Geraint Thomas has announced he will retire from cycling at the end of the season. The 38-year-old is a former Olympic champion and became the first Welshman to win the Tour de France in 2018. Thomas says he would love to help his Ineos Grenadier teammates and “go for a stage myself” at this summer’s Tour. Report by Jonesia. 00:00To be honest, it was quite straightforward.
00:02I think, you know, I kind of joked I didn't want to be that old grumpy guy on the bus
00:06that was sort of over it and past it and just sort of counting down the days until he finished.
00:11I still really enjoy riding my bike, I still enjoy pushing myself and especially racing,
00:16so it just felt like the right time though, you know.
00:20I think, well, I've been doing it for 19 years, so it's a long time to be doing, you know,
00:27any profession, the same thing, but yeah, just like with the family and things as well,
00:32it just felt like the right moment to call it at the end of the season.
00:37I'd love to win a bike race or two, that's for sure, but it's getting tougher and tougher.
00:45I think the Tour de France, you know, I'd love to go back one more time, help the boys
00:50in that and obviously try and go for a stage myself, so I think that would be the big target
00:56for the year.
