00:00Horror movies are no stranger to being embedded full of mystery,
00:04and the following films are no exception to this rule.
00:07However, the difference being with these films is that they
00:10contain mysteries that have not been solved, or are not directly
00:14solved within the movie in which they originate.
00:16Often, a horror movie is just as good as the mystery that surrounds
00:20it, and this creates the suspense and chills that audience
00:23members expect when buying a ticket at the box office.
00:25So, with that in mind then, I'm Ellie with WhatCulture, here
00:29with 8 Horror Movie Mysteries That Will Never Be Solved.
00:328. Why Are All The Men The Same In Men?
00:362022 Alex Garland film Men definitely was met with different
00:41reactions from audiences all over.
00:43Some loved it, some hated it, and some just didn't understand it.
00:46It's clear to see at first glance that all of the men in the
00:50film, other than protagonist Harper's deceased husband, are
00:53played by actor Rory Kinnear, meaning that they are all the same.
00:57We follow Harper, a widow who has recently lost her husband to
01:01what appears to be suicide, and her visit to a countryside
01:04village in order to seek solace for her grief ends up becoming
01:07her worst nightmare.
01:08The film is full of pagan symbolism and iconography, as well as
01:12strong links to the Bible and the creation story.
01:15Neither of these aspects are particularly explained in the
01:18film's 100-minute runtime, but the biggest mystery of the movie
01:21that remains unsolved is that of the men in the village all
01:24being played by the same actor.
01:26This seemed like an interesting premise before the film was
01:29released, however, falls slightly flat as the plot unfolds, as
01:33it seems to have no direct link to anything.
01:35And more importantly, it's not explained.
01:37Number 7.
01:39What Does Jason Know In Us?
01:41Jordan Peele's film Us sparked joy among horror film fans upon
01:45its release, but left many tongues wagging with its final few
01:48moments. This movie centres on protagonist Adelaide and her
01:52family as they vacation in her family's old boathouse.
01:55Not before long, strange things begin to happen to Adelaide,
01:59and her anxiety about an entity that she has feared since
02:02childhood comes to fruition in the form of a family of
02:05doppelgangers standing in their driveway on a dark summer's
02:08night.
02:08It becomes clear that this family's intentions are not kind
02:12or pleasant, and seeing the original family battle against
02:16their identical counterparts is both horrifying and devilishly
02:19entertaining. By the end of the film, the audience are met with
02:22a stark realisation about Adelaide after a flashback shows
02:26the true events of the night she has always feared since
02:28childhood, changing the entire meaning of the film and altering
02:32the way you might perceive the doppelgangers.
02:34Once the family have evaded the murderous clutches of the
02:38tethered, the final moments see Adelaide's son Jason staring
02:42at his mother while they drive off in the car with the rest
02:44of the family.
02:45But we can't help but wonder, what does Jason know? Does he
02:49know his mother's secret?
02:50Is he part of the secret?
02:52You decide.
02:53Number 6.
02:54Where did the creature come from in Bird Box?
02:57Bird Box threw Sandra Bullock headfirst into a Netflix-owned
03:01thriller that ultimately brought her back into the public eye.
03:04Her acting skills were not to be faulted, and the premise of
03:07the film gave her something fresh and fun to work with.
03:10We see Bullock as Mallory, a heavily pregnant woman who is
03:13thrust into a doomsday situation when people begin killing
03:16themselves without reason in the street.
03:18It is soon revealed that the creature responsible for this is
03:21not visible to the human eye, and therefore makes it very
03:25difficult to combat.
03:25As luck would have it, Bullock's character not only gives
03:28birth to a healthy baby boy during the midst of this carnage,
03:31but she also becomes adept at travelling outdoors without
03:34relying on her sight.
03:35One thing that is never disclosed, however, is the origin of
03:39these malevolent creatures.
03:41Although not needing to know this information in order to
03:44understand the plot, it is a mystery that continues to evade
03:47the lore of the film.
03:48Despite it being one of the biggest mysteries surrounding
03:51the movie, we can't help but wonder if not knowing the
03:53creature's origins makes them even more scary.
03:56Number 5.
03:57Are the ghosts real in Crimson Peak?
04:00Crimson Peak is a delightful addition to director Guillermo
04:04del Toro's filmography, and it's not the first time he has
04:07dipped his toes into the horror genre.
04:09The film is bursting at the seams with classic gothic imagery
04:13and cinematography, making it a very visually pleasing experience.
04:17This particular tale follows character Edith and her marriage
04:21to Thomas Sharp of Crimson Peak Estate in England.
04:24From the opening sequence showing Edith as a child, it's evident
04:27that she has some ability to see ghosts in a certain capacity,
04:31except it's not until later on in the film where this becomes
04:34integral to the plot.
04:36Despite the ghosts themselves being important in terms of
04:39Edith's character arc and ultimately where her story ends,
04:42it is never once revealed as to whether or not the ghosts are
04:45real.
04:46Her connection with the spirit realm is heavily inferred, but
04:49as the other characters never display any outward affiliation
04:52with these mysterious entities, it raises the question of the
04:55ghost's legitimacy.
04:56Edith could have developed seeing these spectres as a coping
05:00mechanism after her mother died when she was a child.
05:02However, this is unfortunately something we will never know,
05:06and del Toro will undoubtedly continue to keep close to his
05:09chest.
05:09Number 4.
05:11Who actually is the Bye Bye Man in The Bye Bye Man?
05:14The Bye Bye Man is a 2017 horror that left audiences confused
05:19and disheartened by its severe lack of plot substance.
05:22Not only did it have two-dimensional characters that could
05:25have been replaced with inanimate objects, but it also left
05:28one very large unanswered question.
05:30Who the living hell was the Bye Bye Man?
05:33Before meeting college students John, Elliot, and Sasha as
05:37they move into their new joint home, the audience are provided
05:40with the much-needed foreknowledge of the antagonist's
05:42existence in the opening sequence.
05:44Limited information is given away about the nature of the Bye
05:48Bye Man, other than he is often accompanied by the sounds of
05:50coins falling to the floor.
05:52The nature of what accompanies him, and the fear which he
05:55instills in his victims, is genuinely intriguing, and in a way
05:58sets up a very interesting villain that has the potential for
06:02a great backstory.
06:03Unfortunately, this is not at all delivered upon, and a backstory
06:07is simply not provided in any way, shape, or form.
06:10Nothing about his existence makes any sense, and not even the
06:14people within the film know anything about who he is.
06:173. What Happened to Megan in 10 Cloverfield Lane?
06:2210 Cloverfield Lane is a 2016 horror thriller that has loose
06:26links to 2008 found footage film Cloverfield.
06:30This movie is brilliantly crafted from start to finish, and
06:33fantastically shows the development of each of the characters,
06:36most notably of antagonist Howard and his descent into madness.
06:41The majority of the film takes place inside of an underground
06:44bunker that has been designed by Howard to be used in the event
06:47of an apocalyptic-style situation, whether this be nuclear war,
06:51natural disaster, or an alien invasion.
06:53This movie is full of different mysteries the further in you
06:57get, but the one that sticks out most prominently is the question
07:00of what happened to Howard's daughter, Megan.
07:02He explains to protagonist Michelle that his wife took his
07:06daughter to Chicago many years ago, and that he has not seen
07:09her since.
07:10Various things within the bunker point to Howard having held
07:13someone captive before Michelle and Emmett found themselves
07:15there, and it's inferred that this is not his daughter Megan,
07:19but rather a high school girl that went missing two years
07:22previous. Of course, this does then beg the question, what
07:26really happened to Megan?
07:282. What does The Blair Witch look like in The Blair Witch Project?
07:33The Blair Witch Project paved the way for what is now known
07:36as the found footage subgenre.
07:38Its marketing techniques advertised the film as genuine footage
07:42recovered from the woods where the three actors were claimed
07:44to have disappeared. After the film's release, however, this was
07:48revealed to be a strategic marketing ploy that successfully
07:50increased the interest in the subgenre that seemed to be gaining
07:53traction. One vital element of The Blair Witch Project's found
07:57footage believability is that it only rotates between three
08:00main characters, other than the townspeople that the students
08:03interview early on in the film. In addition to this, the production
08:07quality is evidently very low to try and emulate a documentary
08:11feel, which means that everything is overtly drenched in realism.
08:14However, because of this, a certain level of credibility to the
08:19plot is unfortunately lost, and the visual reveal of the Blair
08:22Witch never actually happens, which means that the audience
08:25never finds out what the entity looks like.
08:281. Why is Jack in the 1921 photo in The Shining?
08:33The Shining, arguably Stanley Kubrick's most famous film,
08:37released in 1980, follows Jack Nicholson's character Jack
08:40Torrance and his wife Wendy, along with their son Danny, as
08:44they relocate to the isolated Overlook Hotel for a new job Jack
08:48is undertaking as a winter caretaker. The film holds several
08:52mysteries that have remained unanswered since its release over
08:5540 years ago, but this does not stop its fans from attaching
08:59multiple theories to them. One such theory that has been attached
09:02to the unsolved mystery of why Jack is in the photo from 1921
09:07is highly influenced by a rare interview with Kubrick, in which
09:11he confirms that several ghosts Nicholson's character encounters
09:14are reincarnations of people who lived and died in the hotel.
09:18This therefore plays into the idea that Jack Torrance is the
09:22reincarnation of a previous individual that was once the
09:25caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, and even at one point Jack is
09:29told that he has always been the caretaker by the butler of the
09:32establishment. Although not being an outright solid explanation
09:36of the mysterious sighting of Jack in that photo, it certainly
09:39would make a lot of sense. Still, the beauty is this is never
09:43confirmed, leaving audiences to settle on an explanation
09:46themselves.
