European leaders will gather in Paris in the coming days to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. The emergency summit comes as the U.S. pursues its own path to peace, with U.S. President Donald Trump set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Saudi Arabia next week.
Transcript
00:00A clear rift between Europe and the U.S. is emerging, with fundamental differences over
00:06global security threatening to soil this once unshakable relationship.
00:12And stuck in the middle of it all, Ukraine.
00:14This war cannot be decided by just a few leaders, not by Trump and Putin, not by me and Putin,
00:23not by anyone here in Munich sitting down with Putin alone.
00:28We must apply pressure together to make real peace.
00:33Before it's even over, European leaders at the Munich Security Conference this weekend
00:38have reportedly agreed to an emergency summit in Paris to discuss strategies for ending
00:43the war in Ukraine.
00:45After it became clear that Europe and the United States have very different ideas on
00:50how to pursue peace, with a U.S.-led approach suggesting ceding Ukrainian land to Russia,
00:56something Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously said he'd consider.
01:01To me there's going to have to be things like territorial concessions as well.
01:06But European leaders say any peace talks need to include all partners in the region.
01:12That we made clear there will not be any peace in Europe if it's not a European peace.
01:18And the U.S.-Europe relationship is at risk of souring further still, with Reuters now
01:23citing several sources saying U.S. President Donald Trump will meet with Russian President
01:29Vladimir Putin in Saudi Arabia for talks this week.
01:33Trump has said Ukraine can also attend, but Zelensky says he's yet to receive an invitation.
01:39And with other European and G7 nations also excluded, it's raising concerns for global
01:45security.
01:47But there was a clear understanding that we need to make sure that Ukrainian voices are
01:52at the table, that Europe and Canada is at the table, because ultimately it is also about
01:59Ukraine security, but it's also about Euro-Atlantic security.
02:02These recent differences in opinion are forcing many nations, including Ukraine, to consider
02:08whether Europe has become too reliant on the U.S. for defense support, with Zelensky now
02:14calling for Europe to unite.
02:16I really, I really believe that time has come.
02:19The armed forces of Europe must be created.
02:27It's set to be a busy week ahead for international relations.
02:31And as Europe and the U.S. each push forward with differing paths to peace, Ukraine may
02:37be forced to decide whose table they'll want to sit at.
