00:00Fortnite, Minecraft, Mortal Kombat, and Call of Duty Black Ops.
00:09These are some of the more popular games out there.
00:12There are literally millions of gamers both online and offline today.
00:16It's a multi-billion dollar industry.
00:20One popular game, Fortnite, has 350 million players today from about 200 million in 2018.
00:27That's more than the entire population of the U.S.
00:31While single player games allow for creative pursuits, online multiplayer games allow for
00:36friendships to be formed on a massive scale.
00:40With gaming, two factors come into play, distraction as well as competition, but it can be hard
00:46to stop playing.
00:48So when does someone's enthusiasm turn into an obsession?
00:52One survey shows that 97% of teenage boys play video games somewhat regularly.
00:57And as with any competitive sport, gaming is only becoming more popular.
01:02In 2019, the WHO stirred up controversy after it officially recognized gaming disorder as
01:08a mental health condition.
01:10There's a thin line between gaming apps and education apps.
01:14Experts explain that simply playing a lot of video games isn't enough to count as a
01:18disorder.
01:19So when does the disorder occur?
01:22When gaming interferes with people's daily lives.
01:25The WHO defines gaming disorder as a pattern of persistent or reoccurring gaming behavior
01:31in which people lose control of their gaming behavior, give priority to gaming over other
01:35interests and activities, and continue gaming despite the negative consequences such as
01:40impairments in their family relationships, social lives, work duties, and other areas.
