Nitish Kumar's mission to bring opposition parties together in India
Transcript
00:00The first formal steps towards building an opposition alliance for 2024 were taken last
00:09week with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar leading the way. He's met the Congress leadership
00:14as well as Arvind Kejriwal of the AAP and is essentially reaching out to all parties
00:20to bring them together on one platform, particularly those parties that are antagonistic to the
00:24Congress because he's clear that the Congress will have to be front and center of any successful
00:29opposition alliance to take on the BJP. So he's reaching out to Mamta, to Akhilesh, to
00:34Chandrashekhar Rao, even Naveen Patnaik and Jagan Reddy. But many, many hurdles remain.
00:39Firstly, there is an inherent mistrust within the opposition camp of each other. Secondly,
00:45what is Sharad Pawar going to do? That's been the big buzz for the last week or so, that
00:49perhaps with Pawar's blessing, the NCP might actually end up allying with the BJP in Maharashtra.
00:55Now, officially, they've denied it. But Pawar is an old political player. It'll be interesting
01:00to see what actually happens there. The road to opposition unity, therefore, is paved with
01:05many, many challenges.
