Britain’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has got through one of the most controversial pieces of legislation through parliament, the Rwanda Bill, which will not allow “illegal” asylum seekers to enter the UK but be deported to Rwanda for “precessing” instead. They can either settle in Rwanda or another country but they cannot return to the UK.

The UK will end up paying Rwanda about 370 million GBP for this scheme over the next five years.

00:00UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has finally got his pet Rwanda bill through, but this
00:09is a piece of legislation that should actually put his government and the UK to shame.
00:14Essentially, it means that those illegal migrants that are trying to come into the UK actually
00:20can't come into the UK.
00:22They will be sent to Rwanda in Africa for processing, and they may either then choose
00:27to stay in Rwanda or any other third country, but they cannot seek shelter in the United
00:32Kingdom.
00:34This is particularly cruel because when you look at the kind of people who are trying
00:38to actually enter Britain's borders, many of these people are fleeing war zones, they're
00:44fleeing persecution, they're fleeing conflict, and they're willing to put their lives at
00:49risk in order to somehow get a better life in the West.
00:54We've seen many of these small boats that are ferrying these illegal migrants from France
00:59to the UK.
01:01Some of them have sunk.
01:02Many migrants have died in the process.
01:05And that shows you just how desperate they are to turn people like this away and just
01:11push them into Rwanda, which itself has such a terrible human rights record, is particularly
01:15cruel.
01:16Clearly, Mr. Sunak is hoping that by ratcheting up the rhetoric on illegal migration ahead
01:23of the general elections in the UK later this year, he can actually somehow save the
01:28Tories, that's his party, from an overwhelmingly embarrassing defeat.
01:32But it really does bring into question his leadership.
01:36The moral issues are very, very strong here.
01:38But there are also policy issues as well, as experts point out, this is not something
01:43even at a policy level that they feel is the right way to go.
