome warriors you think of such actors as Tony Todd
04:59Mark Metcalf these
05:01Seriously, let's not mess with these folks kind of aliens
05:05They are very clearly based around the Predator movies
05:09they keep trophies on the wall and so when you think back to the very first time we see them and
05:14The fact that seven electrocutes one of them through the astrometrics Bay
05:18It's actually quite funny
05:19Voyager has found an old communications relay that they then want to use to connect with the Alpha Quadrant brilliant turns out the Hirogen have
05:27Laid claim to it. They want to stop Voyager using it and seven in what?
05:33Possibly they thought was going to be a momentary bit of comedy sends an electric shock through it
05:38They used the associated relay everyone's happy well that is until the rest of the hunters turn up
05:42Maybe maybe hold off on those impulses for now

06:48Stay safe out there and remember the truth will set you free
06:53number six one spore a cystian two spore a cystian
06:57well the
06:59alien race that voyager first
07:02Encountered was of course the caretaker
07:04Although they didn't realize they were encountering them at the time the caretaker and though we wouldn't discover her for a while later on
07:11Suspiria are members of a spore a cystian life-form called the Nacene
07:16this caretaker has been caring for the Ocampa another first contact race for an age because he
07:24Accidentally made their homeworld barren. He has been looking for compatible member races to
07:32You know
07:34With to create a new caretaker for the Ocampa unfortunately by the time voyager reaches them
07:39They're out of luck the caretaker dies before any of the
07:44Secrets really of the Nacene can be passed over to the voyager crew the caretakers array is destroyed by
07:50Voyager to save the Ocampa from the Kazon
07:53Another point for a first contact there and later on when voyager encounters Suspiria who had in fact just been left in
08:01Voyager as a sort of a
08:03Ace-in-the-hole get voyager home to the Alpha Quadrant if this show wasn't doing very well
08:07card
08:08She doesn't really do much to help them either. So in terms of let's all be friends with the Nacene
08:14Wasn't a good first look number five once more with out chronitons
08:20this is a funny one because we're not sure if this actually counts or not because
08:24Which first contact with the Krennum are we actually gonna look at here?
08:28So you have first contact with the Krennum which was a little scout ship basically firing torpedoes
08:34Attempting to play the Chihuahua to voyagers ball Mastiff that one not very good then off in the distance
08:41You've got Krennum on his time ship erasing the Zol from existence
08:46suddenly this little scout ship Krennum ship becomes a bit more of a beefy
08:51bastard and
08:52It's got something a little bigger in its torpedo tubes and suddenly a voyager is getting crippled and we get this whole year of
09:00Hell, that's a good title for an episode
09:02I wonder if anyone will ever make it then of course by the end of this year
09:07Janeway pilots voyager into the time ship causing an inversion within the ship which resets the clock everyone goes back and
09:15First contact now becomes the bigger
09:19beefier security ship
09:21Piloted by the first guy who then just advises voyager here take the long way around our space as a bit of dispute going on
09:28She says thanks very much. Everyone says good journey
09:31so actually that wasn't that bad, but then when you count Kess in before and
09:37after
09:39Time travel hurts my head number four
09:42Biomolecular warheads first class reunions later
09:45so first contact with species eight four seven two
09:47Effectively put Harry Kim on his deathbed and then the ship was nearly destroyed a lot of Borg were killed
09:55It was a good time. Then we start reaching out to try and understand who species eight four seven two are
10:02The weak shall perish. Okay, cool
10:04Not gonna go for dinner with them then voyager ends up in fluidic space because the Borg brought them there
10:11They fire some modified torpedoes. They get the upper hand the Borg go on their usual rampage through the Delta Quadrant
10:17Whoops, so pretty bad first contact, right? You'd think that might be it. Let's stay away from them forever
10:23Bit odd then when voyager finds a holograph or a hologram ship floating in space and they beam over and they're at Starfleet Academy
10:31What what's this doing here? Let's test these. Oh my good Christ. They're eight four seven two
10:37They were preparing a full invasion of Starfleet
10:41Thankfully, there's a lot more communication going on this time
10:45So you could argue that this is the proper first contact between eight four seven two and voyager
10:51And if that's the case, it shouldn't be on this list
10:55So we're gonna go back to the first first contact which was one
10:59Tripetal alien one swipe of its claw and Harry Kim's face eating itself number three going through a difficult phage
11:07The Vadim's are effectively the vampires of the Delta Quadrant and there's so much tragedy attached to them
11:14However, they're also horrible because of how they try to combat their tragedy
11:19our very first experience of them is Neelix having his lungs stolen because
11:24The lungs in the people that stole them are rotting away
11:28That's how they stay alive by harvesting organs from other aliens in this episode
11:34Which is aptly called the phage
11:37These same Vadim's do in fact save Neelix's life now
11:41While Neelix's own lungs are in now fully integrated into another person who will die if they're removed
11:48Kess
11:49Thankfully the Ocampa are able to effectively live
11:53Perfectly fine with one lung. She can donate one lung to Neelix the Vadim's can make it happen
11:58Okay, sounds like we got a good ending to a bad situation
12:03Janeway does take the time to say listen if we see you again, we're gonna blow you out the sky
12:07I'm paraphrasing but that's effectively the message as time goes on and we encounter more of the Vadim's
12:12Turns out Janeway made the right call
12:14They're not very nice. Dinara Pell is one of the few
12:19Vadim's who shows their
12:21Humanity if you like has not been lost to the phage
12:25So with that and the knowledge that the members of the think tank which Voyager encounters a few years later
12:32Have cured the phage
12:34Time might be right for second contact with the Vadim's now number two
12:39Most storms don't rain nano probes in the finale of the fourth season of Star Trek Voyager
12:46We meet Arturus and he
12:48initially seems to be a friendly alien who can speak all of the languages and understand absolutely everything and
12:55Totally coincidentally Voyager also encounters the USS Dauntless
12:59Which is equipped with a new slipstream drive. Everyone's happy. We'll be home for tea
13:04You never really thought that was gonna happen
13:06Did you turns out Arturus was a member of a species that was directly counting on species
13:148472 to literally destroy the Borg when Voyager made the deal with the Borg that saw species
13:218472 sent back to their own fluidic space the Borg then turned around and
13:27assimilated Arturus's culture
13:29leaving Arturus a little understandably
13:33infuriated
13:34Knowing that he can't take on the entire collective. He effectively settles his rage on Voyager itself
13:40He uses the line that the Borg are like a storm on the horizon
13:43You don't get angry with the storm, but if the Voyager crew were the ones who sort of pushed the storm in their direction
13:50They can be blamed and I could sort of see his point Voyager does survive the day and you know
13:58Dauntless unfortunately ends up in the hands of the Borg who having transwarp ability already
14:03Possibly just don't care about slipstream, but it's quite a sobering thought to think that this final to date
14:11Encounter with Arturus's species. He says a few other survivors got away, but
14:16Was one of pure rage pure blame and quite frankly ends in sadness for Arturus
14:22I'd be a bit concerned really for Voyager if they're nipping back to the Delta Quadrant anytime soon
14:27number one no more scarves on Sicaris
14:31Very early on in Voyager's journey to the Delta Quadrant. They encounter the Sicarians now
14:37initially, these are a hedonistic sort of
14:40You know up their own backsides, but not overtly unpleasant kind of people in
14:46hosting the Voyager crew
14:48They reveal that they have a technology which they call a spatial trajectory which can send people or even
14:55Starships up to
14:5640,000 light-years away at this point Voyager was still 75,000 light-years from Earth that would have made a serious
15:04Serious chunk of their journey gone like that
15:08Unfortunately, the Sicarians were like we kind of have this directive thing where we don't share technology
15:13Although Janeway sort of well, she has to accept this. She does attempt to negotiate
15:19She does attempt to explain their position and alas the Sicarians won't budge
15:24so when
15:26Seska and B'Elanna
15:28Basically hatch a plot to steal some of this technology a plot that Tuvok gets involved in as well
15:35They are then left in a position when it turns out the technology is completely
15:40Incompatible with Voyager they can't exactly ask the Sicarians for help either because they've just stolen from them
15:46So it's all a bit of a disaster really and it gets a little bit more awkward when years later
15:52Seven of nine
15:54Reveals the fact that the Borg have assimilated this spatial trajectory technology, which is
16:00Saved only for the use of the Queen and why it wouldn't be used for a full-scale assimilation of the galaxy
16:06God only knows but yeah, does that mean that the Sicarians?
16:11Didn't have a happy ending. I'm not sure I like this list. Thankfully though. That's the end of it. Thanks very much
16:17What do you think should be on this list?
