00:00Being a mentor is not being a mentor for the younger generation as a coach now.
00:08Teaching them my coaching knowledge, the skills, not only that, you know, even so many aspects like
00:21leadership qualities, teamwork, confidence, mindset, all these things which I went through
00:30for my 20 years, how I learned and just to pass them my knowledge and experience.
00:38This is going to be not one-off, this is going to be right throughout the year,
00:45three times and, you know, whenever I have an opportunity, free time and what Jaffa wants me to,
00:55I'll come and do my part here, you know, just to bring the younger generation to the next level.
01:03Youngsters have, you know, so many different ways of thinking, how they share, then, you know, and
01:12they can learn so much from each everyone and having that, it's easy for the youngsters to
01:23go in the ladder, passing them my experience and everything and give them opportunities
01:32where they can learn and try to be who they want to and, you know, it's huge in Sri Lanka and,
01:40you know, and people looking at you and trying to do the same thing what I did as a young kid.
01:49Those days we didn't have any egos and we didn't try to compare each other, we play as a team,
01:58we play as a team that, you know, really bond together and we enjoy other success,
02:08we help each other, we never complain and, you know, if when someone is doing really well,
02:16we appreciate and those are the things we value as a team game and teamwork. That's why we
02:26won so many games, that's why we were part of one team but nowadays a bit different but,
02:33you know, you need to teach them differences and, you know, not to
02:41being same person most of the time, you know, not to compare with others and, you know,
02:48you have different skills and different knowledge but you need to share all these things and, you
02:55know, and be who you are and, you know, being a cricketer, being a sportsman, you've got to be
03:02humble in this life and that's the way forward and, you know, being honest is most important thing
03:09and learning from others nothing will cost you but you can learn so much from other people as
03:17well and, you know, try to be the best person who you are. It has been there but now
03:25generations are different and playing cricket is different. There are so many T20 games,
03:35one-day cricket and you're playing for the team, you're playing for franchise, you know, and
03:42we have a lot of cricket ongoing and having all these things and playing as a team it's not easy
03:50it's not easy but the person who has everything, you know, he will play longer and he will
03:58being next person to share everything and, you know, try to be, try to come up in the ladder.
04:08Sri Lanka cricket, we need to develop our domestic cricket and our first class cricket
04:17school structure. We need to develop and, you know, we need to teach them that the sports is a
04:26team game and, you know, and try to be play as a one team and, you know, at the end you may have
04:34individual scores but at the end if you win or lose it goes as a team and, you know, you need
04:41to share everything and, you know, those are the things as a team you need to learn and
04:48give others to come up in the ladder and, you know, it's passing our knowledge to someone is
04:54something you can give and learn from them. As a cricketing nation, you know, we need to be
05:00consistent at performance as well, you know, winning one tournament and dropping down it's
05:08not easy, not bearable and, you know, and we need to play competitive cricket. Like I said,
05:14you know, our first class cricket has to be strong and, you know, and even the club structure, even
05:23school cricket has to be strong. Once you have strong domestic competition and school competition
05:31we need to produce good cricketers. When you produce good cricketers it's giving opportunity
05:37for all the youngsters to come up in the ladder and, you know, play and so taking cricket serious
05:43and, you know, perform as a team and you need to have a base for all these things to achieve
05:52as a team. If you take Sri Lanka cricket we have so much talent and we are winning a lot of games
05:59and because of the talent and you need to develop cricketers into a next level like,
06:08you know, motivate them. It can be financial benefit, you know, or taking care of them.
06:17These are the things being Sri Lanka administrators to take care of all the young cricketers but
06:25people like Vanidu Hasaranga has come up really well. He has performed really well. Dasung Chanak
06:32has to come up as a captain and as a batsman he has to develop his batting skill next to another
06:40level and people like Abhishek, Hussain Mendis has been playing really well but everybody has a role
06:49and you have to be committed to it and, you know, you have to be consistent all the time and, you
06:56know, give 100% for the country and for the Sri Lanka cricket as well. It's a good test match
07:03between both parties and both teams, you know, they played up to last ball and, you know,
07:09played good cricket but as a cricketing nation playing five test match in a year is not enough,
07:19you know, you need to play more test matches and, you know, they need to get confident so
07:25they played this test match after five months so you can't expect them to
07:32come really good but they performed really well, especially Angelo, Chandimal,
07:39Kosal, they played really well but everybody had a hunger to play for the final test championship
07:48so they gave 100%. I'm really proud of them and, you know, at least our test cricket has come up in a
07:55different level and I'm sure that they will play well for Sri Lanka cricket.
08:01I look at it in a different way because the amount of cricket these guys are playing right now is
08:07huge, you know, and only few players, cricketers and fast bowlers can play all the formats like
08:17test cricket in one day and T20. If you have a good physics, if you have a good mindset or
08:26your skills or your structure but all of that, you know, being a fast bowler you need to have
08:35discipline and you need to train as well, you know, if you train properly, if you have a desire
08:42I think you can play a long time but you need to take care of yourself, fast bowling is not an easy
08:48job. You need to do everything, you know, you need to do strength conditioning and
08:56running, even skills, when it comes to skills you have to bowl a number of overs more than that,
09:02you know, you can't ask bowlers to bowl five overs and stop, you know, 30 balls but, you know,
09:08you need to bowl more overs and, you know, but most important thing is you taking care of yourself,
09:13you know, I always say that being a fast bowler is you got to sacrifice so many things
09:20and if you can do that, if you train into your limitation, I think you can play a longer
09:28version and it's injuries also, you know, you need to take care of your injuries and, you know,
09:34but especially for a fast bowler you never play 100% fit. I used to bowl one and a half hours,
09:41maybe say maybe 15 overs, 12 overs but when you compare those days and now it's
09:51totally different, you can't ask a younger generation to bowl one and a half hours because you play
09:57a lot of cricket, not only bowling, you know, you've got to do batting, you've got to do fielding,
10:05and your skill level has to be really good at it, you know, if you take most of the teams,
10:14now everybody can field, everybody can bat, everybody can, you know,
10:18specialize bowlers but you need to train everything. If you're bowling at least in a,
10:24say, if you bowl three days in a row or two days in a row, at least one day you have to bowl at
10:30least more than eight to nine overs, like, you know, just to get your muscle tone and you need
10:36to have muscle memory as well and, you know, and you need to learn your skills as well.
