Garnering attention for her multiracial identity as a Black and Indian American, her presence in the Biden administration generated excitement and positive press. Harris appeared to be the ideal complement to President Biden, infusing the leadership team with much-needed diversity.

00:00With less than a year to go for the US presidential election, the Biden campaign is facing a series
00:09of challenges. There is the question of the president's popularity, which isn't so
00:13great right now. Many polls, in fact, even showed Donald Trump going ahead of him if
00:18the election were to be held today. And then there is the issue of his running mate, Vice
00:23President Kamala Harris. Kamala Harris's story is quite interesting. When she first
00:28became vice president, there was a lot of positive buzz around her, a lot of positive
00:31media commentary, because she was the first woman vice president, the first African-American
00:36and the first woman of South Asian descent to hold this position. But it became very
00:42apparent very quickly that she may not have been the best person for the job. There's
00:46been so much criticism of her within the Democratic Party itself that there are reports that the
00:50Biden campaign has asked Democrats not to criticize her publicly because it's hurting
00:56their prospects for 2024. The Republicans, though, are already taking potshots. They've
01:02already been attacking Mr. Biden for his economic record, for his age, which is a huge factor
01:08that's playing on the minds of voters. And they're also telling people that, well, in
01:13case he's not able to finish the job, then you stare at the prospect of Kamala Harris
01:17as president. She's frankly not been able to convince American voters at the moment
01:22that she's ready to take on the top job. Much of this criticism, of course, has to
01:27do with misogyny. It has to do with racism. But at the end of the day, if it is a closely
01:33fought election, all of these are factors that will be important.
